UPPER PENINSULA NET NEWS SERVING THE WESTERN GREAT LAKES HAM OF THE YEAR W8WR LARRY ALMAN GREENVILLE MI HAM OF THE MONTH KC8ZMN CHRIS HANSEN UNIONVILLE MI AUGUST 2015 FROM THE EDITOR-----------------------------------------BILL, N8NJA bkn8nja@att.net The month of August, time to get in that vacation, start the back to school shopping, and enjoy hot weather and humidity if you are that kind of person, not me!! Since the last newsletter we have lost a couple people who were part of the U.P. Net family. On July 20 th we lost Dr. Jim Robb, N8GWN of Gaylord. I had known Jim long before either one of us was a Ham, more than 40 years. We first got to know each other because we both loved the sport of bear hunting with hounds. Even though Jim spent more time in the kitchen than running behind the dogs he sure liked to go. He always had called me Billy, a name I never really liked even as a kid, but it was ok for Jim to call me that, he was that kind of a friend. He was my Saturday pre-net control for many years and always got me a great list to work from. Jim, Doug and I took some great trips to the U.P. Hamfest together and always had a great time. Jim really loved our net and the people on it. I will miss him every time I tune the radio to 3.921. Earlier this month, Larry, W8WR our Ham of the Year lost his wife Roberta. She had been fighting COPD for a long time. Larry is such a great guy and always does so much for others it just does not seem fair for him to suffer such a lost. I know all our hearts and good thoughts go out to Larry. On a brighter note, had a great time at the U.P. Hamfest in Escanaba. Great to see everyone and enjoy their company. The DCARS group sure does a great job. The Hamfest gets better every year. Thanks to Walt, K8WLT for making our dinner arrangements and Doug, WB8VOF for the pictures..
