COUNCIL OF NORTHERN CALIFORNIA PHILATELIC SOCIETIES NOVAPEX MEETING MINUTES The 1st Qtr. Meeting of the Council was called to order by President Vesma Grinfelds at 1:00 pm, March 4, 2006, at NOVAPEX in Redding, CA. Nine clubs of the Council were represented, and Mr. Wallace Craig of the Southern California Collectors Club was a guest. Minutes of the prior meeting were approved as printed in the Council Courier and distributed at the meeting. Due to the absence of the Treasurer, there was no financial report. The President requested that a list of the clubs, with names, addresses and e-mails of the officers be sent to her. Discussion on the Courier resulted in the decision we need an issue before WESTPEX and we should try to have more information about happenings at the clubs included. Discussion was held on ways to gather and consolidate such information, resulting in the formation of a Communications Committee to do this, and the appointment as Henry Washauer as chairman. All clubs were reminded that they can put literature, flyers or pamphlets about their club on the Council's table at WESTPEX. A representative from a Council club must be at the table at all hours during the show. Volunteers are needed. David McNamee reported that the Team Challenge committee is gearing up for another exhibit, to be held next year, perhaps at NOVAPEX or COALPEX. The meeting adjourned at 1:40 pm. Respectfully submitted, Charles Kasdorf Secretary HANK WASHAUER TO HEAD CNCPS COMMUNICATIONS COMMITTEE Hank Washauer of the Sequoia Stamp Club has volunteered to be our Communications Committee Chairman. Hank s role will be to gather information about club activities and communicate this to our newsletter editor and to our CNCPS Webmaster and also create articles and informational emails. Hank is in the process of requesting copies of publications from the member clubs, and you may hear from him. You can contract Hank at: hankwashauer@yahoo.com Hank Washauer P.O. FEATURED CLUB The Redwood Empire Collectors Club By Norris (Bob) Dyer The Redwood Empire Collectors Club held its first meeting in January, 1991, and has met on a regular basis since. Meetings are held on the third Wednesday of every month, except for a summer barbecue, a Christmas event, and our WINEPEX show held each October. Some members have gone on to use these skills to exhibit in national APS shows, some of them winning Golds, Platinums and single frame Grands. More advanced exhibitors are always helping new single frame aficionados create or improve their exhibits, and novice exhibitors have fared quite well at previous shows. This year WINEPEX is on October 6-8. If you are interested in exhibiting, please contact me. There are currently 15-20 active members, all of whom could be termed ardent philatelists. Although we meet in Petaluma, our members come from all over the Bay Area. Meetings normally include dinner, a short business meeting, and a speaker. Since 1991 we have had 120 philatelists give presentations at these meetings everything from District of Columbia Early Postmarks to the First Issue of Austria. We prefer this approach to perusing circuit books or holding club auctions. Bruce Blaikie Speaks on the 2 Columbian Issue Redwood Empire Club Members at the March Meeting In March, for example, Bruce Blaikie gave a fascinating PowerPoint presentation, 2 CENT COLUMBIAN, PRO- DUCTION AND VARIETIES. Blaikie is a recognized expert on this issue, and has discovered a number of varieties from his holdings of over 100,000 copies! In 1994 we held our first annual RECC show in Marin County. Our claim to philatelic fame is that we only accept single frame exhibits for our shows. In the last few years, we have called this show WINEPEX, and it has been held in San Rafael. Because we have always encouraged exhibits from members, a number of them have honed their single frame skills. 2 Columbian from Bruce s PowerPoint Presentation We are always looking for new members and consider ourselves an open, friendly club. Currently we meet at De Schmire Restaurant, 304 Bodega Avenue, Petaluma, the third Wednesday of the month at 6:00 P.M. If you would like to give a presentation, or simply attend as a guest, call Bob Dyer at (707) 763-2934 or email me at: nrdyer@comcast.net Page 4
