He will return to Iowa State University on January 13 th. This semester he will get deeper into the Aerospace classes. During the Christmas Break William has been putting in time flying to improving his skills. He was going to take the written portion of the private pilot license but with the government shut down he has to wait until he returns in May to finish. His plan is to complete everything needed for the pilot license and continue on for an instrument rating before he returns to school in the fall. Please extend our thanks again for honoring William with this scholarship. It helped get him to where he is today. Thank you. Sincerely, Teresa Seykora AirVenture 2018 Right: B-1 Bomber Left: Night Fireworks February 2019 Page 3
Safety Tip Aviation Safety Report System and NASA reports by Gary Pelach The Aviation Safety Report System (ASRS) allows pilots to identify safety hazards in operating practices. By filing a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) report, you make your concerns known in an anonymous way, so that any disincentive to make the report because of embarrassment or concern about FAA enforcement action is removed. The information is collected and analyzed by NASA to create data useful in making modifications to the system to avoid future mishaps. The joint agreement of the FAA and NASA was agreed on after an airliner accident that involved a misunderstanding in procedures that was not known to the FAA but was known to pilots. At the time, there wasn t a way for pilots to make their concerns known to the FAA. It was agreed that NASA as an impartial third party, would collect and analyze aviation safety reports to the FAA, so circumstances that compromises safety may be remedied. NASA shares the information, but not the source of the information. Once the report is received and NASA enters the objective data into its system, the report and any personally identifying information is destroyed, protecting your anonymity. So if at any time you bust an altitude, miss a clearance restriction, or have any aviation safety incident, file a NASA report within 10 days. You can find and complete it online, you ll protect yourself and contribute to aviation safety. Fly-out January 5, 2019 to Norfolk, NE (OFK) more pictures Right: Norfolk Terminal.
