LADIES NIGHT OUT Normally, the Ladies Night out is held toward the end of each month, but because of the holidays, the November and December events were combined into one on December 6. This evening was spent at the Chart House in Lakeville, which is one of the favorites of the gals. As usual, my wife, who was one of the 14 attendees would not tell me what was discussed at the table. They still insist that cars, and the antics of the drivers of the cars, are not even considered to be newsworthy items. LET S GO FISHING LANDS BIG ONE! At the November club meeting, when the votes were all counted, the local charity, Let s Go Fishing, was awarded $3,000.00. Sue & Keith Biers, who submitted the request, had the pleasure to hand over the check to the folks who run the program. Page 4 CRUZ NEWS DUANE S WORLD Happy New Year to all the Southern Cruzers! Our Christmas was a little whiter than it has been the last couple of years, but a lot more sloppy. I think I have used my snow blower more this year, already, than all of last year. I hope Santa Claus was good to you all this year. I m a little bummed! This is the 50th year in a row that Santa has failed to leave that 1953 Ford Sunliner Convertible I ve been asking him for all this time. When I sit on his lap next year at the Burnsville Center, I think I ll ply him with a little nip of brandy to put him into a giving mood. The last several weeks have been very busy, and I won t have a problem filling these pages with newsworthy items, which includes: a bunch of senior citizen car guys getting a stuck tour bus off of an ice pile!, Toys for Tots, gift wrapping at the Aliveness Project, the club holiday brunch, and a story on the Wednesday breakfast guy s new home. I will have to use the space normally used by the meeting minutes to put in a couple of these articles. At the risk of sounding like a broken record, I hope all of you are receiving the on the new web site. If you are having problems, feel free to contact our new web guy, Tim Hanna. He will have you up and running in no time! And for you members without electronic mail capability, our new Vice President, Jack Keenan, is all geared up to send out your copies by snail mail. Don t forget to let me know if you have a garage project you would like to share. I updated my camera, retiring my trusty Box Brownie. I now have a state of the art Kodak Instamatic which I could use to get some photos of you getting your hands dirty. Happy New Year! ALMOST ANOTHER GILLIGAN S ISLAND BUT NOT QUITE On the old TV show, Gilligan s Island, the passengers were just headed out for a 3 hour cruise, but ended up stranded on a lush tropical island for years. The same thing happened on a snowy, December Saturday night when a tour bus full of Southern Cruzers & Wanderers car club members ventured out to look at the beautiful Christmas light displays around our community. It was just a 4 hour cruise and could have been a lot longer if it hadn t been for a bunch of car guys who have all been stuck in the snow a time or two. We had seen some nice displays, and there were plenty of Christmas cookies passed around to keep us happy. Along the route it had been shown that the bus didn t have the best traction in the world. Trying to negotiate a cul-de-sac, the driver got the bus stuck on a pile of ice hidden under the snow. Putting everyone in the back to put weight on the wheels didn t work, and a crew of senior citizens trying to rock the bus off didn t work. Finally, a neighbor noticed our plight and came out with some cheap plastic shovels, and some salt. After a lot of shoveling, the bus was freed, and we were on our merry way, proving that because we are old and not proficient with the new technology, we do know how to get a bus unstuck! Oh, by the way, I hope the bus company replaced the shovel that was broken! Photos by the Editor
Page 5 SOUTHERN CRUZER CAR CLUB MONTHLY MEETING MINUTES - Taken by Duane Barclay, No meeting in December DICK S SANITATION HOSTS TOYS FOR TOTS The first Saturday in December didn t look very much like a white Christmas, but that didn t stop the festivities at the recycling complex at Dick s Sanitation in Lakeville. Santa Claus was out by the highway waving at folks to come in with toys to give to needy children. Two squared away Marines in their dress blue uniforms were handling the toy area, and there were plenty of snacks and beverages to enjoy. As the photos show, it didn t take long for a group of Southern Cruzers to capture a table and do what we do best, eat and talk! Since Dick wasn t around, Mary Ann Clemer took the opportunity to buddy up with Santa with her Christmas list. I did see a very nice little bicycle standing up by the toy box which will make some little boy or girl very happy. Photos by the editor CHRISTMAS WRAPPING AT THE ALIVENESS PROJECT For several years, members of the Southern Cruzers and Wanderers car clubs have taken a few hours of their time to help wrap Christmas gifts at the Aliveness Project facility in South Minneapolis. This year was no exception. When we got into the wrapping room, the task seemed quite daunting, but due to the organizing skills of Sue Biers, a plan of attack was formulated, and everyone jumped to the task at hand. WELCOME TO OUR NEW MEMBERS Club membership stands at 98, as of November 16, 2016. There were no new members this month. 76 members have renewed, so far, for 2017. WHO DID YOU EXPECT? THESE GUYS? Conversation overheard between two of the wait staff at the club holiday brunch. One asked, Who is that big group of people in the conference room? The other replied, Oh, they are a bunch of hot rodders. To which the other said, All those old people!?
Page 7 SOUTHERN CRUZER HOLIDAY BRUNCH I always look forward to this event! It s something about going through the buffet line numerous times trying to get a sample of everything on the table. This year was at a new venue: Morgan s Farm to Table, located in the Best Western Hotel in Burnsville. We had our own room, and the food was very good. As usual, lucky winners went home with the poinsettias from each table. My side note on page 6 will hopefully, get a chuckle. Photos by the editor WEDNESDAY BREAKFAST CREW HAS A NEW HOME For many years, a bunch of car guys consisting of the Southern Cruzers, Wanderers, Acme Car Company, MSRA, and guys who just love cars with no club, have been gathering at the Burnsville Perkins for breakfast every Wednesday, rain or shine. In the summer, weather permitting, the guys go on a cruise to some interesting spot, often times getting lost along the way. In early December, we discovered that the Burnsville restaurant had closed. As luck would have it, our faithful waitress, Laura, had transferred to the Perkins on I-35 & County Road 50. Laura suggested that we follow her to the new spot, and that we did! The new venue is working well, and I see it as our Wednesday spot for some time to come. In appreciation for her consideration, we passed the hat to have something to give to Laura at Christmas time. On December 21, we gave Laura all that we collected, and a certificate of appreciation from Southern Cruzer President Jerry Forness. If you are retired, or have Wednesdays off, stop by before 8 a.m. to see what we re all about. Bring your sense of humor. With these guys, you will need it! Photos by the editor
