Page 2 Mansfield Kiwanis Newsletter A Call for Service By: Greg Barberee Mansfield Kiwanis New President Steve Hallford has entered office with a call to service to the Club. Are you a Kiwanian or are you a Kiwanis Club Member? A Kiwanian is dedicated to the goals and ideals our Club and Kiwanis International. Specifically, a Kiwanian is dedicated to serving the children of Mansfield and the World. The Mansfield Kiwanis cannot support our Service Leadership Programs (i.e.: Key Clubs and Builders Clubs), give scholarships to graduating MISD Seniors, or financially support the Feed the Kids for Summer Program without raising funds. Yes, asking for sponsors of our events or asking for donations in general may make you feel uncomfortable but if you don t ask who will? Our Club relies on each Kiwanian to do their part to support the children of Mansfield. If we are not committed then we are just members of social club. Over 40 years ago a group of likeminded community leaders established the Kiwanis Club of Mansfield to make a difference in the lives of the children in Mansfield. As Kiwanians, we are honored to carry on this privilege and legacy. The Fall is a major fundraising time for our Club. We have the Bob Noel Tennis Classic at Walnut Creek Country Club scheduled for November 4-6, 2016. If you know of any tennis players that might be interested in playing, please direct them to the USTA website for registration at: http://tennislink.usta.com/tournaments/tournamenthome/tournament.aspx?t=175594. Also, we will be hosting the Fa La La La 5K and Fun Run on Saturday, December 3, 2016. This is our annual Christmas themed family 5K and fun run/walk at Rose Park and along the Walnut Creek Linear Trail. The Fun Run starts at 8:45 AM and the 5K start at 9:00 AM. Please pass along the registration information (link below) to any friends or family members that might be interested in participating. I would also encourage you to forward the information to Elementary School PE Teachers since most Elementary Schools have Run Clubs and seek local runs for participation. You can register online at: https://secure.getmeregistered.com/get_information.php?event_id=124976. Finally, we need sponsors for these events. A copy of the Club s Joint Brochure is included with this week s newsletter so you will have the correct information when discussing sponsorships with local businesses. The Club (and the children of Mansfield that we support) thank you for your dedication and support of our fundraising activities. Student of the Month Continued from Page 1 Samuel has been very active in many clubs and activites during high school. He is a member of the Lake Ridge High School Key Club, the Academic Decathlon Team, competes in UIL Spelling & Vocabulary, and is a member of the Ping Pong Club and Multiculteral Club. The Mansfield Kiwanis are honored to present the October Student of the Month Award to Samuel Oshoba. The Club was also honored that Samuel s father, Kay Oshoba, was able to attend the presentation of the award. The Mansfield Kiwanis wish Samuel the best of luck in all of his future endeavors. We know that he will do great things in the future.
