Historically vendors have found that the single story layout plus the well-located loading dock make moving in and out simple and quick. The adjoining Oceanview Room is everpopular with its floor-to-ceiling windows and grand views. Preserving the Past The Jekyll Island Museum created its Historic Preservation Department in 1986. In the 20 years of its existence, 29 of the island s 33 historic structures have been restored. Notable recent projects include the Horton House Restoration, a Save America s Treasures project, and the restoration of the Mainland Armstrong stained glass window located above the altar in Faith Chapel. Current efforts focus on the ongoing preservation of Hollybourne Cottage, the stabilization of the Jekyll Island Wharf Pavilion, and an adaptive reuse project to turn the 1903 Power Plant into the home of the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. Maintenance in the historic district is continual, and visitors can often see staff repairing shutters, restoring porches, or painting cottages. The Jekyll Island Museum began actively managing the archaeological resources of the island in the 1970s. Since that time, the museum has conducted archaeological surveys, site testing, and research projects on Jekyll Island s historic and prehistoric resources. Projects have particularly focused on the Horton House Historic Site, Jekyll Island Club Service Buildings, and the Pulitzer Cottage porte-cochere. Continuing archaeological research is planned and will focus on the Horton House Historic Site as well as the Pulitzer Cottage Site.
Things to Do, Places to See Georgia s smallest barrier island at 5,700 acres, Jekyll Island offers a unique combination of rich history, unspoiled natural beauty and an impressive array of sports and recreational activities and amenities for such a small package. Beaches Jekyll Island s 10 miles of unspoiled beaches are perfect for sunbathing or swimming, for leisurely walks or invigorating jogs. Perhaps best known for their natural bounty, Jekyll Island s beaches offer serenity for guests young and old. Many live creatures abound as well, including hermit crabs and sand dollars. Boating and Fishing Jekyll Island s protected natural beauty is meant to be explored. This fact especially holds true for the Island s salt marshes, estuarial waters or the deep blue sea. One of the best ways to experience this intriguing ecosystem is by strapping on a life jacket, grabbing a paddle and taking a kayak or canoe out into the inland waterways. Or, use the experience of any of the area s charter boat captains and fish for an abundance of different types. Nature Walks Jekyll Island s abundance of unspoiled natural beauty from its richly preserved maritime forests to its pristine dune systems to its 10 miles of tidal beaches is perhaps best appreciated with the assistance and guidance of experienced Jekyll Island staff and volunteers. Today, Jekyll Island boasts 63 holes of golf on three 18-hole courses and one 9-hole course, earning Jekyll Island the bragging rights as Georgia s largest public golf resort.
