Mt Cotterell Trip Report July 2 Wo Man No Man This was a Women only trip. Hopef ully the f irst of a regular thing f or this section. initial climb on tussock gave way to scree and then snow at about 1600m. We ascended an old slide f or a bit then headed lef t. It was a straight f orward climb to the top f rom there. The skies were clear and we enjoyed great views. The f orecast was f antastic. There were f our of us in the f inal cut, out of the original six. The plan was to park at Six Mile road and walk or bike the 5 km to the start of the Hamilton River. Af ter much debating the bikes were not taken and it was going to be a walk. We f igured since us girls talk so much we wouldn?t even notice the drudgery of the road. The Hamilton River was soon in sight and af ter a snack it was of f on a well f ormed track rising up then back down to the river. The track ends at river f lats and then it is a game of how long can you keep the f eet dry as you head up to the head of the valley. Af ter a section of dry creek bed, where Bett saw a mystery man with a pack (never seen again, I reckon it was a deer) we gained the tussock and scree at the head. Af ter some searching we elected to camp at 1300m in the bush edge to the east. There was reasonable space f or three tents and an old campf ire told us we were not the f irst to camp there. Sunday morning came around quickly. Af ter a lazy alpine start (Margot missed her alarm f or the second time in one weekend) it was of f up the east route. The Back at camp by early lunch had us heading out the same way on a beautif ul af ternoon, getting back to the car at around 5pm. The road had lost some of it?s earlier charm but it only took just over an hour. Participants: Margot Harkness, Bett Koch, Megan Southwick and Liz Roberts.
BSCC Fol l ow-up Trip t o Mt Tapuae-o-Uenuku. 23/ 24/ 25 Sept Jerome Waldron Deciding the weather would be suitable and after a bit of yes no, back and forward I finally gathered a small group keen to make the trek up the Hodder. Sadly, only one participant from the BSCC was able to participate, a shame as this is a perfect opportunity to get some quality mileage on a big mountain. The walk up the Hodder was pleasant enough. Alan commented that he never gets sick of the landscape of this area. In fact, I felt the travel was better this trip as there had been an obvious recent large fresh down the river effecting a good clean out. We arrived at the hut just as a thick damp fog engulfed us and visibility dropped to ten metres, good timing. A 4am alarm kicked us into action and once organised off we set off at 5am relieved to be leaving the hut under a calm star studded sky. With such a small group to manage, Alan was free to team up with Liam and go for Mt Alarm, the only main Kaikoura peak missing from Alan?s CV. We parted company at the upper waterfall in Staircase Creek. Jim, Frank and I headed for Tappy. Snow conditions were excellent with both teams making steady progress pushing the pace a bit for fear of an early arrival of some predicted frontal stuff. Both teams summited shortly after 10 am in fine calm conditions. Great views all around, particularly of the Nankervis line on the south east ridge of Mitre (? hmm?think I might lead a trip there next year). Alan?s right, this is a super area. Anyway enough day dreaming, back to the hut for a late lunch. Within an hour of returning the weather clagged in with light rain and snow higher up, again good timing. A fine but overcast morning and a pleasant walk down steam, (Jim sighting a hind grazing in an open area), saw us back to the car by midday just as the weather packed up to rain. More good timing. Thanks for the great company of Alan Liam Frank and Jim.
