INDIA: COUNTRY AND PEOPLE India is the largest demcracy in the wrld. It is plitically, scially, and culturally ne f the mst diverse places n the planet. It is hme t ver 30 languages and numerus dialects, as well as the prpnents f all f the wrld s majr religins. These include Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Sikhism, Judaism, and Zrastrianism. Electins in India, which is a multi-party parliamentary demcracy, are held at 5- yearly intervals. The next electins are due in 2019. The tw main plitical parties are the Cngress and the BJP. Since Indians are vcal participants in the plitical prcess, discussing the electins with lcals wuld make an excellent tpic f cnversatin. Indians subscribe t a variety f identities, including regin, language, caste, class, plitical rientatin, and religin. These identities interact with each ther and ne may becme dminant ver thers depending n the cntext. Asking smene what regin they are frm, what language they speak at hme, where they were educated, and what they d fr a living make fr ther great tpics f cnversatin. Indians enjy ging t the mvies and discussing them during the screening and later. Bllywd is ne f the biggest film industries in the wrld. Students shuld watch at least ne Hindi film while they are in India and have cnversatins abut what they have seen with lcals. Cricket is ne f the mst ppular sprts in India. Matches are shwn n televisin and bys and men can be seen playing in many neighbrhds. Persnal space and distance, when speaking t smene, r even when walking dwn the street r n a bus, are much smaller in India. Please dn t be alarmed if smene stands clse t yu while speaking r rubs up against yu n the street r the bus. Hwever, if this becmes inapprpriate in any way, dn t be afraid t speak up and make yur displeasure knwn. Indian sciety is cnservative, especially in terms f clthing. Wear clthing that des nt reveal t much skin. Just as Americans have steretypes abut Indians, Indians t have steretypes abut Americans. Fr instance, Indians feel that Americans are nt especially family-minded r religiusly-riented and are mre materially-driven. Since yu are learning abut the cmplexities f India, yu shuld als attempt t present a mre nuanced and cmplex picture f America and Americans t Indians. Educate yurself abut India befre leaving but als while yu are there. Read the lcal newspapers and watch the televisin news t get a sense f what peple are talking abut in the regin and cuntry. This will make yu mre educated and intelligent participants in cnversatins with lcals. Indians, like peple anywhere in the wrld, appreciate it and pen up if yu demnstrate a genuine interest in their lives and cncerns. Mst imprtantly, have fun, and see India fr what it is rather than what yu want it t be. 4

PACKING PACKING TIPS General Luggage Clthing shuld be cmfrtable and lightweight. Chse clthing that is easy t keep clean and can be hand-washed by lcal dhbis (washermen/wmen). Autmated washers and dryers are nt cmmn in India. The weather in India will be ht and humid, and rms may nt be air-cnditined. Yu must carry a sturdy umbrella with yu since the Mnsn rains will be arriving in Ga arund the same time yu travel there. Als, cnsider bringing sme warm-weather rain gear hat and jacket. Yu may als need this fr yur visit t Crg. Windw screens are uncmmn in India and msquites and ther biting bugs are nt. Bring a nn-aersl repellant t avid the discmfrt assciated with bug bites. Als bring sme hydrcrtisne (r whatever yu use t reduce the inflammatin assciated with bites). Yu will be bitten. The idea is t reduce the number and discmfrt assciated with this. Remember t pack yur malarial medicatin. Many items yu need can be purchased nce yu ve arrived at yur destinatin. Fr example, bring travel-sized tiletries t keep yur bags light, and purchase full-sized items nce yu ve arrived. D nt bring any items f sentimental value that yu culdn t bear t lse. Pack nly what yu can carry by yurself up 2-3 flights f stairs, r walk with fr relatively lng distances. A wheeled duffle bag r suitcase plus a generus tte r backpack fr weekend travel shuld suffice. Returning students recmmend that yur carry-n be a backpack rather than a handheld bag if yu plan t d any extra traveling. D nt pack valuables in yur checked luggage. Put address labels and cntact infrmatin inside and utside each piece f luggage. Pack medicatins in yur carry-n luggage. Pack all sharp bjects securely in yur checked baggage. Pack all liquids in plastic bags t avid leakage during travel. Place yur camera and laptp (if bringing ne) in yur carry-n. Put TSA-apprved lcks n all f yur luggage s that it can be pened withut the lck r bag being destryed. 9

Clthes Gifts Clthing shuld be cmfrtable and mstly lightweight. Indians tend t dress mre cnservatively than Americans; they usually wear shrts, camisles, tank tps and the like nly when exercising r ging t the beach. Bring ne dress utfit fr travel t theater, businesses, special events, etc. Bring easy care clthing items that are lightweight, drip dry, and wrinkleprf, such as knits, permanent press, and cttn clthes. Dark clrs are mre practical than light, as they d nt shw dirt as easily. Pack clthes yu can mix and match s as t give yur wardrbe as much variety withut having t pack as much. Only bring clthes yu can imagine wearing ften. Bring clthes that yu can layer fr varius temperatures. D nt bring clthes that immediately mark yu as freign avid items with bvius phrases in English, r ther symbls that will immediately mark yur utsider status. Rll clthes instead f flding them; yu will fit mre in the bag, and have fewer wrinkles upn arrival. Students ften find that there are peple they want t give gifts t at the end f their stay. Try t think f things that are unlikely t be available in India: items made in yur hme regin, calendars r bks with phts f America s utstanding features (wildlife, natinal parks, plantatins, cities, and s n), William & Mary paraphernalia, and the like. Fr mre tips, please cnsult the Summer Study Abrad Manual, as well as the Knw Befre Yu G sectin f this handbk. 10

AN IMPORTANT NOTE ON ELECTRICITY IN BENGALURU/GOA Electricity in India is 230 vlts, 50 cycle alternating current (AC). Fr cmparisn, in the United States it is 110 vlts, 60 cycle AC current. If yu plan n using yur wn 110-vlt appliances, yu will need a vltage cnverter, unless yur appliance is designed t als wrk with 230 vlts electricity (dual vltage). Fr example, mst laptp and camera chargers are designed t wrk bth at 110 and 230 vlts. Plugging in an appliance that is nt designed t run n 230 vlts electricity withut using a vltage cnverter will mst likely kill it and may cause fire! Regardless f vltage, if yur appliance has flat prngs, yu will need a plug adapter: Indian sckets are designed t accept rund prngs. D get ne befre yur leave! As a matter f fact, Indian plugs can be f tw different types; Type C and Type D. The Type C mst clsely resembles Eurpean-style plugs while the Type D plug represents the ld British-style plugs. Regardless f plug type, the utlets all prduce 230 vlts! Type C Plug 11 Type D Plug

TRAVELING TO BENGALURU/GOA NOTE: Yu are respnsible fr yur wn travel arrangements t and frm India. AIRPORT PICK-UP Please schedule yur travel s that yu arrive in Bengaluru (Bangalre when lking up flights n many websites) n May 21. The prgram fficially ends June 24 th in Ga (i.e. yu will need t leave by that date r make arrangements fr yur wn husing fr that night and beynd). Yur bags will be x-rayed and yu will be searched. Withut yur dmestic ticket in hand fr yur flight frm Mumbai t Bengaluru in hand, r itinerary which includes yur dmestic Indian flight and yur name clearly printed n it, yu will nt be permitted n the bus and will be frced t take a taxi. It is very imprtant that yu have yur flight itinerary r barding pass when flying frm Mumbai t Bengaluru. In additin, if yu have a lng layver in Mumbai fr yur flight t Bengaluru, yu may nt enter the airprt until 2 t 3 hurs prir t yur departure. The internatinal airprt des have a waiting rm, but it is nt free and yu will need lcal currency t enter. Other cmmn layvers include Dha, Abu Dhabi, and Lndn Heathrw. They recmmend carrying sme cash and yur credit r debit card. Please see budget sectin fr mre infrmatin. 25

TIPS FROM A PAST STUDENT Mney: Did yu have a budget, ways t get cash and apprximately hw much did yu spend? I persnally had a budget that I had set befre departure, which I stayed well under. Things in India are nt particularly expensive, and mst things yu wuld need are prvided fr yu. I never felt like I didn t have enugh mney (within the cnfines f my budget) t d r buy what I wanted. I ended up spending under $350, and that included multiple dinners and purchases. There is an ATM abut a seven minute walk frm the ICG, and there are als a few in Panjim. During the excursin, access t an ATM is mre limited, but there are n expenses, really, befre Bangalre, where yu are easily able t find an ATM. Hw did yu d laundry? At the ICG, I did laundry in my shwer. I bught liquid Tide detergent packs (yu can find them in the travel-size aisle at Target) with me, and was easily able t wash my clthes. The ICG prvided each rm with a bucket, which yu wuld fill with the faucet in the shwer and then hand wash yur clthes. Once washed, I wuld hang mst f my clthes utside t dry (but nt n the railing r the staff will charge yu). There was a clthesline in the shwer, but there wasn t enugh air circulatin in there fr my clthes t dry well. If it lked like it was ging t rain r there wasn t enugh rm n the prch fr all my laundry, I wuld place sme f my clthes n the furniture under the strng ceiling fans. Once students leave fr the excursin, ding laundry becmes much mre difficult. Yu can, in thery, hand-wash yur clthes n the rad, t, but the stps are hardly lng enugh t wash and dry a full lad f laundry. In Bangalre, I paid the htel t d my laundry, which ended up being a little pricey but ttally wrth it. What was the weather like? What types f clthing did yu need? It was pretty ht the entire time we were there. Wmen must wear clthes that cver their knees and their shulders (at least), s I wre a lt f lng skirts and t- shirts. I als wre a lt f scarves. Make sure the clthing yu bring is cmfrtable, dries easily, packs easily, and can be wrn a few times withut washing (there is little time t wash and dry clthes n the excursin). Als, be sure t pack a gd rain jacket and an umbrella the last week f ur trip was the start f mnsn seasn. In terms f shes, bring sandals that yu wuld feel cmfrtable walking lng distances in like Birkenstcks, Tevas, r Chacs. I didn t bring these and I wish that I had. I brught an ld pair f running shes that I ended up thrwing ut after we left Hampi. 26

Describe yur everyday life during the prgram r typical schedule during the week. We wuld wake up, get dressed, and have breakfast by 9:30. We wuld have class until 11, have a break fr tea, and then have class until 12:30 r 1. After that, we wuld have lunch. Then, if there was an excursin planned we wuld depart fr thattherwise we wuld take a bus dwntwn. We wuld return fr dinner n later than 7 r 8, then d hmewrk, read, watch TV, r play cards until we went t bed. Sme nights we went and explred utdr markets r lcal bars. Describe any pprtunities yu had t meet lcals r immerse yurself in culture utside f prgram activities. All f ur prfessrs were lcals s we had the pprtunity t ask them a lt f questins abut their experiences and cultural nuances we didn t understand. We als talked t the staff f the ICG a lt. Whenever we wuld g n an excursin, we wuld meet a guide wh wuld tell us a lt abut the culture specific t that sectin f twn r cuntry. Even just walking arund dwntwn we were able t grasp a lt. We had a lt f pprtunities t absrb culture and I was very thankful fr that. What else is helpful fr smene t knw if they g n this prgram? G with an pen mind and an pen heart. India has s much t ffer and yu can learn s much frm the peple and experiences that yu will encunter. 27
