MagiCurrents San Diego Ring 76 December, 2018 VOL. XXXII #12 NO BOAT CLUB EVENT THE HOLIDAY POT LUCK HAS BEEN MOVED TO A DIFFERENT LOCATION SEE BELOW Published by the International Brotherhood of Magicians Honest Sid Gerhart Ring 76 Editor and Publisher - Malcolm Campbell, Editor@ring76.com Proofreader - Sherry Luft, Photographer - James Thayer

MagiCurrents December, 2018 Page 2 Clairemont Senior Center 4425 Bannock Ave., San Diego, CA 92117 PLEASE NOTE LOCATION CHANGE!

MagiCurrents December, 2018 Page 3 HOLIDAY POT LUCK LOCATION The Clairemont Senior Center is where we held meetings before the Boat Club. Turn west onto Bannock from Genesee and it s on your right. Don t forget to bring a dish of your choice. It should be enough for 10 or more.

MagiCurrents December, 2018 Page 4 (Continued from page 6) about insurance companies and options and possible lawsuit complications, if the Boat Club does require insurance for having 50+ attending. More discussion with the Boat Club is needed to decide if we can make it work to still have the December banquet there. John Hunter offered to check with the Point Loma Masonic Lodge to see if that could be an option. Gary Salisbury mentioned the Moose or Elk lodges as possibilities. Jeff Marcus mentioned meeting spots at Balboa Park, a place that is connected to a library, and also retirement communities. Mary brought up Liberty Station, and Gary has a connection through his sister-in-law. Everybody should explore possibilities ASAP for alternatives for the December meeting. Holiday Pot Luck - There was discussion about who will bring which food items. The Boat Club wants all drinks to be purchased at their bar (In the past, the Ring brought water and coffee). The Ring will bring tablecloths to avoid the large fees now charged by the Boat Club for linens. January Meeting: Location is TBD! The theme will be Fool-Us!. We will need magicians to judge (tentatively Robert Vinson and Gary Salisbury), and magicians to perform. Gary will look into trophy design possibilities. Close-up competition - Robert brought up the fact that having each performer only do one performance, rather than having to reset, would help to expand the performing possibilities, to allow for effects that require longer setup. NEWSLETTER Malcolm Campbell presented what would be needed for the Newsletter. The board meeting adjourned at 8:47 pm..ken Intriligator, Secretary THOSE PESKY ERRORS! My cousin and I used to pass time by having a contest to see who would be the first to spot an error in the newspaper. Or we would watch old movies and pick up on goofs that were never removed from the footage. We try to keep MagiCurents as clean as possible, but the rush to meet our time constraints leaves plenty of room for error. The deadline for getting our meeting minutes to the Linking Ring is only a few days after the General Meeting and they are often sent without the benefit of the final proof-reading and without information which was added later. Therefore, they may differ from those reported in the newsletter or those archived even though they are the primary source of what is printed in the magazine. A great source of error is the handling of meeting minutes which includes editing of the versions which the public can see in the newsletter and magazine. Most absolute erors come from the publishing process which consists of several skeleton drafts. The first is a layout assembled by stripping down the previous issue to the material which will be revised and reused. Then information from membership and board meetings as well as various events is used to fill in the blanks. As careful as we are, it is not impossible for placeholders to remain in the text undetected with the result being incorrect descriptions, photos and captions. If you discover a photo of yourself and the caption says Mickey Mouse Performing, there s probably an explanation for that. We have had whole pages from the previous issue included in the next.

MagiCurrents December, 2018 Page 5 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE BY ROBERT VINSON Hi all, I am going to keep this short. Due to the Holiday Pot Luck, the next meeting is on Monday, December 10 at the Senior Center in Clairemont 4425 Bannock Ave. San Diego, CA 92117 Direct any questions concerning the calendar to V.P. Entertainment Richard Ustick, ru9@ring76.com.

MagiCurrents December, 2018 Page 6 MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 12, 2018 RING MEETING AT THE SAN DIEGO MISSION BAY BOAT AND SKI CLUB This being our bi-annual swap meet, there was no formal meeting. Sellers - of which there were 10 - began to arrange their tables about 6:00 pm. Buyers arrived about the same time and money began changing hands as buyers picked up items they couldn t do without. There were 25 or more buyers in addition to the sellers at any one time, many of which found bargains on competitor s tables. There were many treasures, including a full size guillotine and autographed lecture notes. Some of the items were from Jack White s collection and those of other former members collections which were donated to the Ring. Proceeds from those items went to the Ring. There were demonstrations of various effects to potential buyers and earnest negotiations of prices. Some sellers donated their unsold merchandise to the Ring for raffle prizes or future sales. SHAVNGS FROM THE BOARD MINUTES OF RING 76 BOARD MEETING November 26, 2018 The meeting was called to order by President Robert Vinson at 7:33 pm. All the board members were present: First V.P. (entertainment) Richard Ustick, Second V.P. (membership) James Thayer, Treasurer Bob Meigs, Sergeant-at-Arms John Hunter, Secretary Ken Intriligator, Newsletter Editor and Member-at-Large Malcolm Campbell, Member-at-Large and Past President Joe Mystic McGrievy, and Member-at-Large Rich Robertson. Guests Jeff Marcus (TVP) and Gary Salisbury were also in attendance. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes of the October Board meeting were approved. REPORTS Treasurer s report - Treasurer Bob Meigs presented his report to the Board. There was an increase in the balance, thanks to October Ring sales of donated items, and November Swap Meet table rentals. Membership report - There are currently 58 members in good standing. The past peak was around 84 members, around the years (2002 and 2010) that the IBM convention was in San Diego. OLD BUSINESS November meeting recap - The meeting was seen as a success, and it seemed that the sellers did well. NEW BUSINESS Boat Club issues - Robert was informed by Sheri from the Boat Club management company that their fees will be going up, and was given a new price sheet. Among other new charges, there will be additional fees and complications (including insurance, plus an increase of up to $500) if more than 50 people attend, and an additional $250 fee for use of the stage. We were also told that our host, Tony, must to be there, and we can be asked to leave if Tony is not there. Given these issues, there was discussion about possible alternatives for future meetings, including possibly the December holiday potluck. There was extended discussion (Continued on page 4)

MagiCurrents December, 2018 Page 11 MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW FOR THE JANUARY 2019 MEETING I know, I know, the Holiday season is not even here yet so how can we even start to think about the New Year. Right? Well, you may want to start thinking about it because at the January meeting we are going to try something different and hopefully exciting. This January, Ring 76 is going to have its own Ring 76 Fool Us event. Members of Ring 76 are invited to perform in front of the Ring and a panel of judges who will then see if they can figure out HOW THE PERFORMER DID IT!!!!! The effects do not have to be large, expensive, or really that complicated to baffle our panel of, socalled experts. Details of this event will follow. Any suggestions you have would be appreciated. We think this will be fun but only if we have the support of the Ring. See you in January! Richard Ustick VP of Entertainment IBM Ring FOCUS ON THE LINKING RING Ring 76 is in the spotlight in the November issue of the magazine with our Installation Banquet last July being featured in Ring Events. There is also a very informative article by Kent Cummins in his Marketing Magic column. There he presents an in-depth discussion about secrecy: how we need to share secrets at appropriate times but maintain them at others. This is a Must-Read for every member and the discussion should be carried on in our current mini-lecture series. Editor
