YHA (England & Wales) Trevelyan House, Dimple Road, Matlock, Derbyshire, DE4 3YH Tel. +44(0)1629 592 700 www.yha.org.uk YHA Bath - Access Statement Introduction Located close to the historic heart of Bath, this hostel is the perfect place to stay whether you are visiting for business or for a memorable city break. The hostel is situated half a mile up a hill with a steep approach, and is a 20 minute walk from the main attractions, shops, restaurants and bars. We aim to cater for the needs of all visitors in this Grade II listed Italianate mansion. We have 69 beds in the main building which has 3 stories. A further 54 beds are located in our 1970s single storey annexe referred to as The Lodge. Unfortunately, none of our facilities are accessible to modern standards. We look forward to welcoming you. If you have any queries or require any assistance please phone 01629 592700 or email Customer Services. You can also take a virtual tour of our hostel at www.yha.org.uk/hostel/bath. Pre-Arrival The nearest rail station is Bath Spa which is 1.5 miles away. The nearest bus stop is approximately 150 metres away at the foot of the drive. There is a frequent bus service with low level access which runs to this stop. A local taxi company can provide accessible taxis when booked in advance. Please see the contact information section for more details. The hostel is half a mile from the city centre. The approach is steep, but there are pavements on either side of the road along with street lighting. The drive is 150m long and mainly has a gradient of 1:12, with a section at 1:7. www.yha.org.uk; please scroll down to the Maps and Directions section to view a map and transport options. You can contact the hostel by phone or e-mail (please see contact information). Car Parking and Arrival Unfortunately we do not have parking on site; however there is a dropping off point immediately outside the main entrance. Further parking can be found on Bathwick Hill. This is free and unrestricted. 1

The driveway leading to the hostel is approximately 100 metres long with an even, tarmac surface. Most of it is steep, but when you reach the hostel garden it is level up to the main entrance. The driveway is lit at night. Main Entrance and Reception There is level access into the hostel via manual double doors which open inwards. The reception is on the ground floor and has level access throughout with large clear spaces. The floor surface on this floor is polished stone, and the area is well-lit with wall and ceiling lamps. There is a low level service section on the reception desk. Seating can be found nearby in the lounge. The reception desk also serves as our café bar, Snacks, food and hot and cold drinks are served here between 12 noon and 11pm. Public Areas Halls and Corridors There is good colour contrast to floor, walls and doorways throughout the building. All public areas, halls, stairs and landings are well lit using a combination of ceiling and wall lights. The corridor flooring is polished stone downstairs and carpet on the upper floors. Unfortunately we do not have a lift and so access to the upper floors is by stairs only. The main staircase to the first floor is stone with a handrail on one side. To reach the tower rooms there is a steep, narrow spiral staircase. This is carpeted and has a handrail on one side. Public WCs There is a unisex WC on the ground floor opposite the self-catering kitchen. There are three steps up from the reception hall. There is non-slip flooring and fluorescent lighting. It is not accessible to modern standards. Lounge The lounge is located on the ground floor and has level access from the reception hall via a single leaf door. The room is level throughout and the floor is carpeted. The room is well-lit with wall lights and there is a lovely view out onto the garden. There are coffee tables and sofas here; all furniture can be moved; please just ask at reception if you require assistance. Dining Room The dining room is located on the ground floor and has level access from the reception hall via a single leaf door. This is a spacious, bright room. The flooring is laminate, and the room is lit with natural light and ceiling and wall lights. 2

There are tables and straight backed chairs without armrests. All furniture can be moved; please just ask at reception if you require assistance. Table service is available; please ask at reception and we will be happy to help. We are also happy to cater for dietary requirements or any particular likes or dislikes. Please advise us of these before your arrival. Self-Catering Kitchen and Dining Room The self-catering kitchen is located on the ground floor. There are three steps up from the hall leading from the reception lobby. This room includes the self-catering dining room as well. The room is level throughout and has laminate flooring. There is a worktop (height 900mm) with 2 gas hobs and a gas oven below. There is also a microwave on this worktop and a cordless kettle. The sinks are fitted with standard screw taps. Crockery and some kitchen equipment are kept in high shelving units. We would be happy to move these to lower storage if required. In the dining room there are tables and bench style seating. All furniture can be moved. Laundry and Drying Facilities The laundry room is located outside the hostel in the back courtyard. There is a level, tarmac path round the side of the hostel and then a 10cm step up into it. The flooring in the laundry room is wood and the room is well-lit. It is equipped with top loading washing machines and front loading dryers. These are coin operated. We would be happy to assist with the equipment. Bedrooms and Bathrooms All rooms without en-suite have a washbasin. Unless otherwise stated, all bedrooms have bunk beds. All bedrooms are carpeted and well-lit with ceiling lights. All bedding is provided. All of the bathrooms have fluorescent lighting and non-slip flooring. The standard showers have a step up to enter. Ground Floor From reception there are 3 steps up to a 3 person en-suite room. The room has a double bed with a single bunk over it. This is the most accessible room that we have, although it does not meet modern standards. First Floor There are 15 steps up to one 6 person en-suite room, two WCs and three showers. There are then between 6 and 11 further steps up to a range of room sizes sleeping from 2 to 10 3

people. Some of these bedrooms are en-suite and there are shared WC and shower facilties in the corridor. Second and Third Floor On each of these floors there is a twin room. The second floor also has a WC, but all other WC and shower facilities are on the first floor. The Lodge From the reception there are three steps up and then one step down into the back courtyard. The courtyard is level and surfaced with tarmac. There are then 14 more steps up to The Lodge with a handrail on one side. Once inside, The Lodge is level throughout. The floor is laminate and the corridors are well-lit. There are a range of room sizes, sleeping from 2 to 6 people. Some of these are en-suite and there are shared WC and shower facilities in the corridor. Grounds and Garden We have a large front garden which is mostly laid to lawn. It is fairly level, with steep woody banks above and below it. Picnic tables and a bench with armrests are available for guests to use. Cycle Shed The cycle store is to the rear of the building. There is a level tarmac path which leads to it around the side of the building. Additional Information We do not permit pets, but assistance dogs are very welcome. We do not permit smoking anywhere in the hostel. A member of staff is always available on site, including at night (access via emergency phone located opposite the unisex public WC). Braille signs are fitted on room doors and corridor doors. Emergency lighting and fire alarms fitted. We ensure that all guests are evacuated in the event of fire or any emergency requiring evacuation. Arrangements for guests needing assistance to evacuate in case of fire should be discussed beforehand. Evacuation procedures are displayed in each bedroom.
