Project: The project deals with environmental awareness and sustainability in voluntary service. We want to celebrate the European Yer of Volunteering and look at different ways of volunteering in the ecological sector. Therefore we will see many ecological places in Berlin as forest schools, the museum of Nature, the zoo or laboratories that run experiments on ecology. VJF has German long term volunteers in all those partner institutions and want to have an exchange with young people from other countries on volunteering in ecological fields. Another point will be to visit a Berlin youth club that deals with ADAPTATION to climate change in the Berlin region and has a really exciting program to make people aware of what will be the changes and how to actually adapt to those changes. If there is interest we also might visit a waste processing plant to have a look behind the scenes, what actually happens with all the waste once we threw it in the bin. As we ran a youth exchange in May 2010 already and this was very successful, we also want to follow-up on what went on there. We want to also introduce the cookbook 4 climate action which we want to edit in 2011. This cookbook will be on actions to be taken to raise awareness on the local level. We want to try to actually implement those actions in Berlin and see how they work out. Besides all the actions and discussions, there will be enough time to explore one of the most dynamic and exciting cities in Europe: BERLIN! Location: Berlin Grünau, at a lake in the forest with a fire place, volleyball, table tennis, app. 1 h from the center Accommodation: You will live in bungalows. Self-catering. Participants: 25-30 (18-25 years) Conditions: 70% travel reimbursement, 100% food and accommodation 1

BELGIO CBB01 Terrain d Aventure, Liège 11/04/2011-22/04/2011 KIDS/FEST/12+1 VOL The project: The youth center Terrain d Aventure du Péri (Adventure Field) is a space of freedom, a place where children and youngsters learn to live altogether without anybody pushing them to efficiency, productivity, and all these objectives that adults like so much. At the Terrain d Aventure, a team of young leaders helps both children and teenagers to realize their ideas of do-it-yourself, games, sports, workshops, handcraft Activities are never compulsory, neither charged for, nor obligatory. At the Terrain d Aventure, youngsters are not consumers, but creators! The theme of this year festival is natural material branches, earth, stones etc. Next to that activity, there will be exhibitions, animations and shows. The symposium is based on the gathering and meeting between youngsters and adults. Local children will integrate the groups and help with the constructions. Last symposium attracted many visitors. Work: Volunteers will help in the preparation - first week - and follow-up of the event second week - as well as kids animation (games, workshops, sports etc), who run around all time starting at the open time and leaving at the closing time. Volunteers will also make sure that the place remains clean and they will give a hand to groups that might require help to build their sheds. So, work also can be physically demanding sometimes. The symposium is based on a dynamic meeting between participants and local children. Respecting a spirit of friendship and freedom, the volunteers will propose animations to youngsters attending the event. Accommodation: To be determined. Most likely, accommodation will be provided at the TA Peri itself. There are a kitchen, a toilette, a shower, though the conditions are very basic! A sleeping bag and a mat are necessary. The territory of volunteers will be respected, but can be passed by staff of the center. Food: Volunteers will cook themselves in the morning and evening (don t forget tasty recipes from your countries ), afternoon meals will be provided. Location: The youth center is located 10 minutes on foot away from the centre of Liège. It is a green area, on the top of a very active city. Liège is the biggest city in Wallonie (French speaking region in Belgium) and the third in size in Belgium. Its inhabitants joviality is well known around the country, with plenty of shops and pubs, it s night life is usually very animated. The town feels often very alive, depending on the traditional student events and of course on the local football team (le Standard) victories or defeats. Volunteers are responsible, with the help of their campleader, to organize their leisure time activities. The hosting organization doesn t provide a specific budget for these activities. 2

Specific information: In this workcamp you'll have to be ready to work, meet and communicate with children and youth people. Knowing French is not required but may, of course, be a good advantage while working. We expect participants to be dynamic and have good communication skills, be ready for work outdoor. ISLANDA WF17 Art and Renovation in Reykjavik 22/02 06/03 ART / RENO 6 vol Project Location: Reykjavik is a city full of energy, just waiting for you to experience it. Powered by heat from the earth below, with ever-changing weather sweeping across the landscape, its natural features are matched by the energy of its residents. Think of the qualities of a great city - fun, culture, nature, clean air - and Reykjavik has them in spades. All the advantages of a modern, forward-looking society are complemented by the beautiful natural setting. In a country of only just over 300,000 people, the Reykjavik Capital Area has a population of about 200,000. However, since it s the only major city in the country, Reykjavik has a lot of the amenities that you would only expect to find in a much larger center elsewhere in the world. Reykjavik is the world s northernmost capital city and is centered on the Seltjarnarnes Peninsula. Come at the right time of year, and in favorable conditions you will see the city s skyline silhouetted against the glowing, shimmering curtain of the aurora borealis, also known as the northern lights. Reykjavik is framed by the majestic Mt. Esja and the blue waters of Faxafloi Bay to the north, while rugged lava-fields spread to the southeast. On a clear sunny day, the Snaefellsjokull glacier glitters on the western horizon like a crystal. Work: The Art and Renovation in Reykjavik camp has two major activities. 5

WF Iceland is currently renovating houses in downtown Reykjavik so that they can be used to host intercultural workshops. During the camp, volunteers will paint, move furniture, and continue renovating the houses, and should prepare for these things by bringing appropriate work clothes. Volunteers will also participate in art workshops chosen according to their interests. Leisure: Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local geothermally-heated swimming pools in Reykjavik. Traditionally, natural pools have played an important social role in Icelandic culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as hot tubs and saunas or steam rooms. On weekends, the central location of the accommodations is ideal for enjoying Reykjavik s amazing nightlife, which is world-renowned for its wide array of bars, clubs, and concerts. WF Iceland will also organise reasonably-priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include unique Icelandic sights such as glacial lagoons, waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, geysirs, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents, or even icebergs. Accommodation and Food: Worldwide Friends volunteers stay in one of several shared houses offering basic sleeping and cooking facilities in the heart of historical downtown Reykjavik. Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bag and towels, but mattresses and bed linens are provided. Wireless internet access is provided free of charge, and volunteers also have free access to shared desktop computers in communal areas. The accommodation provided by Worldwide Friends Iceland for volunteers in Reykjavik is located within short walking distance of many urban amenities, including: banks, pharmacies, supermarkets, public swimming pools, restaurants, cafes, libraries, theaters, shops, museums, and bus stations. Food is included for the duration of the workcamp, however everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favorite recipes from home! Language: A basic knowledge of English is required for this workcamp. Additional Information: There is an extra participation fee of 120,- Euro for this workcamp. This friendly little community sits on top of a highly active geothermal field, which provides heat for hundreds of greenhouses where fruit, flowers and vegetables are produced throughout the year. Even bananas grow in these greenhouses! The name Hveragerði means hot springs garden. Geothermal energy 6

is Hveragerði s lifeblood, and you probably won t find such a natural wonder in the middle of a populated area anywhere else in the world. Nearby you will find an even more geothermally active site: Gufudalur, the lovely Steam Valley behind the town. This whole valley is full of hot springs, geysers, mud pots, fumaroles and steaming vents. Our host is the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic, which is a part of the Natural Health Association of Iceland. Every year approximately 2,000 patients and other guests enjoy their diverse rehabilitation programs, which are focused on an approach that builds self-confidence and personal responsibility for the patients own health. The Clinic has earned a solid reputation, both in Iceland and internationally, since its foundation in 1955 for personal and effective care of patients. It is the oldest and one of the two most important rehabilitation clinics in Iceland. Work: The Natural Health Association has a horticultural and environmental department, including forestry, gardening, and greenhouses, which is where Worldwide Friends volunteers work most of the time. The nature of the work depends largely on weather conditions, which can change quickly. Volunteers should bring clothes appropriate for outdoor work. Leisure: Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local geothermally-heated swimming pools. Traditionally, natural pools have played an important social role in Icelandic culture. Most Icelandic pools offer indoor and outdoor swimming, as well as hot tubs and saunas or steam rooms. Hveragerði is known for having great areas for hiking, including a river heated by hot springs. Accommodation and Food: Worldwide Friends volunteers stay in a fully equipped bungalow consisting of several double rooms. Volunteers need to bring their own sleeping bag, but mattresses are provided. Free wireless internet is available, but volunteers need to bring their own laptops if they would like to connect to it. All meals are provided and cooked by our hosts, the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic. The menu for the project is primarily vegetarian, but two times a week it includes locally-caught fish from Iceland. The food at the Rehabilitation and Health Clinic is known throughout Iceland for its high quality. Language: A basic knowledge of English is required for this workcamp. Additional Information: There is an extra participation fee of 120, Euros for this workcamp. Only three percent of Icelanders have participated in volunteer activities, and so there is great potential to encourage young people to volunteer both at home here in Iceland as well as with WF's international partners. The workcamp volunteers will collaborate to choose a focus for the film and develop a production schedule. Work: For the past several months Worldwide Friends Iceland has been restoring old buildings in the centre of Reykjavi. The goal has been to create a cultural center where international volunteers together with young Icelandic people can share a space to plan, promote, and organize cultural, artistic, and environmental activities. The idea for a cultural center was generated in early 2010 when it became apparent that Reykjavik lacked a space for young people to express their ideas and collaborate on volunteer projects. Only three percent of Icelanders have participated in volunteer activities, and so the cultural center will help promote the concept of voluntarism through the experiences of international volunteers. Work: The aim of this workcamp is to give volunteers the opportunity to learn about the myths and legends of runes and the old Viking religion. Volunteers create runes out of Icelandic volcanic magic stones, producing enough for the participant to take one set home and to leave others in the WF cultural centre in Reykjavik. During the project volunteers collect volcanic stones from specific places in the west part of Iceland where nature has shaped and made really beautiful magic stones. Afterwards they convert the stones into runes in the WF workshop in Reykjavik. Volunteers learn about the history of the places where the stones come from, as well as the importance of the healing energy of the stones. The workcamp will include a visit to Snæfellsnes, the location of the glacier Snæfellsjökull, which is famous for the power and energy that many spiritually-minded people sense. It is said to be one of the seven greatest energy centres of the earth. The workshop is divided into two parts: Workshop 1º: 1. Travel to collect the stones 2. Define different designs to be carved into the stones 3. Carve the stones and transform them into runes 4. Paint over the design carved into each rune 5. Cut leather and make bags for each set of runes 6. Print and create the legend for each bag Workshop 2º: 1. Define different drawings and designs for necklaces and bracelets 2. Carve the stones with different designs 3. Paint over the design carved into each rune 4. Finalize necklaces and bracelets 11

WF113 Rock Festival in the Western Fjords 19/04 01/05 FEST / MANU Project Location: Isafjörður is the principal town of the Western fjords peninsula, in the North-West corner of Iceland. The town has approximately 4000 inhabitants. The community stretches over 2400 square 13

kilometres, from the beautiful waterfall Dynjandi in the south, to the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the north, where, amongst other things, one can find the famous cliff Hornbjarg which is one of the largest colonies for seabirds in the North Atlantic. The town of Isafjörður stands on a narrow spit in Skutulsfjörður, which meets the waters of the larger fjord Isafjardardjup. The town is surrounded by mountains that offer endless opportunities to enjoy nature and wilderness during all seasons of the year. Despite its small population, the town has a rather urban, or one could say international, atmosphere. It is known throughout the country for its rich cultural life, with music and visual arts having long tradition and firm roots in the town s history. Being the capital of the Western fjords peninsula, Isafjordur is the centre for services and administration in the area. For the last two days of the workcamp the volunteers will stay in Reykjavík, enjoying life in the capital of Iceland. Aldrei fór ég suður is a Rock festival which will be held for the seventh time this year during the Easter holidays. It serves as a showcase for both some of the best known bands in Iceland and young musicians just starting their careers. Work: Worldwide Friends volunteers will assist the organizers of the festival. For example, tasks may include preparing the venues before the concerts, putting the venues back in order afterwards, and helping to control access to the venues and other festival sites. Volunteers will also have full access to all the concerts at the festival. In addition to the music festival, the Ísafjörður Ski Week has been held during Easter for over 70 years, and so during the week there are all kinds of outdoor events in the day and parties during the night. Accommodation and Food: Worldwide Friends volunteers will stay in an indoor community facility. Mattresses are provided, however volunteers should bring their own warm sleeping bags. Food is included for the duration of the workcamp, however everyone is expected to do their fair share of the cooking and cleaning. Since it is always nice to try new and different dishes, volunteers are encouraged to bring along their favorite recipes from home! Terminal: Intl. Airport: Keflavík (Reykjavík), KEF. The closest domestic airport is Ísafjörður. WF Iceland will organize a minibus from Reykjavik to the workcamp site for reasonable price. During the drive we will stop at beautiful places and do some sightseeing along the way. Language: A basic knowledge of English is required for this workcamp. WF115 Water, Nature, and Sustainable Energy 05/04 17/04 ENVI / STUDY Project Location: Iceland is a country extremely rich in water resources. Frequent rainfall, snow, and ice melt feed lakes, cold-water springs, and rivers all over the island, some of which is used to generate electricity in hydro-power plants. The country is situated on the mid-atlantic ridge, and there is constant volcanic activity beneath the surface of many parts of the island. As a result, many natural underground water reservoirs are heated geothermally, and where this water comes to the surface it forms hotsprings and geysirs. Heat from these geothermal water reservoirs is used for making electricity and to heat buildings. Iceland is the only western country that obtains all of its electricity needs from emission-free and sustainable natural resources in the form of geothermal and hydro power. The camp will be based in Reykjavik but will include extensive travel around Iceland to the south, east, and north to visit a variety of different sites. This will involve driving for over 2000km over several days to travel all around the island in order to effectively carry out the study/visit program of the workcamp. Reykjavik is a city full of energy, just waiting for you to experience it. Powered by heat from the earth below, with ever-changing weather sweeping across the landscape, its natural features are matched by the energy of its residents. In the morning, Worldwide Friends volunteers perform outdoor work, which may include planting trees, fixing hiking paths, or weeding greenhouses. In the afternoon, volunteers will work together on the study theme, Water, Nature, and Sustainable Energy. This will include workshops, discussions, and also occasional site visits to relevant natural features, plants, infrastructure, and industries. Examples of potential site visit destinations include geothermal and hydropower plants, geothermal hot springs, geysirs, waterfalls, public wastewater treatment plants, public water supply plants, and companies that make major use of water and electricity, such as aluminum smelters. Since the workcamp will include discussions and workshops, an intermediate level of English is required. Study theme: Water, nature and sustainable energy. Leisure: Worldwide Friends volunteers have free access to the local geothermally-heated swimming pools in Reykjavik.
