Year of Resistance Introduction The theme chosen for the Airborne International Youth Conference Youcee 2018 is Resistance. This is in cue with the other Airborne partners, which have adopted resistance as the Year theme for Platform WO2 (WWII). The annual conference is structured on the template of the Arnhem Model United Nations (ARMUN), a Rivers International School student project. Students from the Netherlands, Poland, Germany, UK and Italy, participating in the Market Garden programme organised from Tuesday to Sunday, join the conference on Friday. On the days between the students take part in a varied programme focussing on the meaning of peace and freedom then and now, from the perspective of Operation Market Garden. The objective is to promote awareness among the new student arrivals from the Netherlands and abroad of the inestimable value of the Four Freedoms, formulated by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. By virtue of their participation in the Market Garden programme, the youngsters are the Key to the Airborne region. (1)

Programme Year of Resistance Day 1 Tuesday, 18 September 2018 Dresscode: casual Registration and introductions From approx. 16.00 arrival Polish, German and Italian students and teachers. Transfer to Hotel Panendal. Planning: 17:00 Check-in Hotel Papendal. After Registration & introduction diner at the Hotel (2)

Programme Year of Resistance Day 2 Wednesday 19 September 2018 Dresscode: casual Arnhem s Airborne past revisited On day 2, we revisit the region s Airborne past. The group visits the Airborne Museum in Oosterbeek and attends an Airborne Battlefield Tour. It is expected that the group, as part of their battle Field Tour, will visit the most widely known Airborne monuments. At the Airborne cemetery in Oosterbeek the youngsters will place a bouquet of flowers. Planning: 08.00 Pick up Rivers Students at Rivers International School 08.30 Pick up Polish, German and Italian students and teachers at Hotel Papendal 09:00 Opening at the old church of Oosterbeek and start of the Battlefields day 10:00 Visit the Airborne Museum 12:30 Reception and lunch by the Mayor of the municipality of Renkum 14:00 Battlefield Tour 17.00 Bus leaving for Hotel Papendal and Rivers International School (3)

Programme Year of Resistance Day 3 Thursday 20 September 2018 Dresscode: casual Preparations for ARMUN Preparations for the Arnhem Model United Nations conference will take place in the Town Hall of Ede. The youngsters receive guidance from students of Rivers International School. A leisure programme is scheduled after lunch. Programme Year of Resistance Day 4 Friday 21 September 2018 Dresscode: formal Day 4 ARMUN Resisting Injustice The Arnhem Model United Nations conference is an initiative of Rivers International School with an additional group of 125 youngsters. The conference takes place in the Provincial Government House Arnhem. ARMUN is a high-power conference which will see youngsters debating the challenges facing the world today. In the evening the group will attend the Airborne Memorial in Arnhem s Airborne Square where several young people place a wreath. Planning: 07.30 Bus leaving at Hotel Papendal 07.50 Bus leaving at the Rivers International School 08:30 Reception by the King s Commissioner in the Province of Gelderland, Mr C.G.A. Programme Year of Resistance Day 5 Saturday, 22 September 2018 Dresscode: formal Day 5 The Battle of Arnhem The Battle of Arnhem broke out after the dropping of the First Airborne Division in the Ginkelse Heide in Ede. Each year, a parachute dropping is organised at the Ginkelse Heide in honour of those killed in action. The event will be followed by a commemoration attended by the group and a bouquet of flowers will be placed at the monument. After the dropping and on-site commemoration, a memorial service is held at the Poland monument in Driel in attendance of the youngsters and a wreath of flowers will be laid. Planning: 09.15 Bus leaving at the Rivers International School (including extra students from local schools) 09.50 Bus leaving at Hotel Papendal 10:30 Attendance of Ginkelse Heide parachuting event and commemoration at monument 13:30 Bus leaving for Driel 14:30 Commemoration service at Poland monument in Driel 16:30 Bus leaving for Rivers International School and Hotel Papendal (6)

Programme Year of Resistance Day 6 Sunday, 23 September 2018 Dresscode: formal Commemoration and Closure The YOUCEE conference ends with the attendance of a memorial service at the Airborne cemetery in Oosterbeek. In the afternoon the group will depart on their journey home.
