Malta 3 hours from Gatwick Valletta Mellieha Bay, Sliema, Qawra, St Julian s Malta s climate is typically Mediterranean. In summer, temperatures start at 30 C and can peak at 40 C in August. Winters here are mild, with the occasional chilly period brought about by winds from Europe. When it comes to rain, three quarters falls between October and March. 1. Palace Of The Grand Masters Built in 1571, the Palace of the Grand Masters is one of Valletta s earliest buildings. The palace was originally created as lodgings for the ruler of Malta but, today, it s the seat of the Maltese parliament and part of a World Heritage Site. While you re here, wander through gilded corridors, discover suits of armour in the armoury, and spot wall-sized weavings in the tapestry room. 2. National Museum Of Fine Arts Housed in a 16th-century Baroque palace, Valletta s National Museum Of Fine Arts is an Aladdin s cave for Western European art. You ll find more than a dozen rooms dedicated to paintings from the 14th to the 17th centuries, representing Venetian, Dutch and Maltese schools. One of the highlights is a painting of Valletta s Grand Harbour, painted by Turner. 3. Mdina Set on one of Malta s highest points, this Medieval walled city is a dead-ringer for Camelot. The buildings are made from limestone, gargoyle-shaped knockers hang from front doors, and the narrow streets are only an arrow s flight long. Mdina hasn t changed much since the Knights of St John roamed the streets. It s still illuminated by lamplight at night and there are no cars, so it s virtually silent. 4. Rabat Founded in the Middle Ages, Rabat is now a major Maltese town. Its biggest claim to fame is its association with St Paul the Apostle. He s said to have lived here after he was shipwrecked in 60 AD. The town is also full of calling cards from Malta s Roman occupation. You can wander around the remains of an ancient villa and head underground to the catacombs. 5. Marsaxlokk This fishing village is the most photographed in Malta, and it s easy to see why. The harbour here is home to more than 250 fishing boats, which are all painted in tutti-frutti colours. Many of the vessels have an eye of osiris logo on the front, too, which is a good luck charm that dates back to Phoenician times. The harbour is lined with seafood restaurants, where the fish go straight from net to plate. Holidays to Malta serve up ancient history, Renaissance art and a great gastro scene no wonder the island is known as the land of honey. Malta is one of the smallest countries in the world, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to tourism. It s got a spectacular coastline, great dive sites, and a capital city that s like one giant museum. Valletta was built by the Knights Hospitallier in the 16th century and is bumper-to-bumper with ancient palaces, Baroque churches and knights
hostels. In fact, Malta s entire history is as layered as a trifle. The temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra on the south coast are cast-offs from prehistoric times. Elsewhere on the island, you can see the legacies left behind by the eight empires that have ruled Malta. You can also retrace the footsteps of knights in Mdina and go in search of Napoleon s ghost in Valletta. Of course, there s more to Malta than its timeline. Island life revolves around having a good time. Throughout the summer, festivals take place at a different village each weekend. The season of celebration kicks off in style with the International Fireworks Festival at the start of May. Then there s Paceville in St Julian s to consider. The nightlife capital of Malta gives Ibiza a run for its record-spinning money. Just plunge into the crisp, clear waters for an instant cool-off and to wallow in the sun-drenched vistas all around. For a proper day by the water, take a bus to Mellieha Bay, with its smooth sandy beach, or jump into the fun and frolics at Bugibba s lido. And when you tire of lounging around, hop on a bus to Valletta or take the kids on a boat trip to the hauntingly beautiful Blue Grotto caves. For nighttime fun, you re totally sorted. Take a table at a waterfront restaurant and then hotfoot it to Bugibba s casino, cinema or bingo hall. Then, if the night still feels young, live it up at the resort s lively music bars til first light creeps over the bay.
