RNI. No. Regd. No. HD/245/2015-17 for the years 2015-17 Vol. I Number - 03 28-29, July 2017 Price Rs. 0.25 Ps. From the Chairman's Desk In May 2014 the World Health Organisation announced New Delhi as the most polluted city in the world. During 1 st to 9 th of November 2016, the Great smog of Delhi was an environmental event which saw New Delhi and adjoining areas in a dense blanket of smog, which was the worst in 17 years. The vehicle population on the Indian roads is increasing exponentially. Recent reports have found problems with pollution increasing, especially because of increasing use of vehicle transport. About 9 percent of India's emissions are from transportation (cars, trains, two wheelers, aero-planes & others). Traffic congestion is severe in India's cities and towns. Traffic congestion is caused for several reasons. Traffic congestion reduces average traffic speed. At low speeds, scientific studies reveal, vehicles burn fuel inefficiently and pollute more per trip. Traffic gridlock in Delhi and other Indian cities is extreme. The average trip speed on many Indian city roads is less than 20 kilometers per hour; a 10 kilometer trip can take 30 minutes, or more. At such speeds, vehicles in India emit air pollutants 4 to 8 times more than they would with less traffic congestion; Indian vehicles also consume a lot more carbon footprint fuel per trip, than they would if the traffic congestion was less. These emissions are byproducts from the engine combustion process and from the evaporation of fuel. Some of the air pollutants associated with vehicle emissions are carbon monoxide, ozone (smog = ozone at ground level is different from the ozone layer in the upper atmosphere, which filters out harmful solar radiation), sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, lead, particulate matter etc., Exposure to particulate matter for a long time can lead to respiratory and cardiovascular diseases such as asthma, bronchitis, lung cancer and heart attacks. In order to regulate the output of air pollutants from internal combustion engines and Spark-ignition engines equipment, including vehicles, Government of India has instituted Bharat Stage Emission Standards (BSES). Since October 2010, Bharat Stage (BS) III norms have been enforced across the country. Bharat Stage IV emission norms have been introduced since April 2010 in 13 major cities of India and from April 2017 onwards, these BS IV norms are enforced for whole country. In 2016, the Indian government announced that the country would skip the BS-V norms altogether and adopt BS-VI norms by 2020. While the industry has been able to produce technologies to meet the above emission norms and limit the emission of the dangerous chemicals, transport using fossil fuels cannot completely eliminate these emissions. Given its importance in current and future emission scenarios, innovations in road transport particularly vehicle technology is receiving a lot of attention from decision makers and consumers searching for more efficient mobility. Currently, therefore, technologists are developing and adapting fuel cell & hybrid vehicle technology for practical use in exhaust-free automobiles. Due to its importance and relevance to the present environmental conditions, the Institution of Engineers (India), Telangana State Centre has contemplated to conduct an All India Seminar on "Fuel Cells and Hybrid Vehicle Technology" on 18-19 August, 2017 under the aegis of Mechanical Engineering Division Board, to spread the awareness on the fuel cell technology and the working of hybrid vehicles to the engineering community and budding engineers. This Seminar covers various aspects of the advancements that this technology has to offer to the future generation. It will also cover the challenges posed to fuel cell technology as well as hybrid vehicles. With regards, Dr S Satyanarayana, FIE Chairman Chairman Dr S Satyanarayana, FIE VENUE FOR PROGRAMMES Hon.
