Luckily, we live in an area where there is still plenty of great riding cooler temperatures make for even better riding. The big event of the coming month is All Chapters East. We are hoping to get a big group to ride out to Carlisle with us after the gathering in September to support Bob and Diana Long as they participate in the District Couple of the Year selection process. We hope some of you have signed up for the banquet that night as it is sure to be a good time. We have several other day rides planned so be sure to check out the website and get signed up for what you can fit into your schedule. September is also the time we start looking ahead to next year and choosing the team to lead this chapter for the next few years. Be sure to contact us or Rob & Pat Simmons if you would like to be involved in the team leadership for Chapter B. We are blessed to have so many members that are willing to give their time and talent to keep this chapter active. Many hands make light work so if there is something particular you would like to help with, be sure to let us know. By all these lovely tokens, September days are here. With Summer s best of weather, and Autumn s best of cheer -Helen Hunt Jackson Friends for Fun, Safety, and Knowledge

FROM JIM BURR MEMBERSHIP ENHANCEMENT Fall is right around the corner, and I am wondering where the summer has gone. We will be doing the Solanco Fair on September 16-18 th Wednesday-Friday. This is a great way to introduce us to fellow Gold Wingers, promote our chapter, and meet new friends along the way. The packets are ready to hand out to anyone interested in our organization. What a great way to talk to people who just come up and ask us about our machines. I am still looking for more volunteers to give only 3 hours of your day. Please let me know if you are willing to help. I do appreciate everyone who has volunteered thus far. 9 am- 12 pm 12 pm- 3 pm 3 pm- 6 pm 6 pm- 9pm We have a 10x20 outside booth and will be able to have our Goldwing s underneath a large canopy. We also will have electric if needed. For our members who do not regularly attend our chapter gatherings, please come out and see us. We would be glad to meet you and answer any questions you may have. Thanks to everyone I contacted for renewing your membership. It is appreciated. Upcoming events: October 3 rd we will be at the Breneman s for Family Fall Fun Day. Bring the family, especially the kids and grandkids for a fun day on the farm. Learn about what goes on at a real working farm. We will have other exciting things planned. Watch for the flyer. 2 nd Annual Game day is coming. For those who did not attend last year, 24 chapter members gathered for an afternoon of fun and games including pool, indoor shuffle board, card games and of course food. Once the date is set, watch for the flyer. We want to have a Mini Golf challenge with Chapter K. We are waiting for their response. If it happens, and I hope it does, we will meet at Adventure Sports in Hershey. Look for the flyer on the web site and email from me if it happens. Finally please begin thinking of what we as a chapter can do next year to enhance our experience as a chapter. That s it for now. Until we meet again Be safe Jim Burr PA Chapter B Membership Enhancement Coordinator

FROM JIM BURR RIDER EDUCATOR September is here and with it come shorter days and cooler weather. Great weather for a fall ride to anywhere you want to go. Pennsylvania has some nice routes and I hope you all get to enjoy some of them this fall. I want to talk about helmet safety this month. I received an article from Eric Clavier and I thought I would share some of it with you. I have paraphrased it to try to focus on the points of the article I thought were important. Original Article comes from NHTSA. Safety In 2012 Motorcyclists accounted for 15% of all traffic fatalities. Motorcycles made up only 3 % of all registered vehicles in the United States miles traveled. and less than 1% of vehicle Societal costs saved by the use of motorcycle helmets in 2011 were 3.4B dollars. (Loss of life, loss of productivity, Insurance payouts, hospital cost, Emergency responder cost and rehabilitation costs etc.) Additional societal cost that could have been saved if every rider in a crash had worn a helmet was 1.5 B dollars. 1,699 lives saved by wearing a motorcycle helmet What does this tell us- In 2012 Facts 4,957 motorcyclists were killed on the Nation s roadways. 33% increase in motorcyclist s fatalities from 2003 to 2012. 93,000 motorcyclists were injured. This is an increase of 12K from 2011. There were 10 times as many unhelmeted motorcyclist fatalities in States without universal helmet laws (1,858) as in states with universal helmet laws (178) Resident population was near equivalent. In 2012 there were 19 states with helmet laws. Average use rate of DOT certified motorcyclist helmets was 89% in states with helmet laws compared to 49% in states without the helmet law. In Baltimore MD 50% of motorcyclist admitted to a trauma center were wearing substandard helmets. (Sometimes called a novelty helmet) received a head injury. Compared to 23% who were wearing a DOT certified helmet. More than half of the motorcyclist killed across the United States in 2012 were 40 or older. As a motorcyclist, your safety during a crash is your decision. Take a look at the below statement. Passenger car crashworthiness as required by law Air Bags Seat Belts Structural integrity

RIDER ED CONTINUED Motorcycle crashworthiness equipment as required by law DOT certified helmet Your decision Completed facial helmet Your decision Protective gear Your decision What Can You Do Motorcycle Operators should wear a certified helmet and wear the protective gear. Take a safety-riding course to gain the knowledge, skills, and behavior to be proficient. Take a refresher course to continue to make safety a lifelong priority. Passengers should wear DOT certified helmet and the proper protective gear. Encourage your operator to do the same. If you are not licensed, do not operate a motorcycle. Go to www.odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/ to sign up for motorcycle helmet recall email alerts. Follow the directions. Be Safe, Ride Safe Jim Burr, Rider Educator If anyone has Wing World magazines dated 2012 to present I could really use them. Please email me and we can work something out to get them in my hands.

FROM JIM DUFF-YOUR 2015 RIDE COORDINATOR Following is some updated information regarding the September 5th ride to John Oberholzer s son s BMW motorcycle museum in Clarksville, MD. The museum is free and there will be a light lunch provided. As I am writing this article there are two couples and three solo riders signed up for this ride. The ride will leave Musser s parking lot near the Buck (35 Friendly Dr, Quarryville) at 8:30 am. The ride is about two and a half hours each way. If you plan to go, please sign up on the website or call John (717-768-8708) or me (717-817-8850) by Thursday evening so John can let his son know on Friday how many to plan for on Saturday. PIONEER TUNNEL COAL MINE & STEAM TRAIN TOUR On Saturday, August 15th, six couples and three solo riders enjoyed a trip to the Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine and Steam Train in Ashland, PA. The ride was to be led by me but I realized within a quarter mile from home that my rear tire was half flat. TCLOCS on Friday night would have caused me to change the flat for the spare then. Fortunately, John Oberholser had ridden the pre-ride with me earlier in the week and was able lead the group to Ashland. Becky and I caught up with the group in Ashland. Thanks again to John for stepping up and leading the first half of the day. The Coal Mine Tour was very informative and entertaining. The Steam Train Ride was short and jerky. Following the tours, I led the group over the mountains on PA 125 for some twisty roads and a stop at Ravine. From there part of the group split off and headed home while four couples rode on through E-town to Gigi s in Bainbridge. As always, we had great food and ice cream at Gigi s. Eric tried to suck his eyeballs back into his head with a super thick milkshake and following a comment he made to Linda he got the look. See pictures on the next page. RIDE SAFE JIM DUFF
