It was started by the Paine Field Chapter of Washington Pilot Association as a way to spread the member's enjoyment of aviation and to educate the public on general aviation. Throughout the years the aircraft displays, food vendors, merchandise, and flying have grown to create a wonderful festive event for the whole family. That's right - we've seen all the signs of spring and now the biggest indicator - Paine Field Aviation Day - is less than a month from now. We're excited about this year's event - it's larger than ever, spanning both east and west sides of the Airport. It is easily accessible from either side using our frequent shuttles. Our kids activities are being coordinated by an elementary education professional, and it's a wonderful collection of the playful, educational and the inspiring. We've added several car club displays and of particular note are several pairings of aircraft and auto of similar vintage. For example, how about a 1958 pink Cadillac next to a 1958 pink Beechcraft Bonanza? Planning is entering the final stages, layouts are almost complete; vendors and exhibitors are booked and being finalized. We'll have the best sound system ever, and so we've arranged this year for professional airshow announcers. We have solved the parking issues of the past by using satellite parking and shuttle buses that bring our guests right to the entrance for the event. No more long walks or driving around looking for open parking spots. Our food vendors this year bring quality choices at affordable prices. family to spend an affordable day together, enjoying a beautiful spring day with plenty to satisfy the aviation voyeur, as well as many choices of non-aviation activities for every member of the family! Admission this year is $10 for adults and kids 17 and younger are free. That price gets you access to the ramp and to both Flying Heritage Collection (FHC) and (HFF). Come see the treasures in FHC's new Hangar 2 and see all that HFF has to offer this year, including the HFF Beer Garden. Many of the more unique andinteresting GA aircraft from around Paine will be on showcase on the ramp as well. Young Eagles (free introductory flights, kids 8-17) will be flying throughout the day and there will be a variety of aircraft overhead at various times from late morning to the end of the day. Come see some of the inspiring warbirds that Paine is so fortunate to host. Start early at 8:00 am with the Firefighters Fly Day 5K Run and reenergize at the Pancake Breakfast. The gates to the ramp open at 9:00, then spend the day, 'cause it'll take you all day and you still may not see everything! Mark your calendars. May 18th, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. animal. Paine Field Firefighter Alan Waller and his wife, Melissa, welcomed baby Landon on February 18, 2013 at 10:18 pm. He weighed in at 7 lbs. 15 oz. and was 21 inches tall. Earth Day at Narbeck Boeing's Supersonic Transport mockup arrives at Paine Field. The front section of a full-scale mock-up of Boeing's gigantic supersonic transport was delivered to the Museum's Restoration Center at Paine Field on Friday, April 12. Boeing built a full-scale, wing and fuselage proof-of-concept mock-up of the proposed airliner in the late 1960s. In 1966 the Boeing SST proposal was chosen by the U.S. government to be the country's first supersonic airliner, then in competition with the European Concorde and the Soviet Union's Tu-144 SST programs. The Boeing proposal was a huge airplane that would be faster and carry twice as many passengers as the Concorde. The Boeing project was cancelled in 1971; the prototype unfinished. The Museum's artifact is the 85-foot nose section of the 318- foot fuselage mock-up. The artifact will be stored at the Museum's Restoration Center until it can be permanently exhibited at a later date. Spring is here and various bird species are actively feeding in open areas all around Paine Field. One particular wildlife hazard that pilots and tenants should be aware of this time of year is Gulls. When heavy rain occurs in the spring, the infield grass becomes saturated, forcing earth

worms to the surface and onto paved areas. Flocks of gulls are regularly attracted to this easy food source. Not only do gulls present a hazard by continually flying around the AOA looking for worms, but they also frequently eat so much that they will sit or "loaf" on runways or taxiways while they're food is being digested. Facts about Gulls: Chief Bohnet has Brett Blankenship swear an oath during his promotional ceremony to Fire Captain. Brett Blankenship was promoted to the position of Captain in the Fire Department on February 27, 2013. Blankenship has been with the department as a firefighter since April of 2001. Captain Blankenship has progressively worked on his education to become an Officer throughout his career, completing Fire Officer 1 & 2 training, Fire Service Instructor, Incident Safety Officer, EMT CBT instructor, senior evaluator for firefighter certification and many other fire associated certifications that will give him the tools he needs to be a leader in the fire department. The position of captain plays a critical role as the incident commander at all emergencies and is responsible for the development of personnel assigned to his shift. Please welcome Captain Blankenship to his new role in the fire department. TankFest Northwest at Flying Heritage Collection There are about 50 species of gulls in the world of which about 18 are regularly found in North America. North American gulls vary in size from 1/4 lb (little gull) to over 4 lbs (male great blackbacked gull). Gulls are the most frequently reported birds struck by civil aircraft in the USA. 25% of all identified bird strikes involve gulls. The sexes are identical in plumage but males are generally slightly larger than females. Gulls are generally long-lived with annual survival rates of 70 to >90%. A number of banded herring gulls have been recovered after 20 years and the record is over 30 years. Male and female gulls form pairs during the nesting season and both sexes contribute about equally to nest building, incubation, and feeding of chicks. Clutch size is usually 3 eggs. Gulls attain adult body size within 6 to 8 weeks of hatching but do not obtain adult plumage and mature sexually until 2 years (for small gulls) to 4-5 years (for large gulls). Species identification and age classification of immature gulls can be difficult. Gulls struck by aircraft should be identified to species when possible. Because of large variations in behavior, migration, and body size among gull species, correct species ID is critical for determining management actions at airports

and for analysis of engine and airframe damage. The Future of Flight Aviation Center welcomed a new aircraft exhibit on March 11. The aircraft is a modified HK36 Super Dimona Boeing Fuel Cell Demonstrator, which is a modified two seat motor glider made by Diamond Aircraft of Austria and is on loan indefinitely from the Museum of Flight in Seattle. Paul G. Allen's Flying Heritage Collection (FHC) welcomed visitors to the official opening of "Hangar 2" on April 12, 2013 - a 26,000-square-foot expansion to the FHC facility that features new exhibits, a movie theater, and new planes and ground weaponry. Thanks to the expansion, FHC will be able to put more of its rare warbirds on display for visitors to enjoy, and dive deeper into the history and technology of the incredible WWII artifacts. In 2008, Boeing successfully demonstrated the first straight-level manned flight that was powered solely by a hydrogen fuel cell system. The modifications to this glider included a proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell/lithium-ion battery hybrid system. During takeoff and climb, the aircraft drew from the combined power of the lithiumion batteries and the fuel cell. The fuel cell then provided all power for the cruise phase of flight at 60mph (96.56 km/h) for 20 minutes. The Boeing Fuel Cell Demonstrator was modified and tested by Boeing Research and Technology Europe (BR&TE) in Madrid, Spain. BR&TE worked with companies in Austria, France, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States to design and assemble the experimental airplane. A fuel cell is an electrochemical device that converts hydrogen directly into electricity and heat with none of the products of combustion such as carbon dioxide. Other than heat, water is its only exhaust. With zero carbon dioxide emissions, very low noise levels and an insignificant infrared signature, PEM fuel cell technology has potential for use in

powering small manned and unmanned air vehicles for surveillance missions. Airplane Wash Racks The three wash racks at Paine field are there for tenants to wash aircraft only. Remember to refrain from washing cars, equipment or non aircraft related items at the racks. Keep a keen eye when traveling around the wash racks as people on foot working on planes may be so focused on making their planes spick and span that they may not be aware of approaching traffic. Please clean up after yourself at all these locations as well. There's the ever-present potential for FOD with runaway towels, rags and items from an open plane interior so be vigilant while using the wash racks. The Future of Flight Aviation Center, located at 8415 Paine Field Blvd, Mukilteo, WA, 98275, is a unique learning and interpretive facility designed to let visitors experience the marvel of commercial jet aviation and production. It celebrates the historic accomplishments of the last 50 years since the first flight of the Boeing 707 and highlights the technological possibilities for powered, winged flight during the next 50 years. If you're working on your aircraft at one of the wash racks be careful to keep an eye out for aircraft taxiing to and from hangars and tie-downs as pilots get busy and may not be aware of operations at the wash racks. Please be extra diligent about the use of the wash racks to keep them a useable and safe asset to the Airport of Choice! Non Towered Airport Communications It is important to use clear and concise communication on the Paine Field CTAF of 132.95 when the tower is closed. Pay close attention to possible ground vehicles presence on the airfield as well as aircraft both on the ground and in the air. It is the duty of all operating on the airport to communicate location and intention as to movement on and around the Airport. Remember as a tenant to be extra careful when driving at night and after tower operating hours to avoid other ground vehicles and aircraft using the roads and other areas on and around the Airport. Pilots should always announce their intentions and position throughout any and all operations especially when entering a taxiway or runway.

Annual Fly Day 5K Run/Walk and Pancake Breakfast The Paine Field Fire Department is hosting the 5th Annual Fly Day 5k Run/Walk this year in conjuction with Paine Field Aviation Day on May 18. The run will start at the Future of Flight at 8 am. All participants will get a t-shirt and a pancake breakfast coupon. There will be prizes for the top male and female finishers. Proceeds will go to to the Muscular Dystrophy Association. To pre-register go to the Fly Day 5K website. Paine Field Firefighters will follow up the run with a pancake benefit breakfast at 9:00 am at the Paine Field Fire Department. The cost is $5 and will go toward a local charity.
