THE POPPY PAPER Official Monthly Publication of the Boosters of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park A Non-Profit Organization July 2016 Stagecoach Days is one of the cornerstone annual events in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Each year the state park hosts a variety of family-oriented activities that celebrate San Diego's history and heritage. Each Saturday has a different theme that is sure to inspire and educate children of all ages. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, with the support of Boosters of Old Town and Fiesta de Reyes, is proud to offer these free activities for adults and children of all ages. July 9: Games and Amusements July 15: Women of the West July 23: Soldiers and Citizens July 30: Taste of the Past August 6: Trades that Shaped the West August 13: Days of the Vaquero August 20: Twainfest August 27: West on the Move For more information, visit www.parks.ca.gov/oldtownsandiego. So you have all this knowledge about San Diego History from 1821 to 1872, and you don t know what to do with it? Well, Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is hiring Seasonal Park Aides with experience and knowledge of San Diego history. While earning money, you will lead tours, work special events, provide guest services in the museums, and participate in living history programs. With Old Town s annual attendance of well over three million visitors, you will have the opportunity to interact with people and groups from all over the world! If interested, stop by the Robinson-Rose Visitor Center and submit an application, or you can mail an application to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, 4002 Wallace Street, San Diego, CA 92110. Applications can be found on the California State Park website at www.parks.ca.gov. Have questions, call staff at the Visitor Center, (619) 220-5422. We would love to have you join our team! Treasurer's Notes by Deanna Turton May, one of my favorite months of the year, was a really good month for BOOT, as we earned $5581.75 more than we spent! That was mostly due to two things - two generous donations from Cathy Smith from the DAR for a total of $2500.00 for special projects in the Casa de Estudillo, and great sales in the Park Store. The daily average for the donation boxes was also pretty good at $49.77, but this alone did not account for the large gain in the bottom line. Expenses over $300 were the following: $591.99 - Office Expenses (About half of this was re-licensing for the bookkeeping software.) $757.48 - Park Store (inventory) $436.72 - Craft Committee Supplies (About half of this was due to buying batting/filler for some of our most popular products. We ALWAYS buy our supplies on sale, so this figure could be a lot higher if the craft ladies were not such frugal shoppers.) $387.24 - Descendants (mailing supplies and workshop expenses) $571.05 - July 4th $413.52 - Stagecoach Days $472.34 - Burros (care and feeding) $471.00 - Period attire bank There were also nine other categories which were at $300 or less. This month, I also must thank our editor Ruth French, for I am four days late submitting this article - just because I turn into a lazy person when it gets hot. As Poppy Paper readers will recall, I am a Minnesota girl, so in hot weather I do not function very well. I am also in the process of gathering the data and copying many original receipts and bank statements so I can submit the County Grant Report next month. My goal is to get this done before our granddaughter comes for her annual summer visit. This year, she is only staying two weeks, and her goal is to learn to surf! So, time will tell if she can master the waves at eight (almost nine) years old! Bob Wohl also submitted another grant proposal to the County, so it remains to be decided if BOOT will merit another grant for events scheduled between July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017. Last year, we were given $5000.00 to enhance the July 4th and Stagecoach Days events scheduled between July 1, 2015 to June 30, 2016. In our new proposal Bob included Fiestas Patrias, so we are hoping for additional funds for that event, as well. pg. 2

The Park Store by Mary Jones A big THANKS to the park staff who work at the Visitor Center desk. They have been selling up a storm. Volunteers are always welcome to help out in the store. At this time, there are only three volunteers: JoBeth Hull, Dolly Wilson, and Mary Jones. If any of you are interest, contact me at gmajones92119@yahoo.com. This last week, we sold five of our park ranger dolls. Dolly s dolls, recipe books, badges, and tea samplers continue to be big sellers. POPPY PAPER ARTICLES NEEDED!!! Whether your information is about the Park s interpretive period (1821-1872) or some current events we NEED to hear from you. If you are an active volunteer or park staff, please send your article to: Superintendent Richard Dennison, Richard.Dennison@parks.ca.gov All others, please send your submissions directly to: poppypapereditor@gmail.com From the Editor s Desk Superintendent Richard Dennison delivering the State of the Park to annual meeting attendees. The BOOT Annual Meeting was held at Café Coyote on Saturday, June 4, 2016. The BOOT Board of Directors invited the Park Staff, BOOT members and volunteers to enjoy a delicious breakfast, while discussing our support of Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. We shared past successes, discussed new ideas, and planned for the future, all in a comfortable, casual atmosphere. Many thanks to the staff at Café Coyote for the beautiful breakfast spread, and for their ongoing commitment to provide facilities for the monthly BOOT Board Meetings. Additional thanks to BOOT President Jeanne Ferrell for networking with the Old Town community to provide fantastic raffle prizes, as well as offering her own staff from Cold Stone to organize and provide assistance at the event. The Park is gearing up for another fun-filled summer, loaded with events, kicking off with the 4 th of July and extending through every weekend through the summer months. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park is one of the few places in San Diego where you can have a free day of fun, every day of the week. So, mark your calendars with all of the events planned this summer you will surely have a great time! Happy Independence Day and Happy Reading! Ruth French, Editor poppypapereditor@gmail.com (Deadline for submissions is the 20 th of each month for inclusion in the following month s issue.) pg. 3

Sad news, Ellen Green is leaving Old Town San Diego as the Volunteer Support person. Don t worry; she is not going too far. She will be just down the street at Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO) as their Staff Coordinator. Ellen has done an amazing job as the Volunteer Support person here at Old Town this past year. She will be missed, for sure. Replacing her are Tim Downing and Michelle Magnuson. Tim and Michelle will be splitting duties between them. Both will be working during all the upcoming summer events and are very much looking forward to meeting everyone. Hello, My name is Tim Downing and I am the new volunteer coordinator for Old Town San Diego. I know I heard the sigh, Not another one. I've had many jobs over the years, from working in restaurants, hospitals, as a shooting instructor, and an aquarist (think of an aquarist as an underwater zoo keeper). Currently, I m a dog trainer a few times a week, and I work here in Old Town. I have an Associate of Arts Degree in History. I m an artist of sorts; I m a published photographer and poet. I m married and have two daughters, ages 8.5 and 3.5 years old. I have turtles, fish, lizards, and a German Shepard as pets. I have worked with volunteers with the San Diego Turtle and Tortoise Society, the Boy Scouts, multiple shooting sports events and the Senior Olympics. I would like every Volunteer in the Park (VIP) to know that I have the utmost respect and admiration for each of you. To me, it doesn't matter if you only volunteer a few hours or hundreds of hours a year. Each and everyone one of you gives Old Town San Diego State Historic Park something very precious: your free time. We are all busy these days, and sometimes finding the time to do things is elusive. But, each VIP manages to give some of that elusive time to the Park. I know it s never stated enough, but it is noticed and it is very much appreciated, more than you think. Without you, all the special events put on throughout the year would not be as great as they are. It is all of you who bring that special passion to these events through the living history and your guilds. And, I would also like to point out those VIPs who do just as much out of period attire. These are our volunteers who keep our gardens and other landscape areas beautiful. They are the volunteers who come in and do the crafts for the events, and our BOOT volunteers, who manage much of the behind the scenes necessities for Old Town. We have a great volunteer program here at Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, and I think with all your continued help, we can make this great program even better! If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. Tim Downing Senior Park Aide / Volunteer Coordinator (619) 220-5422 pg. 4
