Live, work and play at 301 Ohio Street This mixed-use development project was designed with its surroundings in mind. 301 Ohio Street in Buffalo, N.Y. consists of five floors and 52,000 square feet of all new construction. Twenty-one apartment units in both one- and two-bedroom configurations are located on the upper three floors, ranging from 878 to 1,400 square feet. The building also has two restaurants on the first floor and 10,000 square feet of commercial space on the second floor. Each apartment unit is equipped with a modern interior and a balcony, providing scenic views of the Buffalo River and Lake Erie. This whole building was a new build, Caitlin Krumm, manager of marketing and sales for Ellicott Development, says. Ellicott Development owns the 301 Ohio Street property. This exciting new building delivers modern architecture, great views of the Buffalo River and build-tosuit floor plans just blocks from historic downtown, Canalside, KeyBank Center, Coca-Cola Field and River Fest Park. 301 Ohio is the epitome of Buffalo s renaissance. Scott Finn of Picone Construction, project manager for the 301 Ohio Street project, says that work began on this building in July of 2015. Krumm says plans are currently underway for an addition of beach volleyball courts and boat slips outside for added recreation. The 21 apartment units are nearly all leased, and we are in the process of leasing out the available commercial space on the first and second floors, Krumm says. Robert Stark, architect of CJS Architects, says the design for 301 Ohio Street included vertical elements to reference the grain elevators across the river. The Corten steel panels are meant to recall the industrial nature of the past industries along the Buffalo River, Stark says. A Whole (Foods) new world Whole Foods Market to open first location in Western New York On June 30, 2016, WS Development announced that the first phase of construction began on the redevelopment of Northtown Plaza. According to a press release, a 50,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market will be built within the venue and it ll be the first Whole Foods Market to open in Western New York. Kenmore Mercy Hospital s latest renovations, additions By Cindy Chan Kenmore Mercy Hospital is in the midst of a welldeserved makeover. According to Jim Sullivan of Picone Construction, the general contractor, the hospital s main project was the Phase 1 project which was the operating room expansion built by Telco Construction the year before. The principal section of the Phase 2 work performed by Picone Construction was carried over three phases beginning in September of last year. The recently completed first phase of the Phase 2 project was the expansion and relocation of the surgery holding and recovery unit. The second phase was the total renovation and expansion of the post-surgical anesthesia unit (PACU), and the third phase, recently completed, included several smaller renovations, specifically a new surgery department administrative suite, the expansion of surgical locker rooms, new offices for the medical staff, a new medical library and conference room and a new physicians lounge. Sullivan says the approximately 14,000 square-foot surgery holding and recovery unit now consists of 32 new bays, of which 11 are private rooms, along with a new waiting room and reception area. The second phase is the installation of a PACU unit, consisting of 12 treatment bays for patients immediately after surgery, an isolation room and a new nurses station. Sullivan says this unit received new floor finishes, ceilings and skylights. As a result of all these changes, the hospital had to move quite a lot of staff members around. What is important about this project is that Catholic Health and Kenmore Mercy Hospital went to extra lengths to install specialized materials in and on the walls, on the ceilings and on the floors to create an extremely quiet and stress-free environment for patients while they prepare for and recover from surgery more easily and peacefully, states Gary Constantino, Catholic Health s corporate director for facility planning, design and con- 52 Construction Exchange of Buffalo & Wny, Inc.

struction. Kenmore Mercy Hospital is one of Catholic Health s health care campuses. Sleep and rest are vitally important to a patient s healing, recovery, and total health, says Constantino. Within the holding and recovery unit and PACU, patients, visitors and nurses are able to control the level of lighting at their bedside. Because of this feature, patients can control their own environment and have less need to call or wait for assistance. This leaves nurses more time to be at the bedside of patients who need them. Constantino worked with Kideney Architects to create a pleasant environment that did not appear institutional and where many elements of the design were based on evidence-based design research for health care environments which have proven to provide healthier patient outcomes. There are multiple skylights throughout the unit, which are placed along the patient s path and near the nursing station to bring natural light inside for all to appreciate. The design also features an elaborate ceiling design which incorporates these skylights and that originates in the waiting room. The ceiling design weaves through the holding/recovery unit and PACU, providing interest and a familiar aspect of the space in an effort to enhance each patient s experience, Constantino says. The new units don t look or have an institutional feel. In addition to the newly added operating suites, Constantino mentioned that Kenmore Mercy Hospital underwent several large projects over the last few years specifically a 70,000-squarefoot expansion on the south side of its campus that included a new and expanded state-of-the-art emergency department at ground level and a new orthopedic unit with 24 private rooms and a newly renovated and connected rehabilitation unit for physical, occupational and speech therapy.
