About the Road Book The road book contains for each travel day a day plan/time schedule services along the route description of highlights one or more maps, including links to the online maps driving directions a selection of attractions /activities, including contact details for outfitters links to relevant BC parks & Parks Canada brochures and maps additional information Print the road book, and/or use it on your mobile device. The latter allows you to open added links and interactive maps. Cellphone reach and internet Although the majority of accommodations offer WIFI, cell phone coverage is poor along the route. I recommend taking a paper copy of your road book along. Check each night, next day s programme. Regarding the proposed time schedules Be aware that the times mentioned in the proposed time schedules, sometimes include stops, while on other days net times are mentioned. I chose to do so because some days have optional activities that vary in duration. On those days, I mention net times. At days on which you follow the schedule without optional activities, I can pretty much estimate the time you ll need and therefore, times mentioned include sightseeing stops. About the route The designed route is the most scenic and interesting route from Vancouver to Calgary. If I d be in the position to join you on your trip, I would guide you exactly the same way as presented in this itinerary. About the sights It has not been my intention to include every single activity along the route. Presented sights are carefully selected, based upon quality and feasibility within the proposed day schedule. PREVIEW by Tourguide Canada 2017 Page 4

The Highlights Bow Valley Parkway- Hwy 1a This route is an alternative for, and runs parallel with, Hwy 1 between Lake Louise and Banff. The speed limit on Hwy 1a is 60 km/35 mile per hour. The easy pace increases your chances of spotting wildlife. In contrast to Hwy 1, it is allowed to pull over to the side of the road as long as you don t impede other road users. If you're eager to spot some wildlife, drive the Bow valley Parkway (Hwy 1a) early morning; the earlier the better your chances. When lucky you might spot some elk, bear, osprey, bighorn sheep or even wolf. Please read the additional information at page 81. You need a valid park pass to drive the Bow Valley parkway. Free admission in 2017 Parks Canada is inviting Canadians and visitors from around the world to celebrate Canada s 150th anniversary. To mark this special year, Parks Canada is offering free admission to all Parks Canada locations! The park pass is available in-person at Parks Canada's park gates and information centres Lake Minnewanka Scenic Drive This 13 km/ 8 mi scenic loop through the Bow Valley a wildlife corridor-, offers some impressive views of several picturesque lakes and mountain peaks. Keep your eyes open for Bighorn sheep! Lake Minnewanka Lake Minnewanka means water of the spirits as the native people of the area the Stoneys- heard voices whenever they travelled in the neighbourhood of the lake. Although they couldn t see anything that made sounds, one day a strange creature rise out of the water. It was half fish and half human being... Two Jack Lake Two Jack Lake is my favourite spot for a picnic. On a sunny day you ll have a spectacular view of massive Mount Rundle. Two Jack Lake PREVIEW by Tourguide Canada 2017 Page 7

Hoodoos viewpoint Hoodoos are pillars formed by erosion. They consist of sedimentary sandstone rock. Wind and water erosion shape these structures. Softer parts crumble down and harder parts stay behind like pillars. From the Hoodoo viewpoint, you have a splendid view of the Bow River and Mount Rundle (2,948 m/ 9,672 ft). In the distance, the Gondola and the Banff Spring Hotel are visible. Surprise Corner Go up the stairs for a splendid view of the Banff Spring Hotel. Read about the history of the Banff Springs Hotel http://www.fairmont.com/banffsprings/promotions/hotelhistory/ Banff Gondola Make sure to ride the Gondola on a clear or lightly clouded day! The fully enclosed 4-passenger cabin lifts you to an incredible view at the summit of Mount Sulphur (2,281 m./ 7,486 ft). On a bright day, you ll have a superb 360 view of 6 mountain ranges. It is a great way to say bye to the Rockies. On top is a 1 km/ 0.6 mi interpretive walk to a National Historic Site. Many of chipmunks accompany you Web: http://www.brewster.ca/rocky-mountains/destinations/banff/activities/banffgondola/#/0 Banff Upper Hot Springs Commercially developed hot springs in a breathtaking setting. From the pool, you have an amazing view of Mount Rundle. The temperature in this outdoor hot pool is set to 37-40 C / 98-104 F. Rental swimsuits and towels available. Web: http://www.hotsprings.ca/banff-upper-hot-springs Bow Falls A lovely viewpoint of the 9 m./30 ft. high, 30 m./100 ft wide, Bow falls. The Fairmont Banff Spring Hotel is located 2 minutes down the road. Bow Falls PREVIEW by Tourguide Canada 2017 Page 8

Fenland Loop A beautiful, diverse, short hike (more like a stroll) to get introduced to the Bow Valley wildlife corridor http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/pn-np/ab/banff/activ/randonee-hiking/banff.aspx#fenland Cave and Basin... like some fantastic dream from a tale of the Arabian Nights. That is how William McCardell described the mist-filled cave on the slopes of Sulphur Mountain in Banff when he, his brother Tom, and their partner Frank McCabe first saw it in the fall of 1883. Considering the archaeological evidence of human habitation in the Bow Valley that dates back 10,000 years, and First Nations stories about the cave and warm waters, we know that these Canadian Pacific Railway workers were not the first to discover these springs. However, recognizing the potential profit flowing in these mineral waters, the railway workers erected a fence around their discovery and built a log cabin near the entrance to the cave. They unwittingly created the first crude boundary around what would eventually become Canada s first national park. Web: http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/lhn-nhs/ab/caveandbasin/index.aspx Banff Park Museum National Historic Site The Banff Park Museum displays an extensive collection of natural history specimens (more than 5,000) which are characteristic of early museum practices. The emphasis is on changes in attitudes toward natural resource management. Web: http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/lhn-nhs/ab/banff/index.aspx PREVIEW by Tourguide Canada 2017 Page 9

Map 10.3 Banff town side link will be provided to the online map will be included Additional Information If you like to increase your chances to spot wildlife, I suggest driving the Bow Valley Parkway early morning. The Bow Valley is an important wildlife corridor as most food sources are available on the valley floors. The earlier you leave, the better your chances. Nevertheless, I ve also seen wildlife around 9-10 am. Realize seeing wildlife is never guaranteed. If you ve already seen lots of animals, consider leaving a bit later and to drive the main Hwy 1 / Trans Canada Hwy-East. It will then take you only 30 min. to reach Banff. Taxes explained Marked prices are always net, excluding Federal and Provincial taxes in Canada and not what you will end up paying. Federal and provincial sales taxes are added at the till. How much tax you pay depends on the province and the product or service you buy. Federal tax: GST Goods and Services Tax Both British Columbia as Alberta charge 5% GST on goods and services. This includes hotel and restaurant bills. Exceptions are basic essentials such as groceries, medical and dental services, and financial services. GST does not apply when non-resident consumers purchase goods in Canada and when these goods are shipped directly by the Canadian supplier to the non-resident's residence. (The shipping charges are also exempt from GST.) Foreign visitors can not rebate GST on goods and services. Provincial tax: PST Provincial Sales Tax British Columbia charges 7% PST. Alberta does not charge PST. PST also applies to most goods and services, including accommodation and restaurant bills. Taxes on lodging in Canada Accommodations to which taxes apply vary per province, region, and municipality. Municipal and Regional District Tax Municipal and Regional District Tax (MRDT) is a local tax collected by the municipal, regional or provincial governments. It is a required payment as are all taxes in Canada. The revenue is utilized to promote or support local (mostly tourism) destinations. Destination Marketing Fee Destination Marketing Fee (DMF) on the other hand is simply individual businesses deciding to contribute funds to a joint marketing program. It is a business to business contractual arrangement. Excise taxes in Canada Both the federal and provincial governments impose excise taxes on goods such as cigarettes and alcohol. Canada has some of the highest rates of taxes on cigarettes and alcohol in the world. It is generally accepted that higher prices discourage consumption of these items which have been known to increase health care costs. This way the user indirectly pays extra for health care.
