REPORTS.1 Abbotsford City Services Application (App) The Manager, Communications and Marketing, provided an overview and demonstration about the new Abbotsford City Services Application (App). The App is designed to streamline response time to public inquires, improve customer service delivery and increase service efficiency. The City Service App is connected directly to the City of Abbotsford website for access to community information. Moved by A. Levy, seconded by G. Keys, that the verbal report and demonstration from the Manager, Communications and Marketing, regarding the Abbotsford City Services Application, be received for information. PRC 045-2017.2 National Drowning Prevention Week Update The Assistant Manager, Matsqui Recreation Centre, provided a verbal report and PowerPoint presentation summarizing the 2017 National Drowning Prevention Week and 2017 Swim to Survive program. Drownings in British Columbia have seen a downward trend over the last couple of years; however, there were still 37 reported drownings in 2017. The number one reason for a drowning is the improper use or lack of personal flotation devices (PFD). The Swim to Survive program is based on the minimum skills required to survive an unexpected fall into the water. This year s program had 300 applicants with 226 successfully completing the standards. The goals for next year is to provide the Swim to Survive program as part of the School District #34 lesson curriculum; increase family Swim to Survive classes; and implement a new format for the National Drowning Prevention Week. Wednesday, November 15, 2017, at 3:00 p.m., in Room 530, at Abbotsford City Hall Page 3.3 Communities in Bloom Award Status (Report No. PRC 006-2017) The Manager, Horticulture & Turf summarized the information in Report No. PRC 006-2017 and provided a PowerPoint presentation, regarding the Community in Bloom Award Status. The City of Abbotsford in its first year of competition was awarded the 4 Blooms rating with special mention for the International Friendship Garden along with a special award for outstanding effort in this year s special Community in Bloom Canada 150 projects. In 2018, the City of Abbotsford will compete in the National category. The Community in Bloom Committee is actively seeking interested citizens to join its committee. Moved by L. Bell, seconded by D. Collingridge, that Report No. PRC 006-2017, regarding the Community in Bloom Award Status, dated November 03, 2017, from the Manager, Horticulture & Turf, be received for information. PRC 048-2017 7. NEW BUSINESS.1 Highlights from the Parks, Recreation and Culture Final Budget Presentation The Chair shared highlights from the Parks, Recreation and Culture Final Budget presentations, summarizing the Recreation Department 20% increase in programs sales and 28% increase in membership sales. The Abbotsford Centre hosted 40 successful events with an overall reduction in net subsidy for 2018..2 Canadian Elite Basketball League The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) announced its second team naming Fraser Valley Professional Basketball Club (team name to be chosen at a later date) just one week after announcing Guelph, Ontario as its first territory. The Abbotsford Centre, a multi-purpose venue committed to serving as a leading Canadian sports & entertainment facility, is proud to be working with the CEBL s Launch Committee in bringing professional basketball to the Fraser Valley region in British Columbia..3 Planting Trees around the City of Abbotsford The City of Abbotsford Parks team continues to work with Community Developers and the Engineering Department on the best ways to re-forest many areas of the city through the usage of a variety of trees that bring balance and sustainability to the urban canopy.
