DIV 6 MEETINGS Our Division 6 meetings are on the THIRD Friday of each month and our next Division 6 meeting will be on FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2010. The meeting will be held at the Civic Center Senior Center in Livonia, at 5 Mile and Farmington Roads. The meeting is from 7:30pm until 10pm. OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF DIVISION SIX OF THE NORTH CENTRAL REGION OF THE NATIONAL MODEL RAILROAD ASSOCIATION ON THE RAILS FEBRUARY 2010 Hello again! Now that the holidays are over, it s time to get back to work on your layouts and models. After all... we do have a convention in 9 months! Local trains show are still in their prime with several good shows upcoming. Hope you find your bargains. And, don t forget about our local hobby shops, please support them as much as possible! Actually, with the holidays over, my modeling time has reduced as I m back at work instead of being off. The Reading Lines did get a fair amount of progress done over the holidays! That was fun! Now, here s the rest of your Div 6 news- MEMBERSHIP NEWS We had no new members at the last meeting but we did have a very good crowd!! I d guess we had close to 75 members present! Cool! John Bussard, from Div 5 was a welcomed guest! And it was good to see Graham Brown, who's been absent for awhile. To all Div 6 members, WELCOME ABOARD! PRODUCT REVIEW We did not have any product reviews this month. If you have an item to review, see Glenn before the meeting starts. MODELING INFORMATION We had some extra time at the end of the last meeting, so tips, suggestions and questions were asked and answered, including- Member Mark Ellis showed us how he used Poplar wood, 2 long x 2 square, for sanding blocks and as square supports for gluing models together. Also made own sanding block board from hard board with a trim piece for sanding against. Member Larry Williams told us about using round toothpicks for road guard poles, drill hole for wire for cable, use black marker to put black top on white poles used in 30 s to 60 s! It was mentioned that Michaels Craft Stores have decent craft paints, Americana brand on sale for 77 cents, plus in store rebate coupon for $5 off when you buy 10 bottles. Don t know how long that sale is on. It is possible to thin this paint with windex or water for air-brushing. Was mentioned that there was a coupon in recent Val-Pack mailer for Nankin Hobby for $5 off when purchasing $20+ Cool! NYC line side structure colors- Glenn Joppich was asking, please contact him if you know. Member Gary Mead is looking for a PVC pipe 8 dia about 12 long. If you have an extra piece this size, please call him- 734-721-4329 Sent via mail - member Neil Allen says that "Pat's Village Miniatures" while catering to the doll house hobby, has some items that could be used by model rr'ers! Store is on Outer Dr. in Dearborn. 313-359-0400 We look forward to more questions, tips next month!

RAILROAD HISTORY Norm read from a Assoc. of American RRs Feb 2009 paper on railroad land grants. It was mentioned at Fall Convention, that short lines were booming and taking BACK land that has been designated rails to trails and Railroad land grants. A land grand is issued by the federal government for many reasons, given to lots of people to help get the USA going!! 1850-71 was big years for railroad land grants, which stopped when the transcontinental railroad was completed. However, railroads continued to "pay" for the grants by giving the government reduced fares. This continued to the end of WW2 in 1946. Some say the railroads need to continue to pay for their land grants, but several studies have shown that railroads have more than double paid back their land grant worth. Still some "people" believe railroads should be paying for land appreciation, even though the railroads own the land. Not fair!! THANKS for the info Norm! Looking forward to another lesson next month. LAYOUT TOURS A big THANKS to Norm Logan and Mike Tranquella for their tours last month! Great layouts that are good to see again and again! We do have Layout tours in February, but they are on different days and areas. On Saturday, Feb 13 h Div 6 member Tom Harris and the Henry Ford Village model RR club will be open from 10am-2pm. Then on Sunday, Feb 28 th, Jim Zinser will be open from 1pm- 4pm. Both layouts are HO scale and are in various stages of construction. Both are very worth seeing!! See the map and special instructions, later in this newsletter. Thinking of hosting a layout tour? Give Dick a call or email to have your layout on tour! Dear Members of Div 6- I wish to express my sincere appreciation for the assistance given by members of Div 6 to the Southern Michigan S Gaugers. Without your help in the set-up and tear-down of the S gauge layout at the Fall Show, I would not have been able to accomplish all that needed to be done in the hour given. Sincerely, James Hockenberger and SMSG members You are welcome!!

DIV 6 MISC NEWS It was reported that a website page on Trains.com as rules of taking railroad photos without being hassled by police! And what to do if confronted. A Certificate of Appreciation was given to Doug Meyer for his contributions to the Division! Congratulations to a great Div 6 member and supporter! As mentioned in the Clinic article, we were without a projector for our slide/picture show. It was suggested that Div 6 purchase a projector. Ed Beamish will be researched for cost and quality. Asst. Super Bill will be keeper of projector if we do purchase one, since he is also the bldg key keeper. It was also suggested that we get and use a PA system, as many members are hard of hearing and many members are soft spoken. We will look into using the building PA system and cordless mics at future meetings. DIVISION 6 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Superintendent- Glenn Joppich 734-464-6004 steambigot@yahoo.com Asst. CLINIC This months clinic was an old-time movie. The movie was a 1946 Bill Miller movie on GTW trains through Michigan. We saw stations at Romeo, Washington, Armada and Richmond. The movie showed a daily run through these cities/towns. Thanks Dave Jakubiec for the show! We were going to do pictures again, but no one with a computer projector was at the meeting. Sorry guys! We ll maybe try this again in a few months. If you are willing to do a clinic, please, e-mail or call or see Howard at the meetings and share your thoughts. We have 10 official registrations so far - don't forget to register and feel free to use the on-line registration! We'll be checking with the mall again, to see about layouts in the mall and if they can waive the fee they originally wanted. Dick is ready for you to sign-up your layout to be on Tour for the convention. Please see him at a Div 6 meeting for the forms. Please see Howard to sign-up to do a clinic, if you have one you can do! Flyers will be mailed to all NCR members in the next month or two! That will get registrations in! The Planning Team has received official NCX polo shirts and they look great! NO, these were NOT free - each member has paid for their shirt!! The Planning Team is having a meeting and we'll report more at the Feb Div 6 meeting! WHO WE ARE We are Division 6 of the North Central Region (NCR) of the National Model Railroad Association (NMRA). Our Region, the North Central Region (NCR), is all of Michigan and the northern part of Ohio and Indiana. Each Region is then divided into DIVISIONS, which are one or more counties.
