From the Mayor Welcome to Fergus Falls, a progressive community of opportunity. We feel we can offer you the best of both worlds accessibility to an abundance of activities yet the warm, friendly feeling of a close knit community. As the gateway to more than 1,000 lakes in Otter Tail County, we are excited by the projections of significant population growth over the next 25 years. To top it off, Fergus Falls was just named the 17th best city in Minnesota for young families in a study conducted by the consumer advocacy site Nerd- Wallet. An excellent quality of life is evident in every aspect of our city; our schools boast updated facilities and programs of learning. Our regional health care system features the latest medical technology and staffing excellence. Our scenic parks welcome residents and visitors every day. Pebble Lake, the Pebble Lake Golf Course and DeLagoon Recreational Park offer enjoyable recreational opportunities in surroundings of natural beauty. Our Public Library offers quality service and is a source of pride for residents and visitors of all ages. The fine arts are a shining star in our community. The Fergus Falls Concert Association, A Center for the Arts, M State Fergus Falls and our schools provide the most entertaining and enjoyable fine arts experiences available in west central Minnesota. If you are looking for a great place to call home, our city and chamber staff can help you with business and family locations and new business development. Economic development and opportunity await entrepreneurs, or businesses looking to expand or relocate in our varied and well-planned commercial sites and industrial parks. Whether your visit to Fergus Falls involves a quick business trip, a visit with relatives or a pleasant vacation to enjoy our city, we invite you to use the resources of our community to make your stay a pleasant and memorable one. We are happy to have you as our guest and welcome you to be a part of our community. Welcome Greetings and Welcome to Fergus Falls. What brought you here? Friends? Family? Work? Regardless of why you are here we hope your visit will give you a chance to relax and unwind. Our slogan Find Us, Lose Yourself! challenges and invites you to come to Fergus Falls to rejuvenate yourself. After all, it s nice to go home feeling invigorated and refreshed. Fergus Falls residents work hard to exemplify Minnesota Nice. We are proud of this town and look forward to showing it off and sharing with you. When you walk down Lincoln Ave. don t be surprised by the friendliness in the waves and smiles of people you meet. It s possible this printed (or digital) guide doesn t address everything you might want to know. So ask the people you are visiting, the front desk person at your hotel, your waiter or the bait shop owner. Kiosks with maps, brochures and guides are located throughout town. Pick up whatever you need or stop by the Chamber of Commerce for that specialized request. Fergus Falls is only 2½ hours northwest of Minneapolis/St. Paul, and an hour southeast of Fargo/Moorhead. We re right off I-94 with five exits into our community. Exit 54 is the primary commercial and hotel area. You ll find great places to eat and your choice of accommodations including luxury whirlpool suites and resorts. There is a lot to see and do here. If your schedule allows, check online for one of our suggested itineraries do you like the arts? history? the outdoors? We hope you have a few days to stay; otherwise, plan a return visit to get the full flavor of the area. Shopping can be found in two main areas the west end (by the hotels) which features many national chains and our mall, and downtown keep driving through the tree-covered streets of Lincoln Avenue and you ll be greeted by coffee shops, boutiques and antique stores. Special events throughout the year warrant a visit Frostbite Festival, Summerfest, PRCA Rodeo, Viking Challenge and more. Our location as an anchor to the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail, Central Lakes Trail and Otter Trail Scenic Byway have people flocking to see what the buzz is about. Don t forget about our lakes. Over 1,000 lakes in the area call people to fish, boat, ski and relax. We are quickly becoming a bike-friendly community and also cater to motorcycle enthusiasts. With the popularity of races, runs and challenges the Fergus Falls Race Series invites participation in some or all with a chance to win prizes year-end. These are just a few of the things that make it worth getting to know Fergus Falls. Maybe you re here on business or considering a move to Fergus Falls. All the elements that make us a great tourist destination combine with a strong business climate, great schools and strong community infrastructure to make Fergus Falls a great place to work and live. Dining From fresh-caught fish to Asian specialties, all palates are satisfied in Fergus Falls. We offer several franchise favorites in family and fast food dining, but also pride ourselves on some very special local flavor. Bello Cucina is an Italian favorite with a diverse and frequently changing menu. City Bakery is popular for sweet treats, fresh baked goods and lunch. For that morning espresso drink, try the Café 116 adjacent to The Market. At WestRidge Mall the Three Guys Deli and Grill has become a favorite for hamburgers. Enjoy the fireplace as you dine at Mabel Murphy s. Stella s in Battle Lake is a delightful place for dinner and music. Fabulous ethnic food options include Don Pablo s Mexican restaurant or Hunan Spring Buffet. Cally s Café, the Spot and The Viking Cafe offer fabulous fare as well. History Historic Downtown and RiverWalk Fergus Falls is a river city. It was settled when transportation and industry were still dependent on water power. It was the river that drew settlers from the East who recognized the rapids along the Otter Tail River as a sign of future prosperity. Dozens of historic buildings and sites in downtown Fergus Falls tell the story of those who settled in Fergus Falls. Through guided tours of Lincoln Avenue or a self-guided stroll along the RiverWalk, our history comes alive. See calendar of events on pages X for guided tour dates by the OTCHM, 218-736-6038. Fergus Falls State Hospital Drive through the campus and revel in the beauty of the Fergus Falls State Hospital. Located at the northernmost end of Union Avenue, this castle-like historic structure built in the 1890s is one of the few remaining complete examples of a Thomas Kirkbride-designed psychiatric hospital. Sitting atop a hill, the eight-story brick tower is capped by a red tile roof. Two wings of patient rooms run east and west from the tower. The main building is about 1,600 feet long and at one time housed as many as 2,000 mentally-ill patients. Now owned by the City of Fergus Falls, a redevelopment and reuse effort is underway to preserve this local treasure. 218-332-5400. Phelps Mill A unique, very picturesque spot in the Otter Tail countryside is Phelps Mill. Originally called the Maine Roller Mills, the mill is no longer in operation but is now the focal point of a beautifully landscaped county park. The original milling equipment is still there with descriptions about its workings. During the Phelps Mill Festival, July 11th and 12th, art and history combine for the area s largest, high quality, art and craft event in the area. The festival also provides two full days of food, entertainment and kids activities. www.phelpsmillfestival.com Otter Tail County Historical Museum The OTCHM is recognized as one of the best local history museums in Minnesota. From authentically recreated dioramas and period rooms to creative hands-on activities, the museum is a unique cultural resource the entire family can enjoy. New in 2015 is the exhibition Great Objects, Great Moments, Great Memories. OTCHS collects artifacts that illustrate moments in history and have the power to inspire ordinary and extraordinary recollections. Both individually and collectively, the wide variety of objects in the exhibit represent common and unique events. As visitors interact with the objects on display, they are encouraged to share their own thoughts and experiences. Great Objects, Great Moments, Great Memories runs until December 2015. The Museum is open Monday-Friday 9-5, Saturdays 9-2 (June-August only). Admission is $5 for ages 12 to adult; $2 for children 5-11; and free for kids under 5. www. otchs.org, 1110 Lincoln Ave. W, 218-736-6038.
