Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Training On Thursday 15 th March, you may have seen 35 year 10 students taking part in Bronze D of E training. We spent the day preparing for the forthcoming expeditions that take place in May and June. In the morning we looked at the highway code, countryside code, suitable kit for the expedition and how to pack a rucksack. Some students didn t like the idea of what is essential and what is a luxury but when we saw how much you needed to carry, and how heavy the rucksack was, a lot of the essential suddenly became luxuries! After break time all students practiced putting up tents and cooking lunch on a Trangia (camping stove). Students displayed a range of culinary skills, from producing luke warm water used to cook a pot noodle, to broccoli and carrot pasta bake and even chocolate rice crispy cakes! Luckily, we were back inside just before the heavy rain in the afternoon. According to Katie Moss I really enjoyed myself and learnt a lot whilst having fun, and Jess Rowland said I m really excited about the expeditions now I ve had a go at some of things we ll be doing. Bring it on! The Bronze Practice expedition is on Sat 5 th Sun 6 th May near Cannock Chase and the Qualifying expedition is on Sat 23 rd Sun 24 th June in the Peak District. The Silver Practice expedition is on Sat 26 th Sun 27 th May near Bakewell and the Qualifying expedition is on Sat 14 th Mon 16 th July near the Long Mynd in Shropshire. If any parents or staff would like to come for a walk in the beautiful countryside and volunteer to help walk with groups or support the Duke of Edinburgh team then please don t hesitate to get in touch! The Study Centre Warwickshire Secondary Book Award 2018 Recently, our Year 7/8 reading group made the trip to Avon Valley School in Rugby for the final Award Ceremony of the Warwickshire Secondary Book Award. The event started with a talk by two of the Shortlisted Authors, Geraldine McCaughrean and Matt Dickinson, followed by a Q & A session. The morning continued with video interviews with four other shortlisted Authors and finally the announcement of the winner for this year, Lie, Kill, Walk Away by Matt Dickinson. This Award is voted for entirely by students of Warwickshire Schools, so it was a huge bonus to have Matt there to receive his Award and the congratulations of the enthusiastic audience. Some of our students made the following comments: I really enjoyed taking part in the Book Award and thought the books were fantastic. It made me read things I wouldn t normally and I was surprised at how much I liked them. Lie, Kill, Walk Away is a very intriguing book. I really enjoyed the experience and I especially liked the question and answer session with the Authors. It was interesting learning of their thoughts, how they get their ideas and the writing process. I really liked talking to kids from other schools about what they thought of the books and listening to Authors give writing tips. Winner of the Warwickshire Secondary Book Award 2018 This book and all of the other shortlisted titles are available to loan from the Library

During the Easter break the Classics department took 61 students to visit the historic sites of Rome, Ostia and Pompeii that they study for their GCSE. Places visited were The Colosseum, Circus maximus, the Forum, Trevi Fountains, the port of Ostia, the Pantheon, Pompeii, Herculaneum, climbing Vesuvius, and Sorrento. A great time was had by all. Next trip in 2020! Gladiators fighting to the death in Pompeii s amphitheatre. Amazed by the grandeur of the Colosseum. The group in the Garden of the Fugitives in Pompeii. Vesuvius in the background ready to be climbed by the group in the afternoon.
