Director Comments September 2017 Lilac City Riders, Chapter "G" Goldwing Touring Association Spokane, WA 99212 August 2017 Newsletter Upcoming Event September 2017 1-4 Labor Day Campout 9 Officers Meeting 22 Valley Fest Parade 23 Progressive Dinner August 26 September Meeting due to Labor Day Campout September Birthdays 1 Bob Moran 9 Sheri Williams 11 Lyle Polack 26 Helen Morgan 27 Joann Moran September Anniversaries 12 Ernie & Cookie Yocom 21 Dan & Grace Cash We had some hot days. I used my cool vests for the first time since I was riding in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. It saved my bacon on a couple of the hotter days. Thankfully the temperatures have dropped enough to have some great riding conditions. I hope it stays this way. There have been two motorcycle deer accidents this year; one with no injuries just frontend damage. The other accident was much more severe with substantial injuries for the riders and a totaled motorcycle. Barry and Sonya have always used protective gear when riding. Their preparedness saved then from more serious injuries. We are so exposed when we are on a motorcycle. We try to watch for animals and drivers that just cannot see us. Wearing the proper gear at all times may just save us from a trip to the hospital or worse. Sometimes with all the care we take accidents are still going to happen. I know the heat it is harder to use the protective gear. We just procrastinate saying its not going to happen to me. I ll get away with it this one time then, then it becomes easier and easier to forget about the proper gear. We have all seen the riders out and about with shorts, tank tops, and only a helmet because it is the law in Washington. Hoping they never go down. I for one am very grateful for our safety officer and with his tips tie after time for our benefit. The after meeting ride led by Charlie was absolutely fantastic. Those of us who were lucky enough to make the ride had a wonderful time. Just a reminder that the September meeting is August 26 th, same place same time. We will be camping on our regular meeting day. I hope the rest of the riding season is uneventful and pleasant for all of us. Denni

Minutes August 5 th, 2017 The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance. Today the guests are Carter and Evan. Carol and Joe s grandchildren. The July minutes were approved. The Treasurer s report is submitted via e-mail. Safety: The weather is a huge factor. Even though you feel you will be ok do not wear shorts, tank tops and flip-flops. Barry and Sonya were wearing protective gear when the deer hit them. They had their jackets, helmets, gloves and boots on at the time. Terry Burns joked be careful when your spouse calls you dear. What the spouse may in fact be saying is DEER. Charlie wants to give the Crash Trophy to Barry. The Glacier Park trip was wonderful. We went the backway to Orofino. Spent the night at Lolo Hot Springs. No cell service, no TV. They had a phone booth to make calls. The restaurant was under staffed and the food was not so good. The second day we were in Missoula. From there we went north to Browning. Dinner was another experience. The next day was beautiful in the park. The restaurant in White Fish made up or the 1 st two days. A good wonderful ride. The dinner ride to Priest Lake was hot, so we drove our cars except Ernie and Cookie who were brave souls to ride their trike in the heat. Dinner was great, good food and good service. Karen out did herself with all the wonderful desserts. On August 19 is the scavenger hunt and BBQ. Cheri Loveland will head the hunt and Margie Richards will do the BBQ. The SEPTEMBER meeting is on AUGUST 26 due to the Labor Day Weekend Campout. The Officers meeting is September 9 th. Valley Fest Parade is coming up September 22nd. Talk to Michael Mustered if you want and will do the parade for sure. The Progressive Dinner is September 23 rd. Breakfast at the Stevens. Peggy Burns to do the lunch part, Carol Henscheid dinner, and Antoinette will do dessert. October 7-8 th will be the hot springs trip. We will spend the night and then come home. October 14 is the planning and business meeting held at the Otis Orchards Church. This is a dessert only potluck. The 28 th of October is the Halloween Party also at the church. This will be a potluck dinner with games. Bob Watson won the free breakfast. Kathy Jones and Sheri Boorman were the names pulled for the colors drawing. They did not attend the meeting. 50/50 game collected $94.00. The club received $47.00 and the two winners got $23.50 each. The winners are Peggy Burns and Joe Henscheid. For the Christmas party, it was suggested that we all wear an ugly sweater. We will discuss that at a later time. These are the notes as I have recorded them. Sincerely, Patricia Stevens, Secretary Third Annual Motorcycle Trip, destination Glacier Park On Thursday, July 20 th, Joe & Carol, Dennis & Dorothy, Dan & Grace, Jack & Cheri, Charlie & Antoinette, and Jerry & Sheri left Spokane headed towards Glacier National Park. This was the third annual trip planned, organized, and led by Joe. Our Destination the first day was Lolo Hot Springs. We took the scenic route through Plummer, St Maries, Deary, Ahsahka and Orofino. Lunch was at a great restaurant in Orofino overlooking the beautiful Clearwater River. The through Kooskia and up Lolo Pass to the Hot Springs. After a questionable dinner at the only restaurant

available in the area, several of us took advantage of the hot pools. Accommodations here were a bit sketchy half of the group had a nice, newly renovated rooms; the rest of us had old, tired rooms. The second day we headed toward Missoula where Jerry & Sheri left the group to return to Spokane for a family wedding. The rest of us continued on through Lincoln (where we saw several large forest fires and a large camp of firefighters) and Choteau (a great ice cream stop) to Browning where we spent our second night. Another night of questionable accommodations (the hotel had misplaced a couple of reservations) but an adequate dinner at the casino. Breakfast on the third day was at East Glacier (excellent huckleberry pie). From there we took the Going to the Sun highway through Glacier National Park. This park is magnificent; something that everyone should experience and well worth the drive to get there. Those who could find parking spent quite a lot of time at the visitor center at the top just enjoying the view. After getting through the park, we continued to Whitefish where we spent our third night. We got to our hotel early enough to enjoy a game of cards before dinner. This hotel actually catered to motorcycle riders and was quite nice. The last day of the trip was pretty much a straight shot back to Spokane. After lunch at the Snake Pit in Kingston, ID, everyone made their own way home. Our sincere thank you to Joe for all the time and effort he spent making this an amazing adventure for those of us lucky enough to make the trip.

very good trip for all of us. He deserves BIG KUDOS and a well deserved thank you. Rest stop after meeting ride After meeting ride 08/05/2017 By Dennis McDaniel Eleven members plus 2 member s grandchildren made the after meeting ride August 5 th. Charlie and Antoinette led us to the market so members that did not pack a lunch would be able to get some food for our picnic. Then off on our way to Hunters WA, by way of back roads that seemed almost deserted for a Saturday. Outside of the smoke from the fires up north it was a very good ride. Maybe the temperature and smoke kept more riders at home. Terry and I both made note that at one point we were on a road which neither one of us had been on before this ride. When we arrived at the park we were able to put a couple of tables together so we could all eat and chat with one another. Lots of people and kids were enjoying the park. After lunch Charlie started us back to Spokane via Springdale, Loon Lake and Clayton for our mandatory ice cream stop. We split up in Clayton, one group continuing south on 395 and the other led by Dennis decided to head east to highway 2 then south to Spokane. We cut over to Hwy 2 via Deer Park. Then Straight home for the group in the Valley from there. Charlie planned a Dinner in Priest River Dessert at the Nelsons
