VOLUME 36, NUMBER 11 November 2011 Latest Tailwinds Derek Abramson, Editor souls that managed to make this event a success. About fifteen braved the chilly winds to make this a success. Three members; Tony Accurso, Tony Frackowiak and Doug Killebrew braved the chilly winds for some interesting flying. AVTI.org has been going through a major facelift over the last month. The final plan for AVTI.org is to become a good source of technical information, up to the date information for the field and a place where we could all share photos of this. Members, from rt to lt, Doug Killebrew, Evelyn and Tony Accurso, and Joe Dagata trying to keep warm while waiting for breakfast Where has the time gone, Fall is in the air, the temps are down and the winds are up. Soon enough old man winter will be knocking on the door. This issue of Tailwinds Tails has a lot to be enjoyed. Today s featured writer, Dick Skoglund will take us to Lake Havasu for their annual London Bridge Seaplane Classic. Also, we have numerous pictures of our fellow members and their models. The District 7 Chapionships were held this year in Fresno, A couple of our very own Members attended; Jean Greear won Sportsman, Mike Greear placed 1st in advanced and Tony Frackowiak won Masters. Good job!! On the 5th of November, AVTI s breakfast fun-fly was a go despite the valley s winds and low temps. Doug Killebrew cooked for all of the brave Chuck Mosa showing us how it is done with a T-Rex 700 great hobby. If you have any ideas for our website, please feel free to email or call the webmaster. Mark your calendars, the AVTI Christmas Airshow is back. December 10th is the date, please bring some models out for display and to fly. This will be a great event for AVTI and the Kids Charity of the AV. Bring a new unwrapped toy to donate. Page 1

President s Message VP s Message Hello AVTI members! Hello Everyone I can t believe it s November already and almost the year 2012! It really is amazing when you take a minute to stop and think about where R/C came from and where it is today. The products are simply incredible and technology seems to get exponentially better each year. I am having fun with electric and glow and hope you are too. Speaking of fun, we just had a fun fly at the field along with nice hot pancake and sausage breakfast. After a few challenges with getting power to the hotplates, we were cooking and fed about a dozen or more. The weather was just plain cold and most everyone called it quits after we ate. There were a couple brave pilots that took to the skies before frost bite set in on the thumbs, but overall the wind and cold and turned our fun fly into a short fly. We will get another one on the schedule once it warms a bit as I had a good time cooking and chattering my teeth. Please don t forget the next meeting is our yearly Christmas Party on Thursday December 1st at 6:00. It s being held at Vince s Pasta and Pizza on 30 th west and Avenue L. We have plenty of room and some great gift to raffle so please join us for a night of fun. I also wanted to mention our Toy Drive and Christmas Air Show on December 12 th benefiting The Kids Charity of the Antelope Valley. We will have some great talent coming to fly that day and we need everyone to bring an unwrapped toy for the charity. Please help get the word out to others in the AV. Thanks to everyone for a great year so far and see you at the party.. Doug On October 29 th and 30 th a few of our members competed in the NSRCA District 7 Championships in Fresno. This is the end of the season contest for us Pattern fliers. I m happy to say that Jean Greear won the contest in Sportsman and is the 2011 D7 Sportsman Champion. Way to go Jean! Her hubby. Mike placed 4 th in the Advanced Class in the contest and placed 3 rd for the overall D7 Advanced class. These are both great accomplishments considering how much they can get out to practice. Jean is now going to move to the Intermediate class that is going to be just a bit more work! I was able to win the contest in Masters and also won the overall Masters class Championships. I had a problem come up with my Onas and the Contra Drive unit and I flew my smaller 62 Osiris for most of the contest. That made it a bit more interesting and fun! We had a pretty good Breakfast Fun Fly on the 5th, although it was a bit windy and cool. The grub fixed by Doug was good going down and made up for the somewhat poor weather. We did learn how much power it takes to keep two good size hot plates running! Unfortunately, the Girl Scouts Rocket Whiz day on the 12 th didn t happen. We got out to the field to help get it going, but no Girl Scouts showed up! Seems they cancelled the night before and lost Derek s phone number. Oh well, maybe next time. I m looking forward to the Christmas Party and then the Christmas Air Show. Hope everyone can make it out to both events. If you come to the Air Show, even just to watch, please remember to bring an unwrapped toy to donate to Kid s Charities of the Antelope Valley. Everything donated will be given to kids in our area. Let s help make somebody s Christmas a bit better! Hope to see you at the field! Tony Frackowiak Frackowiak@sbcglobal.net Page 3

Ernie Benjamins with his Kadet It s been a good month for safety. I didn t see anyone having to be rushed to the hospital! My boss asked me to remind everyone about calling out when they taxi out on to the runway. Please check if there is someone flying and then take a look both to the east and west for any landing or taking-off airplanes. Let anyone flying know what you are going to do by calling it out. Then taxi on out and take-off. It just helps everyone out if we know what we re all doing! Could keep someone from going home very unhappy!. Page 5

Model of the Month Above, Pete Carbin with his Sun Racer. Below, Tony Accurso with his F-35 Above, Dick Skoglund with his Hanger 9 Arf. Below, Steve Swick with his Citabria Flat Foamie For Sale CAP 232 Great Planes built from kit Will consider trades for 91 four stroke in very good condition or Full Build Kits 40 sized and up, prefer biplane but will consider all kits. No ARF kits. This model is set up for Magnum 4 stroke 70 and an OS 70 is very similar, nose weight was needed so a larger engine will work fine. The engine mount is adjustable, the kit is built strong and light and covered in Monokote. This not a modern 3-D airplane but is a great aerobatic and sport airplane and looks great in the air. I am willing to install your radio system if needed. Call Cliff at 618-1540 or 946-3106 home or e-mail at cmkeeling@roadrunner.com 135 $ for airframe with tank and hardware. London Bridge Seaplane Classic Dick Skoglund The Desert Hawks R/C Club, in Lake Havasu City, Arizona, hosted their 25th annual float fly on November 4-6 2011. That means 25 times that this club has managed to repeat this event. Not an easy thing to do; especially when workers are volunteers that do it all with 5 to 10 members helping. Did I say club membership is close to 80, this sounds so familiar. This year, 65 flyers turned out from Arizona, California, Texas, Nevada and Washington. Well done Desert Hawks Club. This year the weather front came through and we had cool, windy conditions on Friday and Sunday. Saturday was a perfect day with no wind and clear sunny weather. There were 8 pilot stations in use and most pilots flew in the clockwise flight pattern. For the pilots, a radio impound was required for radios on 72 MHz (20 pilots). A large group of spectators were present on Saturday which kept the food and R/C vendors busy. I guess you wonder what pilots do when it windy or too cold to fly. Not to worry, Lake Havasu is a visitor s town, there is always something happening. The London bridge area has shops and tours going. Also a car and motorcycle cruise in, boat trips to California on the Colorado river, a quilt show, the 7th annual Beer Festival, golf, and a large swap meet. Not tired yet, a short ride to Parker, Arizona, and the Indian casino will take care of loose change. Overall, a very interesting fly-in; there were lot of electric, glow and gas aircraft. Most planes were single engine but several twin engine and one four engine Sig Kadet flew. Most pilots were experienced and few mishaps occurred. Mark your 2012 calendar for the early November London Bridge Seaplane Classic Page 8
