Foreword I m delighted to be celebrating another Positive Ageing Month and this year s theme is to promote the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights by older people. 2018 marks the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and almost 40 years later, the UN Principles for Older Persons were adopted. Growing older does not diminish a person s inherent dignity and fundamental rights and principles such as independence, participation, care, self-fulfillment and dignity are still as relevant and important to older people today as they were 40 years ago. These principles and that of participation in particular, recognise the tremendous diversity of older people and the importance of opportunities that enable them to participate in and contribute to the ongoing activities within our society. The ability of older people to remain integrated with others and share their knowledge and skills within their communities means that we will all benefit from the growth of our ageing population. I am privileged to have met with thousands of older people from across rthern Ireland during my time in office so far. As I hear about their lives, I am consistently impressed by the positive difference that older people make to their families and communities every day. Many continue to play pivotal supporting roles within families by providing childcare, doing the school run, helping with homework and preparing meals. Many faith groups and voluntary organisations simply could not exist without the help of their older volunteers. Theme: Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions 1 Foreword

Research commissioned by my office demonstrated that older people will make a net contribution of 25 billion to the economy of rthern Ireland over the next 50 years - a figure that shouldn t surprise anyone who witnesses the role older people play here on a daily basis. Our Health and Social Care System is also underpinned by the amazing dedication of the 50,000 unpaid older carers in rthern Ireland who play a key role in enabling loved ones, relatives or friends to remain at home, saving the NHS millions of pounds each year. With a health system under increasing pressure and older people living longer than ever before, the importance of older carers will continue to increase so it is essential that their role is respected and valued and that they in turn receive the support that they require. Events such as Positive Ageing Month are a great way to take a moment to recognise the positive contribution that older people make to our society. I congratulate the South Eastern HSC Trust on putting together a wide range of events to mark this event and hope you can get along to them so we can all celebrate the positive impact of our ageing population. Eddie Lynch Commissioner for Older People for rthern Ireland Foreword 2

Introduction Positive Ageing Events - October 2018 Positive Ageing Month is an opportunity to highlight the important contributions that older people make to society and raise awareness of the issues and challenges of ageing in today s world. The theme of the 2018 commemoration is: Celebrating Older Human Rights Champions 5 facts about the ageing population in rthern Ireland: By 2027 the number of over 65 s will jump by 44% and the number of over 85 s will double by 2029 Year 2027 Year 2029 44% over 65 s over 85 s will double Year 2018 Over 65 s make up 15% of todays population. Today there are 109,000 more under 16s than there are over 65. By 2037 that will have completely reversed with predictions there will be 122,000 more over 65 s than under 16 s The number of under 65 s will grow by just 1.5% by 2022. The promotion of active healthy ageing is a global challenge and one that is being grasped by all Government Departments. We have an Active Ageing Strategy: https://www.communities-ni.gov.uk/sites/default/files/ publications/ofmdfm/active-ageingstrategy.pdf This strategy is designed to ensure that rthern Ireland is an age friendly region in which people, as they get older, are valued and supported to live actively to their fullest potential, with their rights respected and their dignity protected.
