MARKET REPORT WEEK 13 BASED ON SALES AND PURCHASES OF VESSELS WEEK ENDED FRIDAY 1 st APRIL 2011 Last week ended up a disappointment on the freight side with only the BHSI making any gain albeit less than 1% w-o-w. The BPI took the biggest hit by losing -7.36% w-o-w reflecting a lot of spot tonnage and a reduction in the number of grain shipments from South America. The Supras and handymax's lost ground too (the BSI closed over -5.5% down), also due largely by diminished grain fixtures but like the panamaxes also thwarted by the fact there are just too many ships available - especially new Supras. The Capes had an up and down week but ended up loosing just under 1% w-o-w. On the S+P front, it was another quiet week with only a small volume of sales reported. We note a couple of quality resale supra sales in last 2 weeks (from STX and Imabari) which suggest current benchmark levels are being maintained for quality vessels, whilst at same time 'benchmark' levels for China built Supras are not so defined which probably reflects the large differences in build quality from yard to yard there, which in turn causes sales of China built vessels to struggle whilst sellers and buyers try to find common ground on values. The demolition market continues to fascinate because even though Bangladesh still hasn't managed to reopen the rest of the subcontinent continues to pay excellent prices, whereby tankers currently obtain region $520-530 level with drycargo vessels around $500-510 depending on specs. China meantime remain steady at around $430-440 for bulkers and $450-460 for tankers.
