REGISTRATION How to Register 1. Mail completed registration form and payment to 538 Arena drive, Soldotna, AK 99669 2. Drop-off completed registration form and payment at Parks & Rec Office (538 Arena Drive). 3. No pre-registration needed for drop-in activities. Class Confirmation There is no confirmation of classes. Please provide email address to receive class changes and cancelation updates. Do not wait until the last minute to register. Fees Class fees are to be paid at registration. Fees are charged to cover brochure, instructor and/or program support expenses. Refunds Refunds will ONLY be given for classes/ activities that are cancelled by the S.C.S. Program. Refunds granted for any other reason will be charged a 10% administration fee. Cancelations If KPBSD cancels classes due to inclement weather or is closed for vacations then S.C.S. classes will also be canceled. If minimum enrollment is not met 48 hours prior to the first class then it will be cancelled and participants will receive an email. Unsupervised Children Please do not bring children to adult classes or activities. This can be a distraction to other students and creates a liability for the S.C.S program. Photography Occasionally video and photographs are taken of participants for promotional use only. If you do not wish to participate please notify the photographer, instructor, or staff. No Smoking/Alcohol use policy The use of all tobacco products, marijuana or alcoholic on KPBSD premises is forbidden. YOUTH PROGRAMS Advanced Soccer Training 3rd to 5th graders This is not a team or official league, just an opportunity to learn and practice soccer skills. Soccer drills are designed to improve individual ball handing skills and small sided games of Futsal will be played to utilize these ball handling skills. Martial Arts - Youth This class will instruct children in the traditional Japanese based martial arts. Students will learn punching, kicking and blocking techniques as well as how to perform kata (choreographed martial art combinations). This class will help develop physical strength, flexibility, and mental awareness. It will also teach the history and philosophy of Japanese martial arts as well as a basic understanding of the Japanese vocabulary associated with the martial arts. ADULT & TEEN ART & HOBBIES Fur Sewing This class will demonstrate fur stretching and teach skin sewing techniques for making projects such as; trapper-style fur hats, women s dress band hats, sheepskin slippers with fur trim, baby booties, hats, children s mittens, sheepskin trooper-style hats, and earmuffs. Supplies for small ornament projects provided. All other materials will be available to purchase at class for larger projects. Learn everything from planning, planting, harvesting and preserving the harvest. This class will demonstrate that anyone can grow their own vegetables, herbs, fruit, grains and flowers. Regardless of where you live, whatever the weather, experience level, garden size, finances, available time, age or physical ability. Seeds and supplies will be provided to make seed tapes and start some plants for your garden. ADULT & TEEN ART & HOBBIES Astronomy - Lunar Eclipse Stop by to observe the total lunar eclipse. Make sure to bring very warm clothes, cookies and hot cocoa. Notice that the event occurs on Sunday, January 20 (news media may report Jan 21 but Alaska's time zone puts the event onto the previous date). Coffee Fundamentals Engage yourself in the world of coffee by exploring areas of: history, farm cultivation, home brewing methods and structured tastings. The class is a combination of lecture and handson learning. Students will walk away with a vocabulary in tasting and describing coffees as well as an understanding of home brewing equipment and techniques. At the completion of the second class students will receive a free 16 oz. bag of coffee to be taken home. ADULT & TEEN RECREATION Hall Walking Experts suggest walking 6,000 steps a day to improve health and 10,000 steps a day to lose weight. The halls are snow free and warm. Please no pets unless it is a service animal. Futsal (Indoor Soccer) Futsal is the best way to improve technical ability and touches in tight areas as well as speed of play. PARKS & RECREATION ICE PROGRAMS Ice Skating Institute s (ISI) Recreational Ice Skater Test Programs are used worldwide, have accepted standards, and have been developed for those who skate for recreation and enjoyment. These programs appeal to first time skaters because it teaches movements they can master almost immediately. It provides achievable objectives with immediate results. ISI skaters range in ages from two to 80+. Tots Classes (2-5 years): Tues. 12:15-1:00 PM. If they can walk they can skate. Beginning fundamentals from falling down and getting up, forward and backward swizzles, and an introduction to crossovers all done in a fun atmosphere All Age Class (2 to Adult): Tues. 6:30-7:15PM OR Saturdays 12:00pm-12:45PM. SOLDOTNA COMMUNITY SCHOOLS Soldotna Community Schools Mission: To promote life-long learning by providing educational, cultural, and recreational classes and activities for people of all ages, in partnership with the community and schools, utilizing the many resources provided through citizen involvement. Partnership: The Kenai Peninsula Borough School District and the City of Soldotna are proud to partner together to provide high quality educational and recreational activities, events, and programs. How to Register: 1. Mail completed registration form and payment to 538 Arena drive, Soldotna, AK 99669 2. Drop-off completed registration form and payment at Parks & Rec Office (538 Arena Drive). 3. No pre-registration for drop-in activities. Class Confirmation: There is no confirmation of classes. Please provide email address to receive class changes and cancelation updates. Do not wait until the last minute to register. Fees: Class fees are to be paid at registration. Fees are charged to cover brochure, instructor and/or program support expenses. Refunds: Program refunds will ONLY be given for classes/activities that are cancelled by S.C.S. Refunds granted for any other reason will be charged a 10% administration fee. Cancelations: If KPBSD cancels classes due to inclement weather or is closed for vacations then S.C.S. classes will also be canceled. If minimum enrollment is not met 48 hours prior to class it will be cancelled and participants will receive an email. Knowing that there can be a risk of injury or personal property damage, the participant's agree to assume full responsibility for any and all reasonable risk to themselves and will release, waive and hold the KPBSD & City of Soldotna and/or the Soldotna Community Schools Program and employees, agents and volunteers harmless from any and all actions, causes of action, claims, demands, damages, costs, loss of service, expenses and compensation, on account of, or in any way growing out of, any and all known and unknown personal injuries and property damage that might arise from the participant s involvement in the classes/activities. If the participant is a minor child, the undersigned parent/legal guardian consent to said minor child participating in classes and authorizes Soldotna Community Schools to obtain any and all necessary emergency medical care or treatment for the minor child, if reasonable attempts to notify the parent or legal guardian are unsuccessful. Participation in or attendance at programs or events sponsored by the Soldotna Community School Program constitutes the voluntary consent of the participant or attendee to: (a) be photographed, filmed or videotaped by a Department representative and (b) the reproduction and use of all such photographs, digital images, films and likenesses for publicity purposes in publications, brochures, advertisements, promotional and marketing materials and all other media venues.
