Cavalcade of West Australian motorcycles
It s a small (Indian) world In 2009 my wife and I rented a cottage on the Brittany/Loire border in France for 3 months. At the end of the holiday we visited my wife s brother in the German Black Forest area for a week before finishing our holiday in England. I had previously bought some Indian parts of Jüergen Mattern from Stuttgart so I thought it was a good opportunity to visit him and pick up a few parts that I could ship home in our luggage. When I contacted Jüergen he mentioned he would have a stall at the Manhiem Veterama Autojumble and suggested I meet him there. My wife s nephews offered to take me as they had been in previous years. I decided what I really wanted was some 1935 Chief parts and a set of handlebars seemed a good target as I could probably take it home in my luggage. The autojumble was fantastic, probably about 5 hectares of stalls and displays, mainly motorbikes of all nationalities. You should have seen the mighty Munches including a Mammut (all 2000 cc of it). I eventually located Jüergen s stall and he seemed to have every other year s handlebars by not the 1935 type. He waved in the general direction of another stall where he though they had a set and we wandered off to find it. We found lots of other Indian parts but no handlebars. Early this year I purchased a rear Ricardo type trench head to match the front head I had previously bought on E-Bay after deciding I would build a 1935 Chief Y-motor. The seller was a chap by the name of Jože from Slovenia who had completed a 1937 Chief which is shown in the 2011 Xmas Edition of Virtual Indian. He indicated he had some left over parts including original 1935 handlebars he had picked up in Manheim in 2009 but which doesn t suit his 1937 Chief. So now I knew where my handlebars had disappeared. As I said it s a small Indian world. He sent some photos and I ended up buying the handlebars for a good price. He has since invited me to visit and stay with him and he will provide a bike for me to ride whilst I am there. The choice is a 1950 s BMW or his 1937 Chief. Slovenia looks like it is a great destination with castles, medieval buildings, canals and roman ruins which doesn t seem to register on the tourist agenda. I just hope I can take him up on his offer. I recently sold Indian parts to Florian in Austria who also features in Jože s Virtual Indian story so I now have a circle of acquaintances in Europe including Jüergen Mattern, Jürgen Hecker (Hecker101), Môen (Indian Parts Europe), Jože and Florian. The Europeans seem to have the same idea as we Aussies. Restore and ride your Indians.
