ASC e-news Electronic news from the Adelaide Soaring Club Number 4/2019 11 th April 2019 Hi and welcome to our latest ASC e-news. We especially welcome our newest members: Nicholas Lyddon Warnest, Tharane Thamodarar, Fraser Marthiou Strain, John Frederick Ennis, David Hill Thyer and Ray Conley. Hangar Rash? You may have read all the emails warning about a slipping hazard in the hangar this is why! Apologies to anyone who has opened this document up while having dinner.

Congratulations Terry Cubley (former ASC member) Terry, Vicky and Family at Vic Govt. House for Terry s AM Award Ceremony. Congratulations again. Grant to the ASC by P.G. Sachs Grants Coordinator. Advice has been received that the ASC has been successful in gaining a $2,000 grant via the Commonwealth Government s annual Volunteer support Grant scheme. The grant will assist the ASC to purchase equipment in support the work undertaken by the club s volunteers. Our Airfield Manager in conjunction with the Committee will identify appropriate equipment for purchase. Thanks Rob. Some members visited the Vimy at Adelaide Airport in March for a lecture on the historic flight then retired to the Lockley's Hotel for a meal and to raise a few glasses to celebrate the Crew, their great skill and their Courage during the flight 100 years ago. Spot Chantal Didenko, Vlad, Noah Beckmann, Rob Moore, Peter Sadler and our former RAAus CFI Harold Walton and his wife Andrea Glover - unfortunately Tom and Karen Leech left before the picture was taken. There will be a talk on the flight at the Torrens Parade Ground Drill Hall by an expert on the subject of the Flight, Lainie Anderson, on the 28th of May, see link https://historyfestival.sa.gov.au/33380 The Vimy exhibit will be open to the public on the 20th of October during an open day at the Adelaide Airport, watch the press nearer the Date for further information. There is a great Photo on Face Book of Terry Cubley at Government house receiving his AM I will try to Down load it so we can all see it. Are they yours? A pair of valuable-looking bifocal prescription sunglasses were found around the aerodrome and are now held in the ASC office. Colour? Brownish tint. Style? Tom Cruise Top Gun. If they re yours you can reclaim them from the office. Did you know...what the yellow dotted line on the tarmac in front of the hangar is for? Answer: It marks the limit for parking of aircraft (and parts of aircraft) so that the taxiway is not obstructed. Please do not park powered aircraft or gliders with any part of their structure on the runway side of the yellow dotted line. Of course, no motor vehicle should be parked across the yellow line. ever.

An Adventure for sure John Ennis and Bruce Tuncks are pictured about to leave for Queensland in John's HK 36 Super Dimona on Monday. John was a member of the club in the sixties and had done a couple of training stints to fly his recently purchased Super Dimona. He had spent a few Monday social hours with the "Monday Mob" reminiscing with tell-tale stories. Bruce Tuncks received his conversion accreditation to be able to fly with John to take the aircraft home to Queensland. A New Arrival Steve and Pete Cesco have a new aircraft on site - it is a Nimbus 3DM, with a wingspan of 25.6 Meters and a glide ratio of 55:1 It is self-launching with the motor retracting into the fuselage after launch. Attached photos are with Brian Rau and Graham Beck in one and Graham in the other just after the first rig of the aircraft. First Solo Certificates Gliding / LSA In an effort to more formally recognise the very significant first solo flights by members, either associated with Gliding or LSA, an initiative is being implemented to recognise this special occasion. It will take the form of a framed certificate incorporating where possible, a photograph of the pilot taken on the day of their first solo flight. The first phase of this initiative will be to cover those pilots who soloed in 2018 and thereafter subsequent years. As at 25/04/19, the following names have been collated for solos in 2018: Gliding Christian Brini November 2018 Others??? LSA Andrew Dansie November 14 th, 2018 Mick Fidock November 23 rd, 2018 Michael Heather December 12 th, 2018. Any pilots not listed above and who soloed in 2018, in particular, likewise contact Peter Sachs providing the relevant details as per above.
