Club members have participated in a number of shows. Several members won awards and our club won the Club Participation Award at the Townsmen Show in Loomis on May 17 th. On the 22 nd of May a number of our members made the trip to Rock Creek Care Center in Auburn. This was the first of several trips we will make to Senior Living Centers. It s fun to hear the residents talk about things our cars remind them of, and the Care Centers staff feed us well in appreciation for our visit. By the time you read this, the Thunder Valley Car Show and the Downtown Lincoln Car Show are over. Rich Ragan had been working with Thunder Valley Casino Staff to ensure that things went smoothly on Friday evening. Our Downtown show was a good one. We had our Award Sponsors lined up, awards, dash plaques, and T-shirts had been ordered. The three celebrity judges, Senator Ted Gaines; Gabriel Hydrick, Lincoln s Mayor; and Police Chief Rex Marks each picked their favorite car at our show. We had 70 awards that were given out to our judges top picks. We had stuffed 200 goody bags at our May General Business Meeting. We had many great raffle prizes. Our pre-registration was down a little from last year, however, we had about the same number of participants as previous years. There is nothing on the legislative front that endangers the car hobby at this time, but there are several bills that, if passed, will hit us in the pocketbook. While these fee increases may not be big amounts in themselves they are on top of already high registration fees and they apply to each and every car you own. ACCC is asking for your help in communicating with your state legislators and letting them know we oppose these bills. In my opinion SB1077 is the most onerous. It would establish a pilot program to tax us based on the miles we drive each of our cars. The idea is that this would replace the current gas tax. Can you tell me when was the last time a tax was repealed? If this passes it will probably be just another tax we will have to pay. See accc.defender.org for more information. EAGLES NEST CAR SHOW Page 2 Hi everyone, it sure is fun to head out of town with your classic car on a new adventure. We had two groups heading out of Dodge, so to speak. Actually, it was Rocklin on Friday, May 30th, when the early group, led by Tom McPhail, dropped by the little cool town of Volcano for lunch. The rest of us left around 12:30PM and headed up to Jackson. On a rod run, it's great if the weather is not too hot, especially if you do not have AC. We took a casual drive over to Sloughhouse. Where is that you ask? Somewhere on the Jackson Highway. We stopped to stretch, some filled up with gas and then we were on our way or that's what we thought. Mangini's Plymouth lost fire about two miles from the gas station so we pulled over, huddled up, and checked his car. It was surmised that his car was not getting fuel. We arranged a Triple AAA tow to Jackson. Carl and his 40 Ford stayed with Al. Sheila rode with the Righetti s in their Mercury. The rest of us arrived on schedule, we checked in and hunkered down for awhile. Tom's group was all ready there, we all hooked up later for dinner. After awhile, Al Mangini and Carl showed up. His Plymouth was at a local shop being worked on. It turns out, we are not very good mechanics under pressure, because the only thing wrong with Al's Plymouth was the coil wire. OH, BOY! We had 26 people for dinner at Jose's Mexican Restaurant: the food was great. We planned on getting up early for the show the next day due to the expected turn out. That was a good idea! We left the hotel at 6:00AM and headed over to Ione and on to the Eagles Nest Airport. A great little drive over in our cars. What a unique setting for a show: only two roads in or out of the Airport. Approximately 300 cars were lined up on each side of the road, meaning if we did not get there early, we would have been far away from the show. They had a lot of old cool airplanes, three dragsters that fired up later and, of course, a lot of classic cars. There was a pancake breakfast and tri tip sandwiches to be purchased for lunch. They put on an air show at 1:00PM, two old C-3's did several fly-by's. Very cool! You had to either stay late until the very end or leave early. The way the cars were parked, it was going to take a long time to leave the show when it was over. Most of us left early. Ray Geiger and the McVey's stayed until the end. All in all a great time, only one minor break down, and a good overnight stay out in the Gold Country.

This one just a short drive to Fair Oaks for the annual Fiesta Days Show and Shine Car Show. Ray (A.J. Foyt) Geiger was again the point person and word was out to meet up at the Sonic Drive-In and leave there promptly at 6:30 AM. As I was pulling into the Sonic at 6:30 on the dot, Ray (AJ) was pulling out with Mike Roby behind him and Richard Reidburn behind Mike. I hit the gas pedal and was able to catch up and fall behind Rich. The rest of the way to Fair Oaks it looked Mike was having a terrible time trying to keep up with A.J. as he hit every light green. I think he has a remote that he clicks and the lights turn green, because we never stopped. We finally arrived at our destination at 6:45 AM, a 30 minute drive that we did in 15 minutes. You would think that 6:45 AM would be early enough to get to a Car Show and get a good parking spot. Not today: the place was just about full and we were led down to the end of the street. Ray commented that we would either have to leave earlier or drive faster next year. He has to be kidding. Faster than what, I thought. Turned out to be a good day. The weather was really nice and there must have been close to 300 cars. I saw Dave Widmer, Don Loftin, and Tom McPhail there from our club. Don and his GTO won an award but again the Judges missed Ray s and my car. Don t know what they were thinking. How could we miss two weeks in a row not getting an award, must have been the parking spots. There was a big variety of vendors and many food trucks. The downtown was all open, even though it was Sunday. They had a 5 K Fiesta Fun Run on Sunday and lots more going on the day before. There was a bike race too. The bikers look great in their get ups on their bikes but when they get off their bikes, I don t think so. This is a good show and it s close to home. We need to put Don Loftin and his award on our calendar again for next year and let s get more cars out for it. Ed McVey Trivia Question for June Where was the first stolen car reported? WOODY S CLASSIC CARS and BURGERS CAR SHOW Well, the Burgers were good, weather a little iffy and not as many cars as I thought. That kind of sums up the car show at Woody's on Tues., May 20th. Seven of our cars made it over to the event. It was kind of planned at the last moment, probably not enough time to promote it effectively. Overall, about 20 cars were there, give or take a few. WINNERS AT RIO LINDA P A G E 4 Woody's could have marked off a selected area for the cars and possibly should have had a DJ to try to involve the attendees in a trivia game or make more like a car show instead of just a place to eat. I think they would like to do this more often. We will see what takes place in the future. The main thing is, it's a another good destination and eating place to take our cars to. Isn't it all about driving our cars? Tom McPhail took home the Butch Gardner Memorial Award THUNDER IN THE PARK Four club members met in the Waffle Farm parking lot at 6:30 Saturday, May 24 and cruised down Fiddyment to the CVS on the corner of Pleasant Grove where we met several other members and friends for the drive to Rio Linda for the Thunderbolts Thunder in Depot Park. Upon our arrival we met up with Alan Taylor and two of his friends who had arrived just ahead of us. After parking and setting up our EZ-UP a few of us went across the street for a great $3.99 breakfast. As usual the Thunder Bolts put on a good show. While the sun was hot, in the shade of the EZ-UP or under the near by shade trees, it was a very pleasant day. After checking out all the cars, there was plenty of time to enjoy some good conversation with old and new friends. When the 2 o clock award time came, two of our members were presented with awards. George Funk was a winner and Tom McPhail was awarded the Butch Gardner Memorial Award. Ray Geiger George Funk took home an Award for one of the Top Twenty Cars OROVILLE The Oro Dam Cruisers of Oroville, CA have 265 members and put on one terrific car show. George Funk led our group on a beautiful early morning drive to show our cars. Don Loftin and Karen s brother completed the group. Lots of beautiful cars, many activities and enough vendors to please everyone. It was a really nice day. Everyone seemed to want to discuss Don s car with the For Sale sign. P A G E 5 PRESIDENT RAY GEIGER Ray called the formal General Meeting to order at 6:30 PM and then welcomed everyone to the meeting. Gene Record has a serious health condition and would appreciate calls and visitors. SECRETARY S REPORT ED BRANCO Ed asked if everyone read and reviewed the April General Meeting Minutes. Ed McVey moved to approve and Denis Malone seconded. Secretary s Report was approved. TREASURER S REPORT CRAIG KIRKPATRICK Craig reported the month and year to date activity and balances for both the Club and Car Show accounts. We have $1,152 in Club Merchandise. Contributions total $500 for the year and $78,973 to date. It was suggested that 10 Plaques be ordered to maintain inventory Gary McCoig has a tee shirt stamping machine that we may use next year Rich Ragan moved to approve the Treasurer s Report and Julie McVey seconded. Alan suggested we applaud Ray Geiger and Kent Parsell for their many years of hard work. Loud applause followed. Dennis Malone described Al Alves unique approach to collecting sponsors checks. Dan Larsen reported on his updated new apparel color. Ray asked for a motion to adjourn. Ralph Garcia so moved and Ed McVey seconded. Meeting adjourned at 7:40 PM. Stuffing goody bags began. P A G E 6 TOWNSMEN CAR CLUB ANNUAL SHOW The Townsmen Car Club changed the location of its 11th Annual Car Show to Loomis near the Train Station and Taylors BBQ and it really worked well. Every space available was filled with a beautiful car or truck. Their raffle had so many really neat items. It was the first time I saw a beautiful bike offered in a raffle. Their Poker Walk had folks scattering all over town looking for the designated businesses from which to draw cards for cash awards: the highest hand and lowest hand. The Club presented their awards in beautiful frames: a new nice touch. The venue of the Train Station was very nice and a couple of trains roared through which, of course, the kids just loved. Great Show!! Fred Krohn s beautiful red 1939 Ford was one of the Top Twenty Awards. President Ray Geiger accepted the Club Participation Award. There were a bunch of the Rods & Relics members out on such a beautiful day enjoying a great show. Ron Ratto from Reno, NV entered this beauty in the show and ended up taking home the Best in Show Award. It is truly a First Class ride! See that big smile on my face? I am a happy camper whenever I am around our Club members & their cars. This picture was taken at the May meeting. President Ray Geiger presented me with an award for Outstanding Service As Secretary, temporary Treasurer, Vice President and President from 2006 2014 and a gift certificate from Sun City for whatever. I was totally surprised! It has been an honor for me to be on the Board of Directors for the last 8 years. I enjoy all the activities we are involved in and try to take part in them as well. Thank you for letting me stay so long. Your editor, Julie McVey J U N E N E W S L E T T E R MID-WEEK CAR SHOWS There are so many Car Shows every weekend and almost every night of the week at businesses that hope you will bring your car too. Most offer food discounts as an enticement which is also nice. It is nice to get out in mid-week. Even the kids love to see the cars, especially the brightly colored ones! With the hot summer weather we have been having it is nice to be welcomed into a cool restaurant and support our local businesses at the same time. The dates are all listed and updated on the website to help you plan your week: look under Recurring Events. I am looking forward to seeing many more cars at Strikes as they are trying very hard to meet all the criteria we have been wanting for their bi-weekly show. Last week was really neat. In St. Louis, back in 1905 the first car was reported stolen. Every year more than 1.1 million vehicles are stolen. Using the FBI s average valuation of $6,505 per stolen vehicle, the 794,616 vehicles stolen during 2009 caused estimated property losses of $5.2 billion. Only 12.4 percent of thefts were cleared, either by arrests or by exceptional means, in 2009 (Insurance information Institute). According to the FBI, a motor vehicle is stolen in the United States every 40 seconds. The only good point in cars being stolen is that it doesn t happen as often in smaller communities.
