Safety Tip Carbon Monoxide Poisoning? by Gary Pelach Have you ever experienced carbon monoxide poisoning? Are you familiar with the symptoms you may experience if you are suffering from it? An Aviation Newstalk podcast recently interviewed a Minnesota pilot who survived a crash after suffering from CO poisoning. They discuss how he easily attributed his symptoms to other events, and why you shouldn't trust your pulse oximeter (which is what I have) when it comes to detecting CO. The pilot who passed out on his third flight of the day due to an exhaust system leak that let CO enter the cockpit. He talks about the symptoms, and his belief that all pilots should fly with CO detectors. Close to home in November a Sioux City area fatal crash claiming four lives was originally thought to have resulted when the pilot suffered a heart attack. But autopsies reviled the four men onboard were exposed to high levels of carbon monoxide which is colorless and odorless. Symptoms of this fatal gas are 1. Headache 2. Muscles weakness and Dizziness 3. Nausea and vomiting 4. Shortness of breath 5. Confusion and Drossiness 6. Blotted Vision 7. Seizure. There are many inexpensive light weight portable Carbon Monoxide detectors available that should be on and in view when you fly. I will order a detector today, the old plastic stick-on detector that changes color, while better than nothing, is not a reliable indicator. Fly-out January 5, 2019 to Norfolk, NE (OFK) 97 nautical miles south and slightly west of Y14. Everyone met at Barnstormers the restaurant right on the airport. There approximately 13 planes from Y14 along with about 25 people. Everyone joyed a nice meal.
