Brief History The first people that inhabited the area of Mozambique were San hunters and gatherers. They were preceded by Bantu speaking peoples that were farmers and ironworkers. Mozambique originated as a Portugese colony. The Mozambique earned their independence in 1975. Filipe Nyusi currently has executive control of Mozambique
Culture Due to the some 40 languages spoken in Mozambique, less than half of the population speaks the official language (Portuguese). Song and Dance play a major role in many local customs and ceremonies. Many areas of Northern Mozambique have matrilineal societies. Maputo is the Capital of Mozambique. Half of the population are animists ( belief in spirits of ancestors affecting daily life. About one third Mozambique are Christians.

Entertainment Music plays a very large role in everyday life in mozambique. Many of the country's Holidays and festivals are based around music. For example, they have a subterranean rhythm and blues festival (STRAB) The AZGO festival in the capital of Mozambique is a music festival that takes place over a period of three days, and contains a variety of local music, games and food. The TAMBO International Art Festival in Pemba consists of a 7 day period of exchanging knowledge and tradition through the art of theatre, creation of art, and food.
Entertainment When visiting in Maputo, one can go on a walking safari with an armed ranger and safari guide. Tourists may go on a Mobile island hopping safari that involves kayaking, Dhow Sailing, and snorkeling. Wake and Kite boarding are very popular in the subtropical climate of Mozambique. Ocean side bars and clubs are very popular in Mozambique. Rock Climbing and Canyon adventure can also be done outside of Maputo.

Unique Places Casa de Ferro is an Iron House made in Maputa by the same architect of the Eiffel Tower. Many of the Churches (Dios Amos) in Mozambique have very different architecture than those in the US. Deep sea fishing in Mozambique may lead to you seeing a living fossil. The Coelacanth was recently caught off the shore of Mozambique. Cahora Bassa is one of the largest man made lakes in africa and is located in Mozambique.
Unique Places The North side of Mozambique has many unique backpacking trails that go through mountains. One of these trails is known as Jay s peak. You can hunt Crocodile, Hippo, and Elephant in Central Mozambique. Hepatitis and Malaria are very common all over Mozambique. Tofo beach is known for a location to swim with whale sharks.
Natural Attractions The Bazaruto archipelago consists of 5 islands in the Mozambique Canal, and is part of the national park that was created in 1971. Inhaca Island is home to many of the rarest floral species, and serine hidden beaches. The Quirimbas archipelago is 27 coral islands across the northern part of the country. Gorongosa Park is 1500 square miles of grasslands and rainforests in central Mozambique
Natural Attractions Mozambique Island is a very small island you can get to on a bridge from the mainland. It was once the capital and a major Arab trading post. Some of the richest coral reefs are off of the coast of Mozambique. Over 1,000 species of fish have been identified here. Pemba Beach is a very popular honeymoon destination due to the beautiful beach, and masses of resorts in the area. Ponta do ouro is the coolest beach in Mozambique. Many dolphins inhabit the area and love swimming with the tourists.

Historical Places The Fort of San Sebastian was constructed in 1558 and is one of the oldest forts still standing in sub-saharan Africa. The Lost Bierra Lighthouse is a popular attraction in Mozambique. The lighthouse is known for being built in the 1800 s and doubles as a weather station. The Statue of Luis de Camoes is a popular tourist site in Maputa. Farmers in the 1800 s built irrigation roads over the Limpopo river. Here you can drive over the hippo inhabited waters.
Historical Places Matemo Island is the location of colonial history that was a treasure island filled with ivory, slaves, and pirates. Face of the Old Man is a Historic rock formation just northeast from the Country s Capital. It is 500m wide and 200m tall. Off the shore tourists can scuba dive in the coral reef filled shipwreck of a Klipfontein Ship. The ship was built in the Netherlands and was a Navy service ship in Zambique in the 1930 s. Santa Carolina Island is famous for having Bob Dylan play a piano show for the people.
