This Summer staff have been around the world, or at least travelled the equivalent distance, some 39,000km. The Summer refresh of hanging baskets is a mammoth exercise involving seven teams over a six week period. Two teams cover the South with the remaining five operating across the North. More than 900 sites were visited to replace and install 12,000 units including baskets, barrels, mangers and window boxes. The teams travelled to hotels, council buildings, shopping centres and commercial offices, with the majority being installed at pubs belonging to Spirit Pub Company. No two sites are the same, with different combinations for each. The exercise involves extensive coordination, from collecting the required plants from Nurture s nursery in the north of England to ensuring the replacement slot is convenient for the client. Nicola Pegg, Purchasing Executive for Spirit, said: Since the contract was put in place 18 months ago, the relationship has gone from strength to strength with key strategies put in place to ensure Spirit Pub Company have market-leading external visuals. Waste Not, Want Not As every gardener knows, collecting and disposing of clippings is a job in itself. It is not a task that concerns Nurture s clients since removing cuttings is all part of the service. We are committed to recycling and reusing material wherever possible so we ensure our clients waste does not go to waste. Nurture is a licensed waste carrier and transports all grass and hedge cuttings, used bedding from baskets and troughs along with Christmas trees to waste pens at our various depots. After rotting down for a few months the material is first shredded and then screened in a rotating drum. The resulting compost is then ready for spreading or re-use across the business, providing valuable nutrients to growing plants. The process is extremely efficient, with around 120m³ of waste producing 100m³ of compost. Larger clients such as Chiswick Park also maintain waste bins to produce compost on site. Investing Reaps Rewards Nurture s presence in Scotland is continuing to expand with the opening of new depots in Aberdeen and Edinburgh and purchase of plant and machinery ahead of the winter gritting season. This investment in resources has followed the award of a major contract on behalf of JLL. Working in partnership with EEG, Nurture is delivering grounds maintenance and winter gritting / snow clearance to 60 sites throughout Scotland. The portfolio comprises retail and business parks, many of which will be open into the evening and at weekends. Nurture will be working seven days a week to maintain a tidy, attractive and safe environment for occupiers and visitors. Helping Hands at the Hospital Corporate social responsibility contributing to the community in which you live or operate is as important for our clients as it is to Nurture. The head office of the National House Building Council (NHBC) is maintained by Nurture. NHBC staff support Milton Keynes hospital which treats around 20,000 elective patients and 200,000 outpatients annually. Nurture joined NHBC personnel on a community day at the hospital to improve the outside space for patients on Ward 15. Volunteers weeded and cleared the courtyard garden and installed new mixed bedding donated by Nurture. The team will be back in November to make the garden ready for winter. Reflecting the Past Nurture has sensitively resited the memorial and poppy seeds will be sown at the new location to provide an enduring memory and legacy of the past. As the nation commemorates the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Nurture has been helping to ensure the military past of a former airfield is not forgotten. Operated by the Fleet Air Arm, HMS (instead of RAF) Ringtail was built during WW2 to train and accommodate naval air squadrons attached to the aircraft carriers based in Liverpool. The base was discontinued in 1957 and the land subject to numerous uses before being considered for redevelopment. In 2004 a memorial to all who served at Ringtail was unveiled and is the focus of a Remembrance Day service each year. Nurture has sensitively resited the memorial and poppy seeds will be sown at the new location to provide an enduring memory and legacy of the past. Nurture helped secure planning permission for retail use by providing a design and build scheme for all hard and soft landscaping. The park is being developed by Bentley Investments Inc and E H Booth who will be opening a supermarket which is designed to resemble a hangar. Other aspects of the park will also reflect the aviation heritage.
Exhibition Builds New Contacts Nurture has enjoyed considerable success during the last few years due to organic growth and acquisition with many new clients secured on the basis of recommendation. Part of the next stage of Nurture s strategic development is to introduce the company to clients in areas where the company is less well known. What better event to showcase the breadth of expertise than the Facilities Show in the Excel Centre in London where Nurture booked a stand for the first time. Simon Blackley, Nurture Sales Director commented: We re immensely proud of the work we do for our clients and the Facilities Show is a great shop window to display our capabilities. Exhibiting at the show is a significant investment but we are confident that the quality of inquiries will lead to new clients across the UK. Considered to be the premier event in the maintenance industry calendar, the show attracts 100,000 visitors and 300 exhibitors. Nurture was delighted to see many current clients and discuss potential opportunities with many new contacts. Passport to Success Passion and commitment are in the DNA of Nurture s staff. The same dedication applied to their work can be found in pursuing sporting ambitions. And some sporting disciplines require excellence not just in one event, but several. When he s not looking after clients in the Midlands, Contracts Manager Martin Jolly can be found in the pool, on a bike, running or coaching others. Martin is training for the Triathlon World Series Grand Final in Chicago based around Monroe Harbor which takes place in mid-september. Martin qualified to represent Great Britain in his age group of 45-49 at sprint distance comprising a 750m open water swim, 20km bike ride and 5km run. I am incredibly proud to qualify to represent my country and grateful for the fantastic support that Nurture has shown to me. Enjoy-Tomorrow at Chiswick Park Sustainability and corporate social responsibility is taken very seriously at Chiswick Park. Businesses and employees on the park contribute to a number of initiatives to make the world a better place, from eliminating waste to landfill to collecting rainwater from the roofs to irrigate plants. Nurture works closely with park management to inspire the next generation of workers by engaging with local schools. Over two days in June more than 130 children came to the park to learn about biodiversity and sustainability and how these concepts are put into action. During the hands-on sessions children reused waste items to create mini-beast hotels for the park s birds and hedgehogs. Banana skins and apple cores from lunch were taken to the 100,000 worms in the wormery to be devoured and turned into compost. The children left a permanent reminder of their visit by planting perennials in the wild flower meadow.
