August 3, 2017 Chestua Baptist Benefit & Love Auction All proceeds will go to help with medical bills and expenses for Michelle Self and Regina Jenkins. Saturday August 5, 2017 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. NATIONWIDE President Donald Trump joined Georgia Senator David Perdue and Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton on Wednesday, championing legislation to overhaul legal immigration to America and calling for a merit-based system that would significantly cut admissions over the next decade. Trump said the plan would protect U.S. workers and taxpayers, Perdue and Cotton adding such legislation would reduce the number of green cards issued annually from one million to 500,000. Earlier on Tuesday, the three argued that lowskilled and unskilled immigration had depressed wages and the new system would favor immigrants who were educated, spoke English, and had high-paying job offers. Trump said new immigrants had to be financially able to support themselves and their families. Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee crowed big numbers on Wednesday, announcing the party brought in over $75 million in the first six months of the Trump presidency, which was double the amount the Democrats raised during Barack Obama s initial half year. Committee officials said the numbers Fishers of Men Crucified Mary Hall Keys for Christ w/ Wanda Keys CBYG Praise Choir Monica McLemore & Mary Grace Trotter great food silent auction cornhole horseshoes manicures dunk booth bake sale activities for kids of all ages 790 Chestua Church Road Madisonville were due to Trump s appeal with his base, including small donors. The Dow cut through the 22,000 mark briefly in early trading on Wednesday, boosted by Apple s spike of over six percent to a record high, before stocks retreated sharply across sectors as investors Page 3 - The BUZZ Back To School Beauty Bash! Kids Cuts $5 OPEN TUESDAY - FRIDAY 423-351-0071 409 Sweetwater/Vonore Rd Sweetwater locked in gains. Wall Street said the S&P 500 was up 22 percent year to date, contrasting with Microsoft and Facebook, which were described as top drags. Looking for a job? Amazon held a giant job fair on Wednesday, announcing plans to make thousands of job offers on the spot at a dozen of its U.S. warehouses with 40,000 to 50,000 new hires in packing, sorting, and shipping and almost all full time. The numbers came following Amazon s earlier plans to add 100,000 full-time workers by the middle of 2018. In sports, Ara Parseghian, the coach who took over a floundering Notre Dame football program and restored it to glory and won two national championships in 11 seasons, died at his home in South Bend, Indiana, early Wednesday, passing away at age 94. Parseghian and the Irish won titles in 1963 and 1973 and then he abruptly retired in 1974 at age 51 with a 95-17-4 record, saying he was worn out and ready for a change. And with the August 21 total solar eclipse looming in three weeks, Space.com said on Wednesday you better catch it while you can because these celestial events won t keep happening forever. It s due to the moon moving away from the earth at an inch-and-ahalf per year, resulting in no more eclipses around 600 million years from now. (But for now, a total solar eclipse will take place somewhere on the planet s surface once every 18 months.) Vonore (Continued from pg 1) And if you are in need of eclipse glasses (to help protect those peepers during the partial eclipse leading up to and following totality), look no further. The Vonore Historical Museum is selling eclipse glasses for $2 a pair. The museum is located next door to Vonore City Hall. Citizens need not fear, Tuesday, August 1 through Friday, August 4 either, about the potential tidal wave of guests. All of Vonore s dedicated police officers will be on duty that day, assisting with traffic control. Vonore promises to be a great place to witness the total solar eclipse. So if you are in search of a place to hang during the event, be sure to consider the Town of Vonore! * This information was provided by City Recorder Courtney Dalton-Viar. Russell (Continued from pg 1) Charged on Saturday by Sweetwater Police Sergeant John Brewster with shoplifting was Joshua Russell, 20, of Campground Road, Madisonville. Brewster said he was dispatched to Dollar General on Highway 68. Dispatchers said he would be looking for a white male in back shorts carrying concealed items in a black shirt. Brewster said he found the male at EZ Rentals and spotted two 25-ounce Natural Light beers in the shirt. Back at Dollar General he was identified as Russell. The feat set Russell on a course to the police department and a visit to the county jail. Monroe County Outdoor Report Dwain Mercer If you are looking for something to do this weekend, try the Chilhowee Sportsman s Club. The Helen Ross McNabb sporting Clay Tournament is Friday and Saturday. There will be around 400 shooters in four-person teams competing for first place and enjoying a great lunch. It will be loads of fun. It will be great practice for the less-than-amonth-away dove season. If you want to improve your dove-to-shell ratio, get some practice in Chilhowee or Benton sporting clays. The practice will definitely pay off. Lots of practice and maybe your hunting pards will be bragging on your shooting, instead of giving you a hard time over all those doves that usually get by you. Remember that besides needing your regular hunting and fishing license, you must have a migratory bird permit to hunt doves or other migratory birds. It is also a good time to start stocking up on shotgun shells. Make sure you only shoot those shot shells that match the gauge of your shotgun. A 20-gauge shot shell will slide right down the barrel of a 12-gauge. Fire a 12- gauge with a 20-gauge already in the barrel and we will be calling you single wing. That is if you are lucky. Don t mix shells for anything. Play it safe and smart. Did anyone hear about the world record crappie caught in a farm pond in Arkansas? I still don t believe it, but it was reported to weigh 12 pounds and six ounces. That is one big slab that darn well will near feed a family of four. Like to see that size in our lakes. The angler caught it on a baby duck lure. Yep, there is such a thing. Dick s Sporting Goods in Maryville has a whole bunch of different colored ones. I would bet a bass, walleye, musky, or striper would bite one. Had a bass spit up a big rat in the live well once and no, it wasn t pleasant cleaning up that mess. In the McKee Outdoor Monday Nighter, Jimmy and Gary Hicks came in first with 7.40 pounds. Jeff Wright was second with 7.20 pounds and Shannon and Scott took third with 6.46 pounds. Clint and Jake were fourth with 6.03 pounds. Jimmy Hicks got lunker with a 4.06- pounder. The Friday Night Toqua Tournament was cancelled because of bad weather. It was a good year in every department, said General Manager Eric Hicks. We are fortunate to be in the black. Hicks reported that revenue for the electric department increased in June by 17 percent. Nothing extraordinary happened in natural gas, he said, noting revenue was down three percent. Water and sewer revenue rose seven percent. In his last action as chairman, Phil Hall opened the meeting with prayer. Former chairman Junior Moree moved to officially install Dick Collette as the new chair for 2017-18 and board members approved. Moree was named vice chairman, Hall past chairman, and Billy Wayne Stockton secretary. In June, garbage collection fees came to $16,776, Hicks said, adding SUB would pay the city $20,000 to cover damage for road cuts that took place during collections. Board members learned that ten to 15 bad poles were changed in June. New apartments under construction behind Plaza 68 would require installation of lines. A problem developed when a pole was installed at the Head of the Creek bridge but the issue was resolved. A new water line at Bilderback Heights was moving right along, Hicks said. The natural gas line from Christianburg Volunteer Fire Department to Taco Bell was complete. We saved a ton of money using our own employees, Moree said. The designing and permitting for a gas line from I-75 to Schott Gemtron was complete and all that was needed was an interested customer. Hicks said that by next month, hopefully, bids for the new SUB building at Highway 322 and Industrial Park Road would be submitted. Interest for a USDA grant for the project should be locked in at 2.5 or 2.7 percent, which was not bad, he said. The board set a joint meeting with the mayor and aldermen for 6 p.m. on September 14 at Springbrook Country Club in Niota. Several minutes of discussion was devoted to the employee pension plan, of which a payment of $511,997 toward the plan was due in December. Monroe County s Weather Now! 337-5000
