25/09/19 - Ise Jingu Tour Today you ll walk the ancient pilgrim s path to Ise Jingu, Japan s most important shrine. Start with the Wedded Rocks, an offshore pair of sacred stones that are a torii gate to offer prayers to the sunrise. Meet with Ama-san, women divers, while here. Enter the soaring forest surrounding Ise Jingu, and visit shrine buildings that are completely rebuilt every 20 years. Then step back into the stone streets of old Edo in Oharai-machi town and eat, drink and be merry just as the pilgrims of old used to do at end of a journey of hundreds of kilometers on foot. Once checked in, explore the city and ride the Hiroden streetcar around town to visit the five-story Hiroshima castle and adjacent Shukkei-en Garden, where mountains, valleys, forests and lakes are recreated in miniature. Be on the lookout for okonomiyaki, the signature dish of the region, and Hiroshima s famous oysters, which are excellent year-round. In the evening, settle in to a neighbourhood izakaya, Japan s version of a pub, for a series of small dishes to pair with the excellent local sake and beer. 30/09/19 - Hiroshima/Miyajima Tour Site of the world s first atomic bombing, the city of Hiroshima is now a symbol of the wish for world peace. Visit the Peace Memorial Park, then board a ferry to exquisite and iconic Miyajima Island, site of the floating red torii gate in front of Itsukushima Shrine. On the island, feed wild deer and walk through the gorgeous and sprawling shrine jutting out over the water. Return by ferry and visit the Kobo Brush Museum in neighbouring Kumano and make your own calligraphy brush. Visit Funai Castle Ruins at Oita Joshi Koen Park for the classic beauty of a castle keep on a moat surrounded by a sculpture-filled garden. Top it all off at City Spa Tenku, where the rooftop open-air bath overlooks the city and the ocean beyond. 4/10/19 - Transfer to Tokyo After breakfast, board our bus to the airport for you flight to Tokyo. After hotel check-in, the day is yours. Get the feel of traditional down-town Tokyo in the Sumida neighbourhood at the Edo-Tokyo Museum, and then visit Sumo Central at the nearby Kokugikan sumo tournament centre and museum. Local restaurants serve up chanko nabe, the stew eaten daily by sumo wrestlers. Experience zazen meditation at Tokyo Zen Centre, go for some ninja training in Shinjuku or take a class at Tokyo Sushi Academy before the afternoon match. 6/10/19 - Match Day: New Zealand v Africa 1, Tokyo Stadium, 13:45 You have a bit of free time in the morning before the early afternoon match. Take in the exciting area around Shibuya station and join the crowd at the world s busiest intersection. Or head out early for a walk through the sacred forest of Meiji Jingu, a Shintō shrine dedicated to the Meiji emperor set in a stunning landscape. Just outside the massive torii gate is Harajuku, Tokyo s pop culture central.
7/10/19 - Mt. Fuji Tour Fuji-san, as it is commonly known, is the highlight of the day. Japan s tallest peak and an active volcano, it is the beloved symbol of the nation and a sacred mountain. We travel by bus to Lake Kawaguchi, a beautiful reflecting pool for Fuji-san, and continue a water theme with a walk around the Oshino Eight Ponds for views of Fuji-san and traditional, rural scenery. We meet up with some ninjas at the Oshino Ninja Village before stopping for a lunch prepared with local ingredients, and then head up to the 5th station (out of 10), for an up-close Fuji-san experience, where you may visit the Shintō shine located there. Return to Tokyo by bus in time for dinner on your own. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch 8/10/19 - Transfer to Kyoto Take the bullet train for a fast trip to Kyoto, complete with a bento box lunch onboard. You re free after check-in to explore the wonders of the Old Capital. Visit Ni-jo castle, built in 1603 by Japan s first shogun, with masterpieces painted on sliding doors and a nightingale corridor that chirps under your footsteps. Head out of the city to Arashiyama and visit Tenryu-ji, a sprawling Zen temple compound dating to 1339, with gorgeous gardens and teahouses. End your day in awe as you traverse paths cutting through towering bamboo in the dark and mysterious Arashiyama Bamboo Forest. Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch. 10/10/19 - Nara Tour Today we visit nearby Nara, cultural treasure chest and Japan s first permanent capital. Meet the Great Buddha at Tōdai-ji temple, see hundreds of deer in Nara Park, and experience Kasuga Grand Shrine, protectorate of the Fujiwara Clan. More than 3,000 lanterns line the walk approaching the shrine, one for each of the 3,000 Kasuga shrines throughout the country. Like many Shintō shrines, Kasuga Grand Shrine is nestled in a sacred grove, and countless small wooden shrines and mossy, ancient stone lanterns dot the maze of paths through the forest. At the completion of the match you will be transferred back to Oita. 13/10/19 - Free Day After breakfast enjoy your free day in Nagoya.
