News from Chapter J From Tom and Darlene Chapter J Director Well gang, I have to resurrect an old Chapter J saying, YOU GUYS ROCK!!! What awesome month. Let me list a few things that come to mind: I can not begin to thank everyone for the work they did in setting up and running the Burn Camp Challenge. We put on an awesome event that will be back next year. We are waiting on a few checks to come in but we did raise a few hundred bucks for the Burn Camp and covered all of our expenses. Thanks everyone, YOU GUYS ROCK!!! Several of our gals went on a Doe Run and had a blast. I ve heard no complaints from the guys about extreme spending or credit card charges so, YOU GALS ROCK!!! Ticket sales are over, Louie did another outstanding job of coordinating our sales and keeping up with all the tickets. We broke last year s sales by well over 200 tickets and we sold the $10,000.00 winner at our mall show!!! Thanks Louie and everyone who helped sell tickets, YOU GUYS ROCK!! The State Rally was a great time, Jan kept us fed, got us out of jail and we all enjoyed a relaxing weekend at the Midland Fair grounds. Thanks Jan and everyone that helped out, YOU GUYS ROCK!! Don and Ivy did a phenomenal job on our brag book!! If you have not seen it you really need to take the time to look at it. We will have it at our next few monthly meetings and events. Ivy has some real talent and it s clear that she put in several hours work to document our year of fun and frivolity. Thanks Ivy, YOU ROCK!! Those of you who have, or will be driving and/or riding the trams at The Michigan International Speedway, giving a day to the chapter will go a long way to support our events, YOU GUYS ROCK!! Based on the smiles and miles it was a very rewarding month. Darlene and I can t thank you all enough for being part of Chapter J and putting up with us as you re CD s. What next??? The midnight run, Labor Day Campout, Randy Lea s Moonshiners Run, Chapter J Appreciation Dinner, Christmas Party/ Anniversary Party, dinner rides, ice cream rides and a lot of other events to help put some miles on your bike!! We look forward to seeing you all soon. Ride safe and Ride often. Tom & Darlene Taylor Chapter J Directors 5 Change in Chapter Gathering Location After several years of meeting at Holiday Power Sports it s time for us to move our Gathering location. Ed Holiday has provided us a great Gathering place free of charge for several years. I personally appreciate his years of support to Chapter J and respect his decision. Rather than look back at what we had I d like to focus on the benefits of meeting at a new location. The at has graciously offered to let us use their facility for our Gatherings on Sunday afternoons. The Chapter Staff has been meeting there for the past 2 years and we really enjoy the facility. Set up will be easier and more compatible with a good meeting. The ability to serve food and use technology to conduct presentations is greatly enhanced. Our first Gathering at the Church this July 14 th marks yet another chapter in the history of our association and I know, as always, we will all make the best of it. I will be providing more details at the meeting and if you have any questions or would like to discuss in more detail please do not hesitate to let me know. Tom & Darlene. From Gary and Carol Chapter J Rider Educator Chapter J 2013 Couple of the Year From the CoRider's seat... And if you're a Rider who just said to yourself, "Well, I don't have to read this," please reconsider. This is just a few thoughts that came through my mind--yes, it happened on occasion-- while on our wonderful 7,000 mile, 39 day, 23 state trip. (I had to get that in here somewhere!) Many of us have been riding for years, and for some years and years and years! Others may be more relatively new riders. No matter how many years you have in, all of us have our styles of riding and can be pretty set in our ways. Many of you have headsets in your helmets for communication with each other and a CB radio to communicate with others on the road. Back in 1974 when Gary came to pick me up from work and he was riding his motorcycle, a 1973 Yamaha 750, he handed me a helmet and said, "This is how you're getting home!" I had never ridden, but my love for it began that day. We had no headsets in the helmets, and our communication consisted of basically yelling back and forth (Continued on page 6)
to be heard. The same for the years with our 1977 Yamaha 750, but it never hindered our riding. Then there came a stretch of 25 years that I did not ride for various reasons, (not important for now). When we took the plunge and bought the 1800 in 2007, I thought I was in heaven. The difference between the Yamaha and the Goldwing was amazing from my seat! We had new, better helmets, too, but still no headsets. So at that point, we were still basically yelling back and forth. Then I decided one day on a long trip when I had had to call out several times that I needed to move or shift so as not to startle him, that there had to be a better way. We decided that I would move my hand across his back as a signal that I wanted to move, then wait for his nod, then I'd move as needed. We soon decided on several non verbal signals that we both use to communicate many different things including danger alerts, and have been using them for the past 6 years. (All the while dreaming of getting headsets!) You may be thinking as a CoRider and Rider that this is not relevant because you have headsets to communicate. Please think again! Just before our trip, we finally got headsets. I can't tell you how excited I was for this. Almost immediately after leaving on our trip, my mike quit working! I could hear Gary and music, but he could not hear me. Now you guys might be thinking, "What's the problem?!" But even Gary will tell you that the ride was not as enjoyable for him because of this lack of communication. With the newer style helmets, we couldn't really even yell back and forth and be heard clearly. So for 5500 miles, we were back to our old hand signals for some things, but we couldn't enjoy conversation. (The mike was replaced at Wing Ding, only to quit working after only 500 miles) This is not a boohoo, poor me for not having a working headset article. From a Rider Educator's wife's perspective, I hope that if you do not already have hand signals designed between Rider and CoRider simply because you have headsets, please take some time and figure some out that work for you. Don't make them complicated. You know the old saying of K.I.S.S. right? You never know when that mike or headset receiver may quit working on you. Too many things need to be communicated between the two of you for safety's sake. CoRiders need to be alert to your surroundings and be able to communicate any dangers to the Rider. (And if you want to figure out any other things to communicate, well, that's up to the two of you! :-) From the CoRider's seat, thanks and Ride Safe! Carol and Gary Williams Chapter J Rider Educators Social Time Gathering Chp J Gathering 5:30 pm-6:00 pm 6:00 pm-7:30 pm From Rich and Cheryl Chapter J Assist Directors By the time you read this the Michigan Rally will be over and I am sure it will be as fun as it has ever been. Unfortunately this year we will only be there for urday s events because of issues with my dad, who is quite sick lately, and of course my place is here with him. The rally is always fun so I hope you attended. Chapter J s annual corn roast is this month at Terry and Jeff s house. It is planned for the 25 th and the final details have yet to be announced but that s always good fun. The Labor Day camp out is the end of the month too and I believe there are 11 sites taken and more still available, so get your reservations in soon. Unfortunately my challenge for the tubing will have to wait because I sold the boat. I hated to see it go but someone wanted it more than I did. They have a big family so it went to a good home, so to speak. I guess by me renovating I gave it a new lease on life rather than a trip to the bone yard so that s a good thing. The Midnight Ride is just around the corner, August 16 and 17 and the hotel is set up so we are already to go. It is always a lot of fun for all especially the gals because of the shopping in Mackinaw City. As for me I just like to take it easy and maybe go to the casino a couple of times. This trip is always great fun and we never miss it if possible. There are a ton of things to do this year, dinner rides, Ice Cream rides, camping, and much, much more so get going because summer is half over and before you know it riding season will be over and the snow will be here, burrrr! Rich and Cheryl Fetterman Chapter J Assistant Directors Midnight Ride Friday urday August 16-17, 2013 Cheryl has reserved rooms at a Hotel in Macinaw City. Contact her at 517-812-4845 for information on how to reserve your room. Be sure to save this weekend and get your reservations in. This is a great weekend to enjoy and relax. And you really don t want to miss seeing my turtle. New Chapter Gathering Location 6

Everyone July was here and gone in a flash, that seems to be the way all these month s go. There is so much to do and so little time to do everything. You just have to pick and choose what you think you would enjoy and have fun at. August is just a busy as ever. Starting with the Michigan State Rally, then you have a week to rest before the Midnight Ride, and the Race at MIS. Hopefully you have reserved your room for this weekend. It is one of the most fun event I have ever been to. I try not to miss it if possible. Last year I didn t get to go because of my 50th Class Reunion. So I made sure that I didn t plan anything on the same weekend this year, although I will be going to a Quilt Show on the 14th and 15th, but will definitely be leaving with you know who, Rich, and Cheryl on Friday. Also going on this same weekend is the MIS Race in Brooklyn, which some of you will be working. Thank you all for taking the time to spend your day helping out Chapter J Then another week or two to catch our breath, and any thing else we need to catch up on at home so we can enjoy the Labor Day Camp Out. It sounds like there will be a lot of members camping out on that weekend. You can also visit them if you can t camp out. Everyone is invited to join in the fun. Some of the events coming up In September are the Region D Rally, Moonshiner s ride to Chapter H Ontario 18th Annual Campout, October brings the DJR2 Free Fun Run. Folks are now able to begin making reservations for Labor Day Camping 2013. Charlie & I reserved the same site as last year, #75 for Thursday through Monday. I know Jim and Kathy have #77. There are still sites in the immediate vicinity as well as others in the park. People should check the campground map to be sure they are as close (or far away) from the group as they want to be since the sites are not completely sequential. It is on the Chapter website thanks to THE DON and sent to the newsletter. It is also on the Goldwing J facebook. Labor Day is Monday, Sept 2, 2013. Most people will be camping Friday night, August 30 through Sunday night, Sept 1. We will be camping at Portage Lake State Park, but this is part of the Waterloo Recreation area off Seymour Rd, North of I-94 near Grass Lake. With State parks you are able to make reservations up to 6 months in advance of your arrival date, and for cabins it is 1 year in advance of your arrival date. State parks do not have a minimum number of nights even during holiday weekends. Cost is usually less than $25 per site, per night depending on your camping unit. There is also an $8 reservation fee.
