Seagate Yacht Club THE BURGEE PUBLISHED BI- MONTHLY VOLUME 5, #1, January, 2014

JOSEF DAVYDOVITS, COMMODORE As I take up my new role as Commodore of SeaGate Yacht Club, I am experiencing a bit of anxiety and nervousness. I actually welcome this feeling as I thrive and perform better under pressure. Whatever issues this new endeavor brings along with my first mate, Kim, by my side we will handle it, learn from it and improve upon it. I take great comfort in knowing that we have an incredible team on the board to support me and run the club. In this article I want to thank each volunteer (the emphasis here VOLUNTEER). Each individual that does incredible work is willing to put forth for the management of our club for 2014. In no particular order I want to acknowledge Tom Worden, our Webmaster, who works diligently in the background to provide us the most comprehensive and best looking website I have ever seen for any organization such as ours. Check out the new improved feature on the website, at each event listed (hint: ship). The resourcefulness provided by Linda Axel & Deborah Fairon to stock up with new logo merchandise in our ships store is very important in promoting our clubs identity and provides opportunity for our members to proudly wear these items. Aurelia Okino, the membership chair, is continuing to serve for a second year. She is doing an incredible job performing the duties of her office, including the very complex job of membership record-keeping and renewal notices, which is the life s-blood of our club. Another key person on recordkeeping is Bob McCormick. He has done and is continuing to do the critical work required to publish our annual roster booklet. This membership guide is the bible our members rely on to communicate and interact with each other. This year Bob is planning to publish the roster in color for the first time. Bob s volunteer work does not stop here, he also does a superb job year after year coordinating and building the SGYC entry into the Boat Parade that resulted in winning the respected awards almost every year. The continuing efforts of Rob and Cindy Allen are another example of the dedication our members put into this club. Cindy Allen will return as the club Secretary. Her terrific job keeping all the board meeting notes accurately and keeping the monthly meetings on track (always challenging) is invaluable for our board. Rob Allen continues managing and running the most valued club function, Port/House Chair. Our club events could not be successful without his unconditional support. He makes sure that each event has plenty of liquid refreshment stock and supplies and coordinates the offsite events. He makes this complex task seemed effortless. Rob is also go to guy for any improvements and fixes needed around the club house. Lisa Zia is returning as our treasurer. All the club s finances and accounts are handled by her. Her duties do not end with the board meetings. She reliably deals with the bank and prepares detailed financial reports. Joel Lander, communications chairperson, is the editor of our awesome bi-monthly "Burgee" newsletter. His talented work editing, designing and arranging all the articles and features make it a colorful and interesting publication and a pleasure to read each and every time. He also compiles submits articles to the Harbor Light magazine on our behalf. Our new Vice Commodore for 2014 is Gil Morris moving up to this position and with the other flag officers he will be responsible for the general needs of the club business, provide support to event hosts and to the board necessities. I am glad to have Gil on my team, he is very supportive. I am pleased to announce my appreciation to have Dr. Mark Monroe as our new Rear Commodore. He brings to the SGYC Board table experience that he has gained having served on the board of HHYC and the International Order of the Blue Gavel. I am thankful for the great team of flag officers that presently served on the board. Speaking of flag officers, Jeff Specht will move into the Jr. Staff Commodore position. I will rely on his experience and wisdom to continue providing advice for this year s leadership. His valued service over the past 3 years is greatly appreciated and it was my pleasure to have provided him with the support he needed. Besides overseeing many changes and improvements to the club during his Commodore year, Jeff upgraded the TV s speakers and the video/sound system that now we all enjoy in the use of our Club House. Thank you Jeff for the great job I am looking forward to serving the club needs and working with the above mentioned team in 2014. I encourage you to contact me with any issues and comments. Respectfully yours, Josef Davydovits

GIL MORRIS, VICE COMMODORE -TASTIC. Ahoy fellow boaters and Yacht Club members. I hope you had a chance to enjoy this year s Boat Parade, I want to thank Robin & Jean Clark for allowing SeaGate Yacht Club to enter their boat the FIN-TASTIC in this year s Boat Parade we won Best Yacht Club but it was not there first Rodeo the FIN-TASTIC won Sweepstakes in the 2011 s Boat Parade and next time you go into Trader Joe s look at the mural painted on the wall above the exit it s the FIN I want to personally thank to Bob McCormick for designing and building the world landmark that were used to decorations the boat, thanks to all the SeaGate members that installed the decorations and thanks to Dale Giali for downloading the music to his IPOD so we could play it on the Clubs new sound system. The new sound system is great. My family has a long history in boating the first members of the Morris Family cruised to America from Wales in the early 1700 s. I was born and raised in Altadena just north of Pasadena. My great grandmother lived close to the Horseshoe Pier in Redondo Beach the story goes that she would walk out onto the Pier to fish into her 90 s. I have been into boating since the early 80 s. I bought a 28 Bayliner in the mid 80 s and kept it in a slip in Long Beach until I moved from Whittier to SeaGate in 1998. Boating was a new thing for Chris she had never been on the ocean in a boat until we went on a SeaGate Yacht Club cruise to Avalon and she loved it. Until Chris and I bought the ChrisSeaGil I had never owned a boat over 28 the ChrisSeaGil is a 35 PT Cruiser twin diesel, Chris and I had a lot to learn as captain and first mate we have had the boat for 3 year and both love it. I want you all to know it is my pleasure to serve the Club as Vice Commodore this year, my wife Chris will be with me every step of the way. I am looking forward to a fun year of boating and great events. What a beautiful Commodore s Ball. The Westminster Rose Center put out all the fixings for us and made SeaGate Yacht Club feel right at home. Commodore Jeff and Bonnie Specht hosted over 80 elegantly dressed members and guests. The evening began with light piano music by Dead Men Rockin, followed by trays of hot appetizers. The ceremony began with Commodore Specht honoring all the attending veterans, Staff Commodores and guests. Staff Commodore Mike Courtway did the invocation and Pledge of Allegiance. Everyone feasted on salmon and prime rib with all the trimmings including enough wine on each table to get everyone ready to party. Commodore Specht thanked the past board and gave them gifts of appreciation. Also, all the events hosts were given gifts and thanked for all their hard work and a Job well done for a truly fun year. The new board was sworn in by Jr. Staff Commodore Dale Giali. Our new Commodore, Josef Davydovits, was sworn in and wished good luck by all. Commodore Jeff Specht and Bonnie were thanked for all their hard work and leadership for the year. Members then danced the night away with Dead Men Rockin a four piece live band. At one time the dance floor was full and there was not one person sitting at the tables. Truly a fun event not to forget!

DR. MARK MONROE, REAR COMMODORE Fellow yachtspersons! Thank you so much for electing me to be your next Rear Commodore. I am excited for all events planned for next year and am looking forward to meeting all of you in person. My name is Mark Monroe. I have been residing on Huntington Harbour s Admiralty Island since 1993. I live there with my beautiful family: my wife Lina, my daughters Robyn and Michelle, and my son David. We are all avid sailors and enjoy taking out our sailboat RoMiDa as often as possible. She is a 49 foot sloop and is a lot of fun. I am a practicing Family physician in Fountain Valley/Huntington Beach/Santa Ana since 1983. I am also the current chairman of the Family Practice department at the Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and the chairman of the Continual Medical Education department at the Coastal Communities hospital. I have been writing medical articles for the Burgee, the Breeze (Huntington Harbour Yacht Club newsletter), International Order of Blue Gavel, and United States Coast Guard Auxiliary newsletters. If you ever have any medical questions that you would like to see addressed in the Burgee, please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to write about it. My theme for this year is HAVE FUN! Christi & John Ulrich were married 29 years ago. They met while they were both working at Union Bank in Los Angeles. Before that, they came from very different parts of the country. John was born in Oregon, but he was raised in Northern California and Oklahoma. He graduated from college in Westminster College in Missouri. Christi was born in Chicago and was raised in Beverly Hills. She graduated from UCLA and did her undergraduate work at USC. They moved to Huntington Harbour in 1985 and raised three children before moving to their beautiful SeaGate home looking down the Trinidad/Humbolt channel. Their daughters live in New York. Katy is pursuing a career in theatre and Allison, a graduate of Julliard, is a dancer. Their NEW MEMBERS son Steven, is pursuing a career in film production. Christi is a realtor with Coldwell Banker - The Smith Group and is a SeaGate specialist. John owns REIMS, Inc. and specializes in residential property management throughout Orange County. John and Christi own the Katie B, a 44 ft. Pacifica sportfisher. John takes it to Mexico every other winter. He s fished as far down as Ixtapa. His personal record is a 650 pound blue marlin caught off Cabo. John is a long time member and a past president of Harbour Rod & Reel. He likes to swim and scuba dive. They belong to the Islander Philharmonic group where Christi has served as president for two terms. She is also a member of Girls Inc., a group that helps young women with their professional careers. She likes yoga and ballet bar classes. John & Christi share their home with two miniature Dachsunds,- Daisy & Hazel. The couple express delight to be in SGYC and have already met new friends. Welcome Christi & John to SGYC when you see them. Happy New Year from SeaGate Yacht Club. Members of SGYC celebrated the arrival of 2014 with a great New Year s Eve Party. There was lots of dancing to the theme music of the 50s/60s, and Elvis arrived just in time to count down the midnight hour as we watched the Balloon Drop on TV. Everyone enjoyed creating fun memories with the special foto booth that was set up just for this occasion. There was plenty of drinks, champagne, and light catered munchies. A good time was had by ALL! We welcomed our newest member Ron Jagner with his new Burgee. Special Thanks to Rob & Cindy Allen, Bob McCormick, Jr. Staff Commodore Ray & Jan Nagele, Jr.Staff Commodore Jeff Specht, Vice Commodore Gil & Chris Morris and Joel Lander for helping to pitch in and set up all the décor and clean up the mess afterwards. Please check out all the great pictures posted on our web site that were taken by our great photographers Tom Warden and Cindy Allen. What a great way to start our 2014 line up of upcoming events. Your hosts, Kim and Josef Davydovits & Elvis
