It's hard to believe that we're already in March. In January, I flew to Kansas City for the national board meeting. It appears that the upcoming show in Des Moines is shaping up to be a big one. I know the venue really looks good. Our installation dinner at Mill Creek Cattle Company turned out really nice. We all had a good meal and good conversation. Mill Creek is a neat old time restaurant and saloon, and really makes a nice gathering place. You can find a few of us there on Tuesdays for the half price sandwiches. The last two weekends were busy as well, with the Big 3 Swap Meet in San Diego, and last weekend at Pomona. We had a good time at both shows until the rains came. Fortunately, we got done what we needed to do, which was to promote our society and chapter. And we had fun as well, which was the main objective. Our yearly show in Perris will be here before we know it. We need help making trophies, so please check the calendar and come out for a few hours and give us a hand. Also, please start getting your trucks ready for the show. Hopefully, we can get over 150 trucks in attendance this year. Congratulations to Terry Klenske on his article in "Wheels of Time" and for being awarded the Harris Saunders Sr. Award, which is the organization's most prestigious award. Terry and his wife, Elle, have been dedicated ATHS members for decades. Thank you, Terry and Elle, for all you've done for the society. Hope to see you at the next event. Happy truckin' The Old Iron Express Newsletter is published every two months by the Southern California Chapter of the American Truck Historical Society, a non profit organization. P.O. PAST EVENTS February 18 Mentone, CA Annual New Year and Welcome dinner We had our New Year and Welcome dinner at the Mill Creek Cattle Company, in Mentone. About 30 people attended. It was a great chance to socialize with past, present, and new members. Feb 24, 25 & 26 San Diego Big 3 Swap Meet Qualcom (old Jack Murphy) Stadium Mark & Diane Christensen, and Dennis & Lisa Martinez held down the fort in our new spaces at the swap meet, near the trolley station. Dennis brought his Mack and travel trailer; Mark brought the Diamond T. Ken Lund brought his 71 Riviera, and parked it with the San Diego Buick and Riviera club. All had a good time and look forward to doing it again next year. March 5 - Pomona Swap Meet Special ATHS-So Cal Chapter Display We were invited to display some of our vehicles in the Car Corral area, and had free entry to the Pomona Swap Meet on Sunday March 5. This is a rare opportunity that only comes up about every 5 years. We had 8 vehicles of all sizes on display. We arrived at 5:30 am, and the pending rain waited until about 1pm to dampen the spirts, which was about when many of the participants start leaving. Thank you to Dennis Martinez with his Mack, Bruce & Chris Caballero with their International flatbed, Mark Christensen with his Diamond T, Tom Taylor with his 37 Ford flatbed with 55-56-57 Chevy dragster, Ken Lund with his GMC, Robert & Michael ( grasshopper ) Elledge with an International pickup, Jon and Cindy Elledge with their Kenworth, and Richard Snedeker with his Ford F-900. It was a great way to promote our club and the truck show.

2017 EVENTS IMPORTANT DATE CHANGE Wednesday March 22 nd - Trophy Day - Orange County Richard Barrett has agreed again to host our annual Trophy Day work party at his shop in Orange. However, due to another commitment for the previously scheduled date, we need to change to a mid-week date. I know work and party don t usually go together, but we do it!! Here s a chance to show your creativity and help us make our signature trophies for the May truck show. We use donated parts (we can always use more!) and add them to the bases we stain and finish that day. Lunch is provided. While no additional changes are anticipated, call Ken @ 909-790-7707 or Richard @ 714-262-5175 to confirm time/date and get directions. As in the past this has been a rain or shine event. Location: 10571 Meads Ave, Orange. Time: Plan to arrive about 10am! NOTE: We can always use parts for trophy tops. Our source for many years is no longer available. Bring a part to our breakfast meetings, or to any of our events. Or give one of the board members a call. If you bring on trophy day, it needs to be clean and ready to paint (unless it is suitable for the Best Display of Rust!!) We appreciate the help. SoCal Chapter in Jan/Feb Wheels of Time Several of our members and vehicles received coverage in the Jan/Feb Wheels of Time. First, congratulations to Terry Klenske for receiving the Harry Sanders Sr. Award, as seen in the article on page 67. It was presented to him at the 2016 National Convention in Salem, OR. Terry, and his 1954 Ford C-600 were also featured in an article on pages 36-43. Great to learn about Terry s start in trucking and his history with Dalton Trucking. Bill Leuer s FWD has a brief cameo appearance on page 29, in an article about the history of American 4X4 trucks, titled Four wheelin! Even Art Dodge s yard art, Mack B model front clip (with a trailer hitch to facilitate moving around the yard) was on page 7 in the Reader Mail section. Keep an eye out for this guy at the next Pomona Swap Meet. It s a pull wagon, but doesn't haul much. Looks good.
