LAKE METONGA NEWS Spring 2018 Going... going... Winter s gone! Association Update Gary Mueller WOW! What a Bluebird weekend for the opening of fishing. Unfortunately for us, Lake Metonga chose to remain ice bound until Wednesday morning. The North Boat ramp was finally ice clear at about 4 pm on Tuesday. As the ice cleared, the rain began and colder weather is promised for a few days. May 5 Lake temperatures should begin to rise after Mothers Day when higher air temperatures are promised. Peterson Bay surface temperature is 48 as of 5 pm May 9th. Your Board of Directors met last Friday and welcomed Lynn Smith to the Board, thereby filling the vacant Director seat. Thank you Lynn! Continued on page 2... May 6 Save the Date & Don t be Late! LMA Annual Meeting Saturday June 30, 2018 Crandon High School 8:00 AM Doors Open 9:00 AM Meeting May 7 It s official. The last ice left the lake on Wednesday May 9. Until about 4 pm on the 8th, the north shore boat launch was still blocked. Is this a record late date ice out? Anyone in the know? Please bring the answer to the annual meeting. Photos courtesy Andy Wienser Lake Metonga Association Crandon, Wisconsin www.lakemetongawi.org

Lake Metonga News Mueller continued... Lynn and her husband, Mike, own and operate Smith Sport and Hobby, and are long-time generous supporters of our Association. Kayla Reed, our Loon Ranger, is in the governmental administrative portion of her effort to expand the current Farmer s Bay No-Wake Zone to include the whole bay. The Town of Lincoln board is asking our association to notify the Farmer s Bay riparian property owners of this comprehensive proposal and the Town will schedule a public hearing on the matter before revising the existing no-wake ordinance. Forest County is in the process of preparing a new Mining Ordinance which must be in place by July 1, 2018. The Town of Lincoln is required to do the same if they want to be part of the program. If you are interested in this topic watch the papers for meeting dates as there seems to be one every other day. The Lake Management Plan is in the works with Onterra LLC. The LMA will need a few members to serve on Stakeholder Survey and Plan Development committees. The outline calls for about 8 hours of work over a two year period for 8 people. If you are able to help please call. Clean Boats has openings available for summer employment. This is a great way to get some fresh air while being paid to meet your Lake Metonga neighbors. (A lot of us do this every Saturday at the dump without pay!) If you or someone you know is interested, call Gary Mignon (see below for details). See you on the water, and at the annual meeting. Stay safe. Gary Still Searching for Boat Launch Inspectors We still need to fill several boat inspection positions for the north and south beach boat launches this summer. The hours are flexible, it s an easy job, and very little training is required. For more information, please contact Gary Mignon 920.422.3999 mignongary@yahoo.com Eagle Nest Update Mark Truyman There has been very little activity since early this year when they increased the nest about 20%. Now that the lake is open and more food is available, we re hoping they ll return. We ll just have to wait and see... Lake Metonga Association Membership Mark Truyman and Julie Janquart Now that the ice is off the lake, and property owners are coming back to open up cottages, put in docks, take care of lawn work, etc., it s also a good time, if you haven t already, to renew your lake association membership. Keep in mind, membership is not only open to riparian owners, but also to any property owner within one mile of Lake Metonga. Currently, only 30% of all riparian owners are members of the Association. Do you think we can ever reach100%? Why not? Boosting our membership promotes lake quality and maintains property values for everyone. Please use the membership form in this newsletter and mail it in, or better yet, bring it with you to the annual meeting on June 30th, where you can learn about the lake and meet your neighbors. If you ve already renewed your membership for the year, please recruit a neighbor. Thanks for your support! PLEASE NOTE! If you are not an active member in the lake association, this will be your last complementary issue of the newsletter. Please renew and continue your membership! www.lakemetongawi.org 2

Spring 2018 Lake Metonga News LoonWatch Report Kayla Reed Local Anglers Make the Cover Spring is here and hopefully we ll have one or more loon families on the lake. When boating, skiing and jet skiing, please take extra precaution in the areas where loons are taking care of their offspring. While adult loons all around the lake can easily keep a safe distance from speeding boats, baby and infant loons and their protective parents cannot. Loon territories to be most cautious include Farmers Bay to South Beach, and the Peterson Bay area. If you have any questions, concerns or reports, please feel free to email me at: jomaemae.reed@gmail.com Their catch might not be a trophy, but the photo sure is! Sam and Kevin Houle s sons Hudson and Wyatt landed a perch last summer and the cover of the Forest County Chamber of Commerce 2018 Visitor s Guide at the same time.
