These are open meetings, meaning any member is welcome to attend. Ideas are always welcome. Contact the President or Secretary for the location. Membership dues are $20 per year Any member renewing their membership prior to the annual show, send your payment directly to the treasurer Ken Stein. If you are renewing your membership at the annual show in August, go to the show office to pay dues. Ken will then notify both the secretary & newsletter editor so they may keep their records up to date. Membership forms will be updated to reflect this change. If dues are not paid by October 1st, member will no longer be considered a member as per the by-laws. New members joining after January will have their membership fees extended to the 2nd show (i.e.: pay on/or after January 2018, membership expires August 2019). This does not apply to members who let their membership lapse and then renew after January. Any member 65+ years of age may pay $150 one-time for a lifetime paid membership. 60+ $200 for lifetime membership (Non-refundable). Monthly Meetings March through August the monthly meetings will be held on the first Sunday of the month at various locations. Watch the newsletter for the locations. July 1, 2018 General Membership Meeting Crystal Lake Recreation Area, Ayr, NE 27 members and guests enjoyed a potluck lunch at 1 p.m. at Crystal Lake Recreation Area near Ayr, NE after a word of prayer by Donna Wilton. President John Howsden called the business meeting to order at 2:10 p.m. Dave Babcock moved the minutes of the June meeting be accepted as printed. Rod Brooks seconded. Motion carried. Money turned in: Sue Uhrich turned in $15 for barrel train renewal from the Wood River Senior Center and $100 from Shelton Cornerstone Bank. Donna turned in $300 from Tom Dinsdale of Hastings and $25 from Rutts Heating and Air. Bills turned in were KRVN radio ad for All Ne Tractor Ride of $306.00 and Platte River Radio (KHAS) for the show of $199; newsletter printing and labels $44.50, Printing for All NE Tractor Ride $19.90, Printing for the show $13.89, printing, envelope, labels for All NE Tractor Ride $234.01 for a total of $312.41 to Eakes; Postage for All NE tractor Ride $22.40, 3 Point Tires for tire repair and new tube for farm expense $25.78, Show flyer address correction of $10.03 and $1.77, fuel to haul 15 loads fertilizer to the farm (farm expense) $31.38, postage for All NE Tractor Ride $151.63 and tote for PVAMA Tractor Drive $5.47 for a total due to Donna Wilton of $248.83. Jack Flanigan moved the bills be paid and Dave Babcock seconded. Motion carried. Donna Wilton mentioned Nelson Trambly left 2 8 foot tables for the kitchen and she moved he be paid $15 each for a total of $30. Roger Hanousek seconded. Motion carried. Regarding show donations Sue Uhrich asked Toners in Grand Island and was told that their donation was sent in each year and that Titan (part of Toners) in Hastings always donate a pedal tractor. She asked Donna if this was so. No, the only year a pedal tractor was donated was the last time we featured Allis Chalmers 5-6 years ago. Pull back tractor for the show was discussed. Donna said that Titan Machinery will not donate one since we are not featuring Case IH and she hasn t talked to LandMark about a John Deere. It was mentioned there was an Agrico dealer in Central City. She asked who was going to talk to him and be responsible for getting it to the show and returned. Dave Babcock mentioned the tractor used needs a quick attached hitch. Howard Uhrich July Meeting Minutes mentioned he knew some farmers with larger tractors he will ask Bill Grounds and Bart Robinson. Club will pay for fuel and give them a couple meal tickets. Howard will report back at the August meeting. Donna had a number of items to discuss: Caps do we want any/ what color? How many? With our logo for 35 years? Discussion. Dave Babcock wants the AC and MM logo on them. Marlin Bates moved we purchase 12 yellow with MM logo and 12 orange with AC logo on them. John Carllson seconded. Motion carried. She mentioned the club could do a full size show flyer ad in the Hastings Tribune (11x 17 in full color for $658 or in black and white for $555. Discussion. Will it be printed in the Encore? Will it be online? Will be online for subscribers? How many subscribers? Tabled until August general meeting. Donna will get answers. Super raffle regarding the AC train they haven t made a caboose yet so we will give away only 3 pieces (engine, and 2 cars) plus the track and power pack. She asked at members take flyers and tri folds to put out (hardly anyone took any). They will be at the Aug mtg again. She also had Steiner catalogs for anyone to take. New Business: Elmer Spurrier, co-farm manager, mentioned the wheat is bound for the show and Jim Buschow and friend got the rest cut. There was approximately 114 bushels taken to the elevator. Hayrack are under roof. Didn t get any baling done due to tractor malfunction. Thanks for all the help. Roger Hanousek asked how the old MM tractor raffle was going only about $70 raised. He will put it on an old Donahue trailer so it can be moved out north after show. Winner needs to transfer it to their own trailer. Donna asked about Appreciation Supper. Agreed to have it at Glenvil Legion if available at 5:30p.m. on Sunday Nov 4th. Donna will send out invitations to sponsors and volunteers this year. She asked who will be in charge and who will do the cooking or is it to be catered. General consensus was to have it catered. Members are to get catering charges and menu for approximately 80 people and bring back to the membership at the August meeting. She mentioned there will be an RSVP so whomever is chosen will have an idea of how many to prepare for. Last year had 70-80 in attendance. Lake dredging will NOT be done by show time and we will NOT be able to use any area by the lake for parking trailers and pickups as well as visitors vehicles. Discussion.. Might have to park trailers in town. John Carllson will ask Ayr Ag about parking trailers on their property. Parking on the west side of the road for either tractors or vehicles discussed. Not tractors narrowed up the road too much. Will use that area for handicap parking as it needs to be enlarged anyway. Will be able to park up north by the RR tracks to put trailers. John reminded everyone in that area to ask nicely if they would be willing to park there. Some member campers can go there as well. Will mix tractors and equipment together this year. Will put Jim Buschow s 42 AC pieces in the front row. Saturday July 14 will be the Adams County Fair parade. Those participating meet at the field at 8 a.m. and will move to 1st and Colorado by 9 so Ken Stein and give out parade numbers. Jim Buschow s Blue Hill tractor drive will be that afternoon (the 14th) at 1 p.m., unload west of the sale barn. The temp of the weather will determine the distance of the drive. Blacksmith building is on skids and will be squared up yet. Mark Scofield, a club member, and an employee of CHS of Alma was responsible for obtaining 5 gallons of exterior latex satin white paint for the building. Sue Uhrich moved we give Mark a 3 year membership. Dave Babcock seconded, Motion carried. Trim color was discussed. Dave had originally donated an overhead door, but that will not be used as when it is up it will prohibit handing of line track and pulleys. A 5 or 6 foot sliding track door will be installed instead. Dennis Nelson mentioned that since the club is losing their show coordinator and no one has stepped forward, that maybe CCC could help. He talked to the hotel management instructor in Hastings and she was all excited about the opportunity to have students do this and it would look good on their resume. He will take her the packet Donna put together and visit with her some more this next week. There would be no cost to the club and they would put in a minimum of 60 hours. John Carllson moved Dennis pursue this opportunity, Ken Stein seconded and motion carried. Donna s thought it that there will still have to be one person for the club in charge (show coordinator position, for example) to make sure that everything is being done in a timely manner. Every year new students would be working on this. Dennis mentioned the Phelps County Fair and tractors are wanted. Chuck Goff mentioned a short tractor drive on Sunday July 15 at Prosser in memory of Paul Short. Will start at 1:30 p.m. beginning and ending at Prosser Village Hall, rain or shine. Community picnic afterwards with everyone bringing a covered dish to share. (5 p.m. ish). Provided will be sloppy joes and hot dogs, beverage and table service. There being no other business, Dave Babcock moved and Jack Flanigan seconded the meeting be adjourned. Brad Harpham objected (lol). Motion carried. A. Good night, Allis, Deere. What kind of tractor do you always hire and never own? A. A contractor! Have you ever wondered how Allis-Chalmers tractors got their distinctive shade of orange? It s not because orange was the only color left! (Although to be fair, a desire to be different might have had something to do with their color selection). The very first AC tractors were a dull shade of green. Everything changed in 1929, when Harry Meritt took a trip to California. Merritt was the manager of Allis s budding tractor department. He must have been thinking over the question of color one day when he traveled past a field of brilliant, blooming poppies. As they waved in the breeze, the color struck a chord with Merrit. He went back to the factory and convinced his colleagues that orange was the right choice. The shade was named Persian Orange after the poppies (a native crop of ancient Persia, now modern-day Iran). If you are painting an AC tractor, you should know that the company used two different shades of Persian Orange (Persian Orange #1 and Persian Orange #2). If getting the shade exactly right is important to you, then you ll want to do careful research to determine which color to use. Specified Items that have to be done so the show can open Before the show, During the Show and After the show 2018 Once again we are asking members to volunteer to help with the following items listed so just a few won t have to have to do everything: Before the show: Homemade Pies: each family is asked to bring 2 homemade fruit pies/crème pies & may be brought as early as Friday or earlier if arrangements are made. If you cannot bring pies Mow/weed trim: final mowing will be done the Sunday before the show, if it needs it from the Aug meeting. Bring mowers and weed trimmers to make short work of this task. Equipment: Tuesday evening move club equipment to show grounds Picnic tables: Wednesday evening 6p.m. or earlier; place in designated areas (see picnic table placement sheet) Ken Stein gets permission from fairgrounds to use picnic tables. Bathrooms: Thursday or Friday morning: put port-a-potties in location. Will need someone to check them & re-fill toilet paper if needed, on Sat. evening. (Office has extra) Trash Cans: Put out either Thurs. or Friday; Put majority in PVAMA concession trailer area, others at other food vendor s areas. (trash containers will have been brought to park earlier.) Tarps, Chairs, Tables, Tents: Thurs evening 6 p.m.: put up various tarps and tents, and Tractor Pull bleachers; chairs in music area, tent at entrance gates. (see Tent placement sheet) Tables 1 table and 4 chairs for pull track bookkeepers; 3 or 4 tables under tent for Super Raffle items and items to sell, 1 table, 4 or 6 chairs at admission gate. Flags/signs: May start as early as Wed rope off various areas and place signage in park. They are stored in storage building. Kitchen: clean and organize; have wastewater container in place. Talk to Sue U about Helping in either the kitchen or ice cream room. (see Board Member list) Gate Attendants: Sign up to work a 3-4 hour shift (or more) on Saturday and Sunday. (behind office under the trees) Raffles: Need 2 people both days, all day long may change out for shifts. Parades: 1 person at beginning of parade start route to line up parade; 1 person to radio parade number to announcer, 1 helper for the announcer. Tractor Pull: Need 2 bookkeepers; currently they are Cindy Bohlen and Donna Maul Kitchen: Sue Uhrich is in charge of the kitchen. Please talk to her about helping. We continue to thank her family for helping in this area. Runner: need someone to run cold water to gate attendants and field demo workers and others as needed. Admission Gate: need club members to help at the gate in 4-hour shifts. Need to be there at 7 a.m. both days. (see admission gate time sheet) Please attend August 5th club meeting for more information. After the Show: Trash Containers: pick up, empty, rinse (if needed) and store; pick up trash that missed the containers Tables, Chairs, Tents: take down and store in storage building (only tables and chairs). Tents go back to owners Children s pedal pull track/equipment: tear down & put away in storage building Flags/Signage: take down and store neatly in storage building. To start the parade Ken Stein drove the Grand Marshall in his 1918 Oldsmobile Touring Car. It was formed by the union of three agricultural companies which were: - Moline Plow Company, est. 1852 - Minneapolis Threshing Company, est. 1887 - Minneapolis Steel & Threshing Company, est. 1902 The new Minneapolis Moline Co. was now equipped to survive current economical hardships as a full line supplier with an impressive list of tillage tools, cornshellers, threshing machines and reliable tractors for small farms to heavy road construction. Starting in 1910, Minneapolis Steel & Machinery Co., produced a heavyweight line of road builders and prairie sod breakers known as Twin City tractors. By 1920 Twin City offered tractors as small as 12-20 and as large as 60-90, a fourteen ton six cylinder. After the 1929 merger, Minneapolis-Moline was very successful with the Twin City 17-28, 21-32, KT, MT and 27-44. Minneapolis-Moline would evolve several Twin City tractors into their own models and continue designing innovative new models for the next thirty years. Minneapolis-Moline acquired the Avery farm equipment line in 1951 and Minneapolis-Moline s modern tractor line was so well executed that many of these machines are still working all sizes of farms, all over the world. Minneapolis-Moline was purchased the White Motor Company in 1972 and the last use of the proud MM badge was in 1974.
