VOLUME 39, NUMBER 4 March/April 2015 Latest Tailwinds Derek Abramson, Editor What a busy couple of months. But here we are with summer just around the corner. I hope everybody has been able to get out and enjoy some of the good weather that has been had here in the Antelope Valley. Muroc Model Masters has been finally gearing up with flying on certain weekends at Muroc Dry Lake Bed. There will be an open house in the near future and we are invited to participate. Please check the website for details. On the field, you may have noticed some interesting looking obstacles being erected. There is a small but growing group of members who are now participating in Quad-Rotor Racing. The rules are simple, FPV through the course, the fastest wins. This is something that has been taking off recently with the advent of low cost electronics and very robust airframes. I am planning on giving it a try. At our May meeting, we will be having a swap-shop starting around 6:00PM. Please bring anything you might want to sell, or bring some cash to add something to your collection. Now for some business, it is that time again; the membership renewal period has started. There is a new address for snail mail. Attached to the newsletter is the new renewal form. Please remit payment via mail, monthly meeting or any club officer or BOD member. Until next time, keep those wings level. See everybody at the meeting/.swap-meet!! Page 1

President s Message Hello AVTI members! We had kind of an impromptu Night Fly on April 4 th. The weather forecast looked great so we got out the word as much as we could. Turned out the forecast was correct and several members had a great time getting in some flying. I had a blast flying my T-28 FPV at 10:30 at night! The full moon gave my camera enough light that I could see to shoot touchand-go s. Great fun! Sorry to have missed getting articles out last month. Seems like the time just flew by. We have changed our mailing address! We have moved to a different Post Office so our address is now, With the help of Tim Williams, Mack Moffat, Mike Loebel and Pete Carbin, along with others, the facilities at the field have been greatly improved. We have the new starting tables, new tables in the pits, tables installed on the container and power outlets on the container. There has also been a lot of work done to create the FPV Quad Racing Course. A lot of members are interested in trying the racing and we have also had interest from others currently outside the club. We have also had a generous loan by Mack Moffat of a 5K Honda generator. With the new wiring and it s greater capacity we have greatly improved the use of electricity at the field. If you re coming out to fly and would like to use the generator just bring gas. Ask one of the officers and they can open the container and get the generator going. The cracks to the taxiway and runway have been repaired. Mike Readman and his crew have done a great job and made flying even nicer. If you need that kind of work done around your home please keep him in mind. AVTI PO Box 1003 Rosamond, CA 93560 Which brings up the next topic! It is that time of year to renew your membership. The current membership expires on May 31, 2015. To stay active in the club you need renew before that date. And After the July meeting if you have not yet renewed there is a $10 Late Penalty. The next meeting on May 7 th we will be having a Swap Meet before the meeting. So gather up all that great stuff you re not using and make some money! Or bring a full wallet to do some buying. Hope to see you at the events and at the field! Tony Frackowiak Frackowiak@sbcglobal.net 661-992-1529 Page 3

Vice-President s Message Hey all, Mike and I have competed in a couple of contests this month. The first was held in the Orange County at the Irvin Lake area. It was the first time a contest has been held at this field and it was well attended. We had several AVTI members compete and they had several members taking care of the cooking and anything else that needed to be done. We spent the last weekend camping at the Bear Mountain flying site in Arvin. There were 40 pilots competing and several from our club placed within the top 3 in just about each class. Mike and I took Friday off so we headed up there Thursday after work so we could get in some practice before contest. There were several pilots who had the same idea so there was quite a wait time to fly. Saturday morning found Mike and I in a predicament. When we tried to open the bedroom door, the knob would not turn enough to release. We were stuck. We sat looking out the window waiting for someone to walk by to free us. After a few minutes Tony walked by and came to our rescue. After getting Jerry to move his van so he could get the back ramp down, Tony had to get a screw driver and remove the knob. That was a first. The weather was great and found us each evening barbecuing, night flying and enjoying an outdoor movie on a big screen with surround sound (Mike likes to rough it). The month of May will find us attending 3 contest, with the first in Apache Junction, AZ, two weeks later in Riverside and two weeks after that in Victorville. On another note, I had the opportunity to attend a NASA Educators workshop at the Palmdale facility 703. It is the 25 th anniversary of the Hubble Telescope and we were treated to an awesome presentation of the Hubble and the SOPHIA aircraft. The presenters for this event ranged anywhere from scientists who worked on both the Hubble and the infrared telescope on the SOPHIA, to the pilot. We spent over an hour touring the SO- PHIA, and the support labs. Hope to see you at the field. Jean General Meeting Minutes 05 March 2015 Compiled by Derek Abramson 1903 Meeting called to order by Tony Frackowiak Treasurers Report was read by Tony Frackowiak, voted and passed. Old Business Tim Willia,s, Pete Carbin and Mike Loebel finished the new tops for the starting tables. Good Job! Two Pattern Contests were held on February 7th and 8th. Thank you Mike and Jean Greear for handeling the scoring. Thanks to Preston for cooking! AVTI came out with $524.63. Page 4

With all of the racing, Tim, Pete and Mike also added tables and charging stations to the container. Barkley s Safety Tip April 23, 2015 Hey guys! The field sure looks great with all the new work being done. Let s try to keep it nice! Please clean up the starting tables after you use them. Wipe of any fuel or oil residue left behind. The new tops for the two tables in the pits are also looking great! Please don t try to sit on the edges as you may cause some damage. The tables and the power outlets on the container are also a very nice addition. But again, please do not sit on them! They are not built to take a persons weight. I hope to see you all at the field soon. I ll be the one wagging his tail! Page 7
