Wing Ding 38 is over and I d like to thank all of our members who made the long trek over to Billings, MT to enjoy the experience. I m sure everyone who went to Wing Ding has their own special war story to relate. For Joey and me it was trying to locate the Crown Point hotel in downtown Billings which, we were informed after riding around the downtown area for 20 minutes, was no longer in existence having been bought out and rebranded as the Doubletree. Even accessing the main entrance of this hotel was a surreal experience. During the time when our members were not immersed in official activities, we visited nearby points of interest such as the Little Bighorn Battlefield, Pompey s Pillar on the Yellowstone River, and rode the Beartooth Highway. The Billings Gazette did an excellent job of covering Wing Ding. Their stories and some photos are still available on their website. We have included a few of them in this Newsletter. My hope is that at future Wing Dings, our members will take better advantage of the training opportunities that are available. I have personally found that the GWRRA trainers at these events are nothing short of remarkable. You will not only benefit personally by attending but your attendance helps in the Chapter of the Year competition. The Wing World published training schedule did not quite match what was in the official program that we received at registration and therefore could not plan in advance for a seminar that we would have enjoyed attending. And my own personal gripe: there was still no Road Captain Course that I have been wanting for 5 years!!! Wing Ding 39 will be held in Grapevine, TX, between Dallas and Ft. Worth. That is 1600 miles from my doorstep, 3200 miles roundtrip yikes! So there's a year to "think about it" folks. And don't forget: If you think it's a l-o-n-g drive across Montana, you ain't seen nothin' yet till you get to Texas! PAGE 5 The D Man s Block Director Dwayne Bubba Wing Ding is over and everyone made it up and back safely. On the ride up, several of us went through Yellowstone Park and Beartooth Pass. It was a beautiful day up there. No one entered any riding events, but Glen and Joey were at Couple of the Year Boot Camp. There were lots of vendors to check out and that we did. Tom even had a new windshield put on his bike. We saw Bill, Don, and Sharon at Registration having a good time with the people. On Friday, we took a ride out to Little Big Horn Battlefield. Fun and interesting trip but again HOT!!! The high was 98 that day. On the way home we stopped overnight in Jackson Hole, WY. Saturday night in Jackson Hole, what else can you say? We saw the gunfight in the street and several odd items in the store windows. Of course, dinner and ice cream, can t go without that. All in all, it was a very fun and exciting trip and look forward to Wing Ding 2017 in Grapevine, TX. Hope some of us can make it for a good showing. With summer coming to an end, let s not put away our bikes too early yet. We still have some good riding days ahead, even with the cool mornings. I d like to hear some good Wing Ding stories at the next Chapter Gathering. Tim Hursh - Parma Who signed up at Wing Ding! On the road to Wing Ding in Billings. Bikes galore! See you there. PAGE 6 Ride Coordinator Ramblings Glen The McCall Loop Ride that was scheduled for September 17 has been changed. Instead, we will be doing something totally different. The destination will be Silver City but instead of riding there on our magnificent touring machines, we will be driving there on four wheels due to the uneven and steep gravel roads. See, ole Glen is LOOKING OUT FOR YOU! If you haven t been to Silver City before, you can t really consider yourself a true Idahoan. This will be a first for many of the folks in Chapter T and I guarantee it will be a memorable and fun trip. We will first meet for breakfast at 9 AM at the Cracker Barrel in Nampa. Details were sent out earlier this week. Please be sure to RSVP so that we can alert the Cracker Barrel that we are coming. Chapter T s last official ride of the year will tentatively be held on October 15, weather permitting. It is an old favorite ride to Swan Falls dam, transition over to Celebration Park, and then head west along Map Rock Road for lunch at the Orchard House Restaurant. Hope to see you at both of these events/rides. Glen Goff Ride Coordinator Chapter Education & Safety I hope all the chapter members who went to Wing Ding 38 had a great time. I enjoyed myself and had a great ride there and back, even on the 13 miles of gravel road! Yellowstone Park was on fire in several places and bison were walking on the road by us. We still had a safe ride by following speed limit signs, Ranger s instructions, and keeping a safe distance following the traffic in front of us. Even riding in the rain for 40 miles coming back wasn't too bad. Saw a lot of bikes coming back on the road and met a few riders. I rode alone coming back on those long and desolate roads hoping nothing would go wrong with the bike. The Goldwing was great with no problems. Until next month, ride safe. PAGE 7 Membership Enhancement Bill & Nancy Idaho did great at Wing Ding with Riley Anderson, the son of George and Cathy Anderson of Chapter H in Coeur D Alene. Won GWRRA s Got Talent Contest. Wow what an experience for a nice young kid. Tim Mitchell won Top Gun and 2nd place in the Amazing Team Challenge (timed obstacle course). Both of these require a lot of practice and skill, nice riding Tim!! Next year s Wing Ding will be in Grapevine, Texas at the Gaylord Hotel. What a great facility to have it at, we were there in 2004. You don t even have to go outdoors because it is under a big atrium that depicts Texas special attractions. Now that we are all back home we need to be looking at our own chapters and who we want to choose for next year s Couple of the Year, checking your newsletters for the Newsletter of the Year, and competition for Chapter of the Year. There will be an Excel format spread sheet coming out soon that will make scoring much easier. If you have any questions or comments you can contact members of the District Staff. Don & Sharon Weber have stepped up to Region I Directors creating some changes in the District Team. I will be sworn in as the new Idaho District Director at the Region I Team Meeting on October 8. If you are undecided about coming I would encourage you to do so as there are a lot of changes to learn about. I am planning to have a District Team Meeting on Sunday morning to discuss next year s rally (yes rallies are back in) location, and some staff positions that will need to be filled. I will be calling all Chapter Directors in the next week or so to let them know about the details of the agenda we will be going over so they can discuss it at their chapter gatherings for feedback from their members. PAGE 11 Glen & Joey Goff Chapter & District Couple of the Year A Friend is a Friend is a Friend After our return home from Billings, we encountered some unexpected gifts on our front sidewalk under the flowering plum tree. After grousing a bit, we subsequently discovered some new friends: a pair of screech owls! We have added them to our menagerie of friendly wildlife who regularly stop by for a visit: ducks, squirrels, doves, quail, and now the owls. We are so excited to have new friends in unexpected places. What a hoot! Wing Ding 38 was a new experience for us. We met riders from all over: Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, California, Louisiana, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida, and of course TEXAS to name a few! Everyone was friendly and upbeat. We couldn t get over the number of people carrying at least 10 pounds of metal on their vests! It was a good experience, surprisingly a bit frenzied but not chaotic, and very well organized. We encourage everyone to have at least one Wing Ding experience in your GWRRA lifetime! You never know where or when you will make new friends, further enriching your life. ANTE Closing Thoughts Joey We expect to have lots of Wing Ding discussion at the September Chapter Gathering. High points? Disappointments? I m sure we all have a story or two! Thanks to all who sent pictures. With so many varied activities this past month, some pictures will have to wait until next month. And we even have a 50-year class reunion to acknowledge! There are a couple of community support plans for October and November, more details forthcoming. And guess what else is coming right up? YES, it s our Annual Christmas Luncheon on Saturday, December 10 at Louie s in Meridian. Details are being finalized and they will be published in the October Newsletter. It s going to be a FUN party so be sure you don t miss it! See you soon and until next time, safe travels and keep smiling!
