GENERAL 50 Afton Bridgend is a former manse situated in the village of New Cumnock in East Ayrshire, 6 miles southeast of Cumnock, and 20 miles east of Ayr. The main road crosses the Afton Water here, then takes a sharp kink to the north through the centre of the village, beyond which it crosses the River Nith. It was once a mining village, the collieries that once existed here were closed in the 1970 s and replaced by open cast mines. The village is home to some very attractive buildings and boasts a school, town hall, parish church, railway station, bar and mineworkers memorial. Tamar Manoukian outdoor swimming pool was refurbished in June 2017 by the Dumfries House Trust. The area benefits from excellent transport links with the train station at New Cumnock a short walk away. Bus links are close by providing access to Ayr, Kilmarnock and Glasgow City. A new super school campus is planned for Knockroon (between Cumnock and Auchinleck) and work is beginning this year. Cumnock offers a variety of local shops, restaurants and sporting facilities.
