Journey to Persia - Trip Notes General Trip info Map Trip Code: EAXP Trip Length: 15 Trip starts in: Tehran Trip ends in: Tehran Meals: Persian cuisine has always been highly rated, but standards in some restaurants have dropped since the revolution, due to a restricted choice and variety of ingredients Accommodation: Transport: 15 nights hotel, all en suite Travel by air-conditioned bus Daily Itinerary Day 1 Tehran Those on the group flights arrive very early this morning (or late the previous night) and will be transferred to the hotel. Land only passengers should arrive at the hotel this morning though we do recommend arriving the night before if not on the group flights (this night is included). Tehran is a sprawling metropolis buzzing with people. It is the economic heart of Iran and a modern city with museums, cafes and restaurants. We head out into Tehran and visit the Archaeological Museum with its collections of pottery, bronze and valuable pieces from various ages ranging from millenniums BCE to the Islamic era. We also visit the Abguineh Glass and Ceramics Museum, a valuable collection of pre-islamic, Islamic and European glass and ceramics displayed within an elegant early-20th Century mansion. Finally, we visit the Carpet Museum with its extensive collection of old and new Persian carpets and rugs from the country s major carpet-weaving centres. * Grand Hotel #2 / Hotel *Enghelab, *or similar* Day 2 We see more of Tehran today with full day visits including the Golestan Palace Museum Complex, built by Fath-Ali Shah of the Qajar Dynasty and dating from the 18th to the early 20th century. We continue to the Shams-ol-Emareh (Sun) Palace and the Ethnographic Museum, with a walk around the garden to enjoy the beautiful tile-covered walls and buildings. In the afternoon, we visit the fabulous State s Jewels Museum, housed in the vaults of the Central Bank of Iran displaying the most dazzling and priceless collection of jewels and gems in the world. * Grand Hotel #2 / Hotel *Enghelab, *or similar*

Day 3 As we leave the hustle and bustle of the Iranian capital behind, we make our way through the desert to Kashan. This oasis town was a favourite of Shah Abbas who was buried here. Visit the historical garden of Fin which was first planted during the Safavid period and kept alive with water from the nearby Sulaimanieh Spring. This beautiful garden was expanded by the Zand and Qajar monarchs, with many open pavilions added. In Kashan, there are also fine examples of grand 19th Century merchant residences and we will have the chance to visit one these. We continue on to Abyaneh, a small village hidden away in the Karkas Mountains and an Iranian Cultural Heritage Site. The village was originally settled by Zoroastrians fleeing the Arab invasion of Persia and is very traditional with winding alleys of red-mud brick houses adorned with lattice woodwork and balconies. The people of Abyaneh have preserved their ancient culture and traditions over the centuries and dress in colourful clothes (Total drive time about 6hrs plus visits). * Hotel Abyaneh or similar* Day 4 After touring Abyaneh, we drive to Yazd. En route, we stop in the town of Na in to visit the early Islamic period Friday Mosque and the Pirnia House /Ethnographic Museum, a beautiful example of a late Safavid period private house with delicate monochrome painted plaster decoration. We continue to the nearby village of Mohammadiye to see the traditional pit workshops weaving the camel cloaks worn by the Muslem clergy in Iran, before finally arriving in Yazd. (total drive time about 7hrs plus visits) *Tourist Inn or similar* Day 5 We enjoy a full day sightseeing in historic Yazd, the centre for Iran s small Zoroastrian community. Visit one of the two Zoroastrian abandoned Towers of Silence (Dakhma). Dating back to the 18th Century, until some 70-odd years ago the bodies of the dead were carried and left here to decompose and be devoured by birds. The next Zoroastrian site is the Fire Temple which houses a flame which is said to have been burning for over 1,500 years. Amongst Yazd s Islamic sites are the Friday Mosque (1324AD) which boasts the highest portal and minarets in Iran and the Mirchachmagh Maidan and Mosque. Other notable monuments, found in the old Fahadan area of Yazd, are the Saljuk shrine, dedicated to the Twelve Shi ite Imams; and Ziaieyeh Theological School, also known as Znedan-e-Eskander (Alexander s Prison). Yazd also has many beautiful old houses such as Dowlat-Abad Garden, an 18th Century feudal hexagonal house. *Tourist Inn or similar* Day 6 Leaving Yazd, our first stop is the troglodyte village of Maymand. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage site, villagers still live in cave dwellings today. We explore the village and visit some of these cave dwellings which have been transformed as show-houses. As the caves are strewn along a slope with rubble, make sure to wear walking shoes or trainers with grip. We continue to the desert trading city of Kerman with its blend of Persian and Baluchi people (Total drive time 7.5hrs plus visits). * Hotel Akhavan or similar* Day 7 We head towards the village of Rayan to visit the Arg (Citadel) of Rayan, a miniature version of the Bam Citadel which was destroyed by an earthquake in 2003. Arg-e-Rayan has all the typical architectural features of a desert citadel with ramparts, towers, covered lanes and spectacular views of the nearby Mt. Hezar, snowcapped for most of the year. Retruning towards Kerman, we stop in the small town of Mahan to visit the blue-tiled Mausoleum of Shah Nematollah-e-Vali, the great 14th century Sufli Leader, and the Shahzadeh Garden (a late 19th century Qajar period house and garden). Back in Kerman we visit the Friday Mosque, the Ganj-Ali Khan Complex and Hammam which has been converted into an Ethnographic Museum. We explore the Maidan (square) with its mosque, madrassa and water cistern all dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries and the Vakil Tea House (another covered bathhouse). We will walk through bazaar. Being a Friday, some shops may be closed but there s still a great atmosphere. * Hotel Akhavan or similar*

Day 8 Today is the longest travel day. This is mitigated, however, by the stunning scenery as we cross over the Zagros Mountains and into Iran s fertile Fars region to the city of gardens and poets which is Shiraz. On the way, we visit the remains of the Sassanian Palace at Sarvestan, a fifth century building thought to be a hunting lodge built by Bahram V (9 hrs plus stops). *Hotel Park-e-Sa adi or similar* Day 9 Shiraz, the city of roses and nightingales is the centre of Persian culture, known for its poets, gardens and, at one time, wine which was produced in the fertile valley the city is located in. We spend the day exploring Shiraz s main sites, visiting the expansive Eram Garden; the tomb of Iran s greatest lyric poet: Hafez, a popular spot for local lovers, the pink tiled 19th century Nasir-ol-Molk Mosque with its coloured glass windows, the Arg-e-Karim Khan (an 18th century citadel; the Madrassa Khan where we can interact with students and teachers, the Qajar-period Narenjestan Garden and House, the Vakil Bazaar and the Holy Shrine of Shah-e-Cheragh (though only from the outside if not Muslim as it is not open to non-muslims). *Hotel Park-e-Sa adi or similar* Day 10 We spend today exploring the heritage of the Achaemenid dynasty in Persepolis and the royal tombs of Naghsh-e-Rostam. Persepolis, the ceremonial capital of the Achaemenid kings with remains of the palaces of Darius the Great, Xerxes and Artaxerxes, is famous for its bas-reliefs depicting kings, courtiers and gift-bearing representatives of tributary nations of the Persian Empire ranging from India to Ethiopia. We then visit nearby Naghsh-e-Rostam to see Ka be-zardosht (a fire temple) and the royal tombs dug into the rock itself. This site also has seven magnificent Sassanian rock-reliefs including Shapur the First s famous victory over Roman Emperor Valerian. *Hotel Park-e-Sa adi or similar* Day 11 We head to Iran s greatest city, Isfahan. En route we visit Pasargadae, the site of the simple, but impressive tomb and remains of the palaces of Cyrus the Great, the founder of the Persian Empire (Total drive time 6-7hrs plus visits). * Hotel Sheikh-Bahaee or similar* (Please note that on the 20 October 2018 we will only see the site of Pasargadae from the road as the site itself will be closed). Day 14 We drive to Tehran, and en-route stop at the charming desert town of Natanz to visit the beautiful Islamic Complex of Mosque, Monastery and Tomb of Sheikh Abdol-Samad Isfahani. We have a tea-break under the shade of a 500-year old plain tree. Our last night is spent in a hotel by the airport ready for the early flights (total drive time 6hrs plus visits) * Hotel Ibis or similar* Day 15 Tehran The tour ends after breakfast. From the Hotel Ibis, it is a short walk to the departure terminal via the sky bridge - please make your own way there to catch your flight. If you have booked post tour accommodation in Tehran Proper you will have to change hotels.

Additional Information Notes for Iran Travel through sophisticated Islamic cities, atmospheric bazaars, ancient Persian ruins, dazzling mountains and deserts in Iran, a truly exciting and off-the-beaten-track destination for any traveller. Relax in a teahouse in Tehran after exploring its ornate Golestan Palace, take a guided tour of the ancient Persian ruins of Persepolis, enjoy an overnight stay in a medieval-era Silk Road caravanserai, discover the historic Safavid city of Esfahan and its phenomenal mosques and palaces. Best of all, experience the warmth and hospitality of the Iranian people, and discover why many visitors say that Iran is one of the most welcoming places on Earth. Citizens of all countries will need a visa to enter Iran. The entire process can take around 60 days, so please ensure you start your application early. You will need an Authorisation Number from an Iranian agent in order to make the visa application. Firstly we will need to apply for an Authorisation Number for you. We will contact you when you book and ask you to fill out a form with some details on, which we will use to obtain an Authorisation Number so that you can apply for your visa. The Authorisation Number for Iran can take several weeks to issue (please expect it to be at least 45 days), and will be emailed to you once they are ready. It is extremely important that you specify which embassy you intend to later apply for your visa at when you fill in your Authorisation Number application above. This cannot be changed once the application is in, and any Authorisation Number that you are issued is only valid at the embassy that you have stated. For example, if you state on your Authorisation Number applicaion that you'll apply for the visa in London, then later change your mind and want to get it in Paris instead, your number will not be valid for Paris and you'll have to start your application again from the beginning! Please also note that the Iranian Foreign Ministry usually closes over the Iranian New Year period (approximately 12 March to 2 April) and will not process Authorisation applications over this time. Please have your visa application in well before this date. After your Authorisation has been issued, you can use this to apply for the visa at the Iranian Embassy that you have specified. You will need to apply directly to the embassy, and citizens of the UK will need to attend the embassy in person to give fingerprints during the visa application. If you are flying into Tehran to start your trip, we advise citizens of the UK, USA and Canada to apply for the visa in advance from your home country or the closest embassy to it. Citizens of most other countries will be able to obtain the visa on arrival at Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport (you will still have to have applied for an Authorisation Number) - please note this option is not available for UK, USA and Canada citizens, and a visa on arrival is not available at land borders for any nationality. To obtain your visa, 4 passport photos are required. Women should wear a headscarf, no make-up, jewellery or facial piercings in their visa application photos. Many Iranian embassies will only accept payments in Euros, so please make sure you bring this with you from home. Most embassies charge EUR200-250 for UK, USA and Canada citizens, and approximately EUR100 for others. Citizens of the UK will need to attend the embassy in person to give fingerprints during the visa application. If you are asked to provide an address in Iran on your visa form, please use the address below: Atlas Hotel, 206 Taleghani Avenue, Gharani Corner, Tehran, Iran Tel: +98 281 890 7475 Please note that your visa will be flatly refused if your passport contains evidence of travel to Israel (including Egyptian or Jordanian exit stamps at borders with Israel). Please also note that travelling to Iran will usually make you ineligible for the USA's ESTA visa waiver scheme should you plan to travel to the USA in the future. You will still be able to travel to the USA, but will have to obtain a visa (usually the B-1/B-2 temporary visitor's visa) to

do so as your ESTA will be denied. There are some exceptions to this, please see the following link for more details - http://www.state.gov/r/pa/prs/ps/2016/01/251577.htm. A valid yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers coming from areas with risk of yellow fever transmission. Alcohol and pork products are strictly forbidden in Iran and will be confiscated at customs by anyone attempting to bring it into the country. Please do not try to bring alcohol into the country under any circumstances - your leader will ask you to dispose of it before heading to the border. Iran is a conservative Islamic nation and a strict dress code is enforced throughout the country. Any deviation from the dress code may have you refused entry at the border, or in trouble with the police or locals once inside the country. Men must wear long trousers at all times - ankles must be covered, but short sleeved shirts are acceptable. Open-toe sandals are fine to wear for both men and women. Women are required by law to wear long, loose-fitting clothing in public. You must also wear a headscarf (any colour you like, though you will find that local women usually prefer black) in public. There is no rule of the colour of your outfit as long as it is modest and includes a headscarf. Generally female travellers can wear the loose fitting long-sleeved shirts available in many Asian shops that reach down to the thighs - any type of trousers underneath is allowed as long as they cover your ankles. Women are able to wear open-toed shoes and sandals as long as their ankles are not showing. Please note that any British, US or Canadian citizens that are flying into Tehran to start the trip will need to book an arrival transfer in advance, and this must be done through us according to Iranian law. The best way to bring money out is in USD or EUR cash, which can be exchanged for local currency once in Iran. It is not worth trying to find local currency before you travel. ATMs are common but will only work with Iranian bank cards.

Important Notes The routes, activities and places visited as described in these trip notes are intentions and are meant as a rough guide only. These trip notes have been compiled to help you prepare for your journey once you have booked. They include the full itinerary and dates, and information about kit lists, meeting hotels, insurance, vaccinations, visas, and other information that will help you get ready for your trip. These notes are updated regularly, so please ensure you have an up-to-date version of these trip notes. The planned route and itinerary is the intention, but exact night stops and inclusions cannot be guaranteed. It occasionally happens that there must be a change to our planned itinerary - this may be for a variety of reasons, such as climatic, road or bureaucratic conditions. By their very nature, adventure travel needs to be approached flexibly and some regions can be unpredictable. Some Imaginative Traveller journeys go through off the beaten track areas, which often have poor infrastructure and less stringent safety standards than we are used to at home. Our Groups Our groups are made up of people from around the world and are usually an interesting mix of nationalities and ages. On average there is a pretty even split, males to females and between solo travellers, couples and small groups of friends. We believe that adventure travel should be open to as many people as possible and so although some trips have a minimum age limit, as long as you are fit, healthy and passionate about travel, we are happy to take you. One of the highlights of group travel is the camaraderie and friendships that are formed along the way, and as well as the variety of people that you will meet. The maximum group size depends on the operator and the style of transport, but will usually be a maximum of 15-16 or up to 21-22 on our overland journeys. Accommodation Imaginative Traveller trips are designed for shared accommodation, whether staying in hotels, hostels, homestays or campsites, and therefore do not involve a single supplement. Single travellers will share with people of the same sex for the duration of the trip and those that book together will usually be able to share accommodation. The type, variety and standard of accommodation will vary greatly depending on what options are available in the region you are travelling; hotels can vary from very basic rooms without electricity or running water to high standard hotels with good facilities! Generally in hotels most rooms will be twin-share. Hostels, gers and yurts are nearly always multi-share. Many trips will feature a stay in a local homestay or community tourism initiative, allowing us to experience a slice of local life in the areas we travel through. On our overland trips, we will sometimes camp in campsites ranging from rather basic or even wild camps to those with excellent facilities, including swimming pools, restaurants and bars. Dietary Requirements If you have any dietary requirements please tell us at the time of booking and also remind your leader at your welcome meeting. Our crew will try to cater for any particular dietary requirement or food intolerance whenever possible. Health You need to be in good physical health in order to participate fully in our trips. When selecting your trip

please make sure you have read through the itinerary carefully and assessed your ability to cope with the style of travel on that trip. We are always happy to give extra advice if you have additional concerns. Please note that if, in the opinion of our leader, you are unable to complete the itinerary without undue risk to yourself and/or the rest of the group, Imaginative Traveller or our partner operators reserve the right to exclude you from all or part of the trip. You should consult your doctor for up-to-date medical travel information prior to travel, particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition. We also advise you to declare any pre-existing medical conditions to your travel insurers upon purchase. Altitude Imaginative Traveller offers some trips that travel to above 2,800m altitude above sea level - it is imperative at high altitudes to drink lots of water to stay hydrated, be careful not to get burned by the sun, and try not to exert yourself too much. Some pre-existing medical conditions are known to severely worsen at high altitude and be difficult to adequately treat on the ground, leading to more serious consequences. It is imperative that you discuss your pre-existing medical condition/s with your doctor. We understand certain medications are reported to aid acclimatising to high altitude; please discuss these options with your doctor. Yellow Fever A valid international certificate of vaccination against Yellow Fever is required in many countries. You may need to present this on arrival at the airport or border crossing. Some countries will refuse entry if you are unable to present your certificate - please see each country's note above for details. It's also quite common for your home country to request a Yellow Fever certificate on your arrival back home. It is your responsibility to check with your doctor well in advance of leaving home about the Yellow Fever requirements for the countries you'll be visiting. Malaria and other mosquito-borne diseases Some areas we travel to have the risk of contracting malaria. If this applies to your trip, please get expert advice before travelling about types of malaria pills and take them as instructed. Recommended types do change from time to time and from area to area. Consult your GP / travel clinic for the most up-to-date requirements and to find the right option for you. If advised by your doctor to take a course of anti-malarial tablets, please complete the course as instructed as malaria can often manifest itself upon your return home if the course is not followed. Other mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue Fever, Chikungunya and Zika are continuing to spread and becoming a bigger problem around the world. Bite prevention is vital to avoid contracting any of these diseases as there are no vaccines or specific treatments available. Health professionals have issued warnings for pregnant women travelling to areas affected by the Zika virus. The mosquito usually bites between the hours of dusk and dawn and so covering up by wearing long-legged and long-sleeved clothing, preferably light coloured and buttoned at the wrists, can help. Do not sleep without closing windows, use a mosquito net where possibly and use mosquito repellent applied directly to your skin or soaked into your clothing. Vaccinations Recommended vaccinations and other health protection vary according to different regions and recent bulletins issued by health authorities. It is essential to get the latest advice on the region(s) you are planning to travel in so please check with either your doctor or travel clinic in good time before you travel. We also recommend you check out any specific health advice for the country you are travelling to either via your GP or the following websites: www.nathnac.org or www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk In the UK, we have been working with Nomad Travel for many years and their website has comprehensive,

up-to-date vaccination and health information. You will receive a 10% discount off all vaccinations given at Nomad Travel clinics. Activities Included activities are listed in the day-to-day itinerary, all other activities are optional and at your own expense. If you choose not to participate in the included activities on this itinerary, the cost will not necessarily be refunded; this is something you will need to check with your leader. A selection of optional activities is listed in the day-to-day itinerary. This list is designed to be a helpful guide as to what is commonly available in each location, and is neither an exhaustive list, a guarantee that the activity is available, or an endorsement or recommendation. Please note that certain activities may not be available on your particular visit if they are overbooked, underbooked, out of season, or for any other reason - the list of activities is made according to our latest information and in the best faith, but please be aware that things may change between our last visit and your arrival. Please also note that it may not be possible to do all the activities listed in the time available at each destination, and it is recommended to give yourself extra time in your joining or ending city if you would like to participate in some optional activities there. If you do any optional activities, you do so at your own risk and it must be clearly understood that your participation is your own decision and does not form part of your contract with Dragoman. You may be required to sign/complete a waiver form or optional activity form for some optional activities. Insurance It is a condition of booking that you have comprehensive travel insurance. Without evidence of valid travel insurance you will not be allowed to start the trip. This can be arranged by Imaginative Traveller through our website or by contacting our team of travel consultants. If you prefer to arrange your insurance independently, it should have a minimum medical (including repatriation) cover of 2,000,000. We recommend that any policy also has a minimum level of cover for Personal Liability of 2,000,000 and for Cancellation and Curtailment of 5,000. Cover for loss of baggage, personal effects, money and other inclusions are down to personal choice although please bear in mind that personal effects are more likely to go missing whilst travelling and you should ensure that your policy is adequate to cover the value of your personal effects e.g. cameras, tablets, phones etc. Please note that Imaginative Traveller and our partner operators are not responsible for your personal effects and are not insured for their loss. If you prefer to arrange your insurance independently, it should cover you for any activities that you may wish to participate in, such as white-water rafting, trekking, horse-riding, etc. and the 24-hour Emergency Assistance Company must be experienced in handling situations in developing countries if applicable (e.g. they have the ability to arrange repatriation from remote areas such as the Sahara or trekking in the Andes). If you are travelling to high altitude (such as embarking on a trek to the summit of Kilimanjaro), please make sure that this is also covered. Please double check if you have annual travel and/or credit card policies to ensure they have the cover you require, as many of these policies are not suitable with adventure travel to remote areas. Many credit card medical insurance policies are not valid for travelling outside your country of residence or outside the EU. Please also check the age limits on any policy you wish to take out and make sure that you thoroughly inform the insurance company of any pre-existing conditions. Passports Check that your passport will still be valid for 6 months after the end of the trip - this is important as some countries WILL refuse entry to anyone whose passport is due to expire. A temporary or emergency passport is not valid on our trips. You will need to provide us with your passport details prior to departing for you trip. If you change your passport please remember to inform us.

We recognise that we are guests of local communities and strive to make them benefit directly from our visit. You can find full details of Imaginative Traveller's responsible tourism policy on our website. Issues on the trip While we always endeavour to provide the best possible holiday experience, due to the nature of travel and the areas we visit sometimes things can and do go wrong. Should any issue occur while you are on your trip, it is imperative that you discuss this with your group leader or our local partner straight away so that they can do their best to rectify the problem and save any potential negative impact on the rest of your trip. We recognise that there may be times when your group leader may not be able to resolve a situation to your satisfaction. If this is the case please contact our customer relations department on customer-relations@imtrav.net You may also choose to provide details in your feedback questionnaire which we ask you to complete at the end of your trip, but we do ask you to be aware that it is very difficult for us to provide any practical help after the trip is complete. Feedback After your travels, we want to hear from you! We rely on your feedback. We read it carefully. Feedback helps us to understand what we are doing well and what we could be doing better, and it allows us to make improvements for future travellers.
