CAFÉ STABBING Darkes Lane, Potters Bar, 5 th Feb. 13:41 hrs. Controllers heard reports that a man had been stabbed and was lying on the floor of Café Nero in Darkes Lane. Images from nearby CCTV cameras were patched through to the police control room as police units and an ambulance arrived at the scene. The area was cordoned off awaiting the arrival of Scene of Crime Officers. PCSO Recovers Knife Eldon Ave. Borehamwood. 16 th Mar. 12:26 hrs. Hertsmere police called the control room requesting that cameras be set to view Eldon Avenue following reports from a Police Community Safety Officer that she had seen a man drop a knife in an area of undergrowth before making off. Further details of the report were heard including that the man had been stabbed in the arm and a man suspected of the stabbing, had run off from the café. A description of the suspect was given, who was reported to be wearing a red puffer jacket and had made off in the direction of the train station some minutes earlier, before controllers had heard of the incident. Controllers quickly reviewed the earlier recordings of footage from cameras in the vicinity and were able to confirm the suspects description and that he appeared to be making towards a nearby McDonalds. With this information passed to the police, officers located the man and arrested him on suspicion of the stabbing. Controllers saw the PCSO run after the man and out of camera view. Other cameras were brought to bare in the search for the man, but they heard that he and another man had been apprehended and arrested by the police. The PCSO returned to Eldon Avenue and she was seen to recover the knife as evidence. In this issue Amongst the incidents occurring in the first quarter of 2016 were vandalism involving a broken window at the NHS Drop In at Hertford, where an arrest was made when the perpetrator was detained by door staff at the Stonehouse. In the same period an ambulance had to be called to treat a man for a bite from a police dog, after an affray in which the police dog unit had to be called. The man was arrested for ABH and a woman for common assault. Both incidents occurred between midnight and one in the morning. As editor of Camera Shy it is easy to become bored, even blasé reading so many such incidents, most of which involve unsocial drinking. Pressure on the NHS? I wonder. Biggleswade High Street Resist Temptation Shenley Rd, Borehamwood, 28 th Jan. 23:25 hrs. Controllers know those situations that tempt people to commit petty crime. Sometimes the act is spontaneous and at other times may appear rather too well organised. A controller noticed some tempting looking donations that had been left outside of the Age UK charity shop in Shenley Road sometime in the evening. He monitored the shop front from time to time as a safeguard against the theft of these unguarded charity items. On one such occasion at around eleven thirty in the evening a man wearing a hoody was seen to walk past the shop then suddenly stop a few feet past it. He walked back to the charity donations and helped himself to some items contained in two Lidl bags. He walked off in the direction he had originally come from and when he reached the area of The Point he met a woman who produced a large Primark bag and placed the two Lidl bags inside it. She gave him a shoulder bag she had been wearing and the two of them set of in the direction of the railway station. The couple were stopped by police officers near the Albert Pub and both were arrested. Controllers were able to confirm that the man was the one who had taken the items from the charity shop and provide supporting camera images. The behaviour of the couple when they met might suggest a certain familiarity with concealing stolen items Stolen BMW Caught On Camera St. Andrews St, Biggleswade 17 th Feb. 23:22 hrs. Details of a stolen BMW X5 Sports Utility Vehicle approaching Biggleswade were broadcast over Airwaves and CCTV controllers picked up the SUV as it turned into the High Street. Camera images were patched through to the police control room who were given a running c o m m e n - tary on the v e h i c l e s progress which they used to Hertfordshire CCTV Partnership

Double Stabbing Bushey Rose Garden A mile away from this quiet corner of Bushey two teenage girls aged 18 and 19 were the targets of a double stabbing which took place in Bushey Grove Road at 6:30 pm on 5 th January. The police control room requested an area search for a man whose description was given. Bushey is served by a single camera in Harcourt Road a mile from the incident and controllers saw no sign of any suspect. The Watford Observer later reported that a man from St. Albans was l arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm. The paper also reported that the local police crime unit had indicated that the incident had been a targeted attack. update police units. The BMW drove around Biggleswade and up Shortmead Street towards the A1M. Police units were now in pursuit and the BMW was stopped on the motorway and the driver arrested. Hertford DVD Snatches Birchley Green, Hertford, 22 nd Mar. 11:32 hrs. A spate of DVD thefts occurred on this particular T u e s d a y i n March starting in Waitrose at 11:30 am. when a stocky Asian man wearing a blue puffer jacket and jeans grabbed a whole load of DVDs and ran out of the store. When controllers began an area search for the thief, he was spotted near the Rose Café changing his green top for a grey one in order to avoid recognition. With cameras following his progress he was then seen to change his top again before stealing a bicycle for Halfords and making off towards Hertford East Station. With information on his movements the police closed in on the man, who then attempted to escape onto the railway lines. All this was to no avail as the police caught the thief and arrested him in Mead Lane. Over twenty DVDs were recovered as well as the bicycle stolen from Halfords. Birchley Green Hertford, 22 nd Mar. 12:05 hrs. Later that day controllers received a call over Shoplink from W H Smith staff reporting a man and woman who had stolen DVDs from the store and were seen getting into a black Mercedes car outside Toni and Guy hairdressers. Controllers located the car on CCTV and patched the images through to the police control room. The man was seen driving the car, whose number plates appeared to have been tampered with, while the woman was seen in the passenger seat putting the DVDs into a bag. The car was stopped in Fore Street by a PCSO and a police woman, despite an attempt by the driver to avoid being stopped. The couple were arrested and their car was seized under The Proceeds Of Crime Act 2002. Thanks to teamwork hundreds of pounds worth of DVDs were recovered. CCTV Code of Practice Publication

Bridge Street, Hitchin Too Drunk To Drive Home Bucklersbury, Hitchin 9 th Jan. 01:42 hrs. Controllers received a radio call over Pub Link, from a Hitchin Town Ranger advising them that Osinskys had refused entry to a man who was too drunk. The man had then announced that he was going to drive home, which resulted in the call from the Ranger. The man was located from the description given, in Bucklesbury getting into a red BMW three series car. The controller patched the camera images through to the police control room as he monitored the car as the driver made h i s w a y t h r o u g h Hitchin before leaving the town and out of sight. Police officers stopped the BMW and arrested the man for drink driving. Another One For The Road Bucklersbury, Hitchin 16 th Jan, 03:00 hrs. In another incident involving drink driving, controllers received a call over Pub Link from The George in Bucklesbury, reporting that a very intoxicated man had left the pub and got into a blue Honda car whose registration number was given. Controllers informed the police control room and a unit was duly dispatched. Continuing to monitor the man who was now in the Honda, controllers saw a woman leave the pub and after speaking to the driver she walked around the car and was about to get into the passenger seat when the police officers arrived. Whilst the officers were speaking to the man in the driving seat, the woman was escorted to the safety of the back seat of the police car. After speaking to the man who had by then got out of the Honda, the police vehicle left the immediate scene and parked nearby. The drunk man the obviously decided to push his luck, got back into the Honda and drove of at speed, however the officers had anticipated this eventuality and quickly set off after the car and stopped it and arrested the driver. A second police car arrived and the woman was transferred to it and taken home, while the drunk driver was arrested and taken into custody. Good teamwork and policing quickly removed a drunk driver from the roads and safeguarded the welfare of the woman, who otherwise would have been at risk. CCTV Executive Board of Elected Councillors
