August - 2017 Council Leader s Message August 2017 Hi Everyone,. Summer is flying by and we will soon be into Fall. I hope all of you have had a wonderful summer. I look forward to Fall and the cooler weather and hearing about everyone s summer adventures. 2017 FFWC Calendar Next meeting will be the August 17th, 6:15 pm, First Baptist Church at 720 Grand Ave. Use church s east entrance, then go downstairs. See exchange opportunities on Page 3. Need a new nametag? Get one for $15.00! A big Thank You goes out to the Social Committee, Kathy Nielsen and Bev Campos for the July picnic at Hawthorne Park. Thank you to the 27 members in attendance who furnished the salads, desserts and drinks. We are blessed with many great cooks who so generously contribute to all our events. Our next event will be an Ice Cream social on August 17 at 6:15 at the First Baptist Church, 720 Grand Ave. The social committee will be calling everyone to bring either Ice cream or a topping. Jim Witt will be at the church by 6:00pm to run the elevator. Thank you to Kathy Nielsen for being our Council Leader for July. You did a great job. Journey and Conference News Western Colorado FFI Journeys Sherbrooke Canada Incoming, October 13-20, 2017 (HJC) Sue Moyer Sherbrooke will come to Grand Junction first and then go to the Grand Canyon and on to Central Arizona. There will be 13 ambassadors. There are 4 couples and 3 single women coming. We are in contact with a local French speaking group that we've invited to the welcome and farewell parties and hope to get some of them to participate in portions of the exchange Charlotte Outgoing, October 5th-11th, 2017 (AJC) Renee Feitelberge Since we were unable to fill Charlotte last year, we are invited to join with the Quad Cities on their journey. Cindy is going to Colonial Williamsburg prior to this journey, so check with her if you are interested. In any leg of this trip. There are still spots available. Saskatoon and another city in Canada Outgoing, June 2018 (AJC) Needed I just confirmed, Western Colorado is the only club going and can have 14 ambassadors. It will be in the first part of June, but dates are not yet finalized. Penticton-Okanagan, Canada Incoming, September 2018 (HJC) Needed Canada will be coming to Flathead Valley, Cheyenne, Western Colorado and somewhere in Montana in September. We have not had many discussions on this, yet. Other Region s Journeys Taiwan, Jakarta, Malang, Depasar, Hong Kong Indonesia, September 8-28, 2017 Estimated air fare PXD $2,000. Hotels, tours, FFI host clubs, transportation, etc, estimated $1,600. If interested contact FFI office. If interested in more information contact Sue Palmer to receive the flyer. Kampala, Uganda, October14-21, Nairobo, Kenya, October 21-28, 2017 (AJC) Jack Green & Ilene Americus Come experience the culture, food, history, and scenery of Uganda and Kenya by joining Friendship Force Denver for a 3 week journey in eastern Africa. The Journey included 2 home stays, and an optional Safari excursion to several of Kenya s National Parks and Wildlife Reserves. If interested contact Sue Palmer to receive the flyer. Japan - Samurai Tours, September 19-November, 2017 Cost $2700.00 per person, Single Supplement $750.00. Meet English speaking guide and travel with the group to Tokyo, Nagoya/ Aichi, Himeji Castle, Kurashik, Fukuyama, and Kyoto. If interested ask Verna or Sue for more information. Metro Vancouver - A Thanksgiving Celebration of Canada's, October 2-9, 2017 They are inviting a delegation of international Ambassadors to celebrate "A Thanksgiving Celebration of Canada's 150th Anniversary". We need: 1) Home Hosts. Two of our couples need a host with no pets! One has a gluten intolerance. She is the ambassador that won t arrive until Monday, so there are only 4 nights of hosting. 2) Small Dinner Hosts. Monday, Oct 16. 3) Drivers. Sunday the 15 th (Colorado National Monument), Monday, October 16 th (Winery in the afternoon), and Tuesday the 17 th (day trip to Arches). 4) Volunteers. To set up and take down at the welcome party (Church of the Nativity on Oct 14 and Unitarian Church on October. 19) Highway 65 Clean-up between mile markers 30 & 32 Friendship Force is scheduled for our annual highway clean up project on Monday, September 11, 2017. We will meet at Starvin' Arvin's parking lot in Clifton at 9:00 that morning and car-pool up to our assigned spot. The clean-up got cancelled last year because of icy roads so this year we really do need to clean up the roadside. We need to have a least nine (9) people sign up. Lunch will be provided for the workers. I have orange safety vests, orange trash bags and pokey sticks. You will need to bring gloves and of course, hats, sunscreen, etc. 6

Vermacillii Pasta (Cook 6 minutes no salt) ½ Cup Olive Oil 2 Heaping Tablespoons Cavendar s Greek Seasoning (Safeway/City Market Deli s) 3 Tablespoon Lemon Juice ~ MARINATE 4 HOURS THEN ADD: ~ 1 Small Can Black Olives, Chopped 1 Small Jar Pimentos 5 Green Onions, chopped with tops 2 Tablespoon Mayonnaise Serves 6 NOTE: Instead of Vermacilli Pasta you can also use thin spaghetti Enjoy Sue Palmer 7

Minutes of FFI Western Colorado Monthly Meeting July 2017 7/21/17 No meeting in July 2017, it was the July picnic. We had one our best turnouts for the July picnic, rain or not. Everyone had plenty to eat and enjoyed visiting with friends. 8
