The group made some decisions regarding how to inform the membership of changes in the ride schedule. If a ride is questionable based on weather, a message will be placed on the phone line advising that people should check back and that a decision will be made and a message will be available by 6am the day of the ride. Do you know your riding temperature? Riding Safe Have you ever wondered what the temperature of your ride really is? As soon as you start moving through the air on a motorcycle, the temperature you experience and what you see on a thermometer are different. Once you hit 30 mph, the temperature you re experiencing is a full 12 degrees less than what you see on the bank clock. After 30 mph, your riding temperature continues to decrease 2 degrees for every 10 mph. So, by the time you reach 70 mph, your riding temperature is a full 20 degrees less than what you ll see on the thermometer. Let s say you step outside and see that it s a mild and beautiful morning at 50 degrees. While your clothing may keep you warm enough while standing in that 50 degrees, if you start riding the open road and approach 70 mph, it will feel like 30 degrees to you. Safely riding a motorcycle includes managing and preparing for your riding temperature, the one you ll really experience on the open road. The best way to do this is to dress in and carry layers of clothing on the motorcycle, including gloves. Having a jacket, whether leather or synthetic, is your first need. Along with it, you ll want at least one and perhaps two other items of long-sleeve upper body accessory wear. You ll want these layers to keep you warm when it s cold and then take layers off as it starts to warm. You ll find the same to be true of gloves. Thick, over-the-wrist gloves will be handy for early morning and late evening riding. But during the day, a lighter pair that just comes up to the wrist bone will be fine. What would be wrong, you might wonder, with forgoing layers and just committing to wearing a thick jacket and gloves throughout the day of riding? This could be dangerous for two reasons. For one, you might become too warm during the day and get woozy while riding. Second, wearing a thick, nonlayered jacket when it s 30 degrees will certainly keep you warm but could lead to sweating inside the jacket later on. When you stop for gas or a break, you ll no longer be acclimated for the weather and probably be cold when you start riding again if any sweat has dried and your clothing is a little wet. Continued on page 6

Continued from page 5 Overall, having 2-3 options for your upper body, 2 pairs of gloves, and 1 set of chaps or similar cover for your legs will help you properly prepare for riding. Since your riding temperature and the ambient temperature differ as your riding speed increases and the temperature throughout the day will change, these layers will make the difference in your enjoyment and keep you safely riding instead of being preoccupied by discomfort. Remembering your riding temperature is easy: 12 degrees less at 30 mph, 2 degrees for every 10 mph thereafter. Plan ahead to enjoy the ride. From the Editor Boy summer is going to be over before we know it and we really haven t had much good summer weather. Hopefully we will have a few weeks before the season is over. We still have a number of rides planned for this riding season. Skip and I did a pre-ride to Red Rooster in Bethel, Maine that will be taking place on Saturday the 17th meeting at LHD at 8:30 leaving at 9:00. PLEASE make sure to arrive with a full tank of gas there aren t many gas stations along the way and the first stop is a rest area not a gas station. After having lunch at the Red Rooster we will be going to a gas station before heading back. Chairperson: Carl Harris Ride Committee Updates The Ride Committee met on July 29th at Dave Broughton's house. Originally hoping for a ice cream ride, but due to torrential down pours we ended up inside. Thanks Dave to the great hospitality. We discussed our many ways of communicating with the Chapter Members and the effectiveness of our website, Facebook and the information line and decided that we would maintain each as we have not heard any complaints from the membership. Other ways of getting our message out to the membership will be looked at in the future. We also discussed all of the rides the Chapter has had to date and felt that all were very successful with only a few rides that had to be cancelled due to bad weather. We will try to reschedule those rides before we get to cold! We talked about how we can improve The Ride to the Sky for 2014. For our members working the event and the riders too. More on that later. We also found that our Mid Week Rides have been very popular with great attendance and great destinations. I think the Chapter will see more of these next year. All in all, as we head into September and cooler temperatures, I think we have had a great riding season with some great rides to some great destinations. Our committee members and Road Captains are committed to give the best back to the Chapter. We have found that our weather here in New England has not been the best this year and has tested our means of notifying the membership in a timely manner. So make sure you check into Facebook and call the information line before each ride to confirm that they are actually taking place. No one wants to get wet if they don't have to! Look for the rescheduled date for the Smugglers Notch Ride. We should have that out soon. Thank you for all the support and participation. Carl D. Harris

Meeting New Friends A group of five hog members from Nebraska came to our area a few years ago in July hoping to have someone show them the lakes region and the seacoast. Eight members from Winnipesaukee Hog got to meet some pretty amazing people and some of us still stay in touch with each other. I would recommend doing this to anyone interest in meeting new people. We had a really good time even in the rain. Another GREAT RIDE CARL! 30 people attended this ride!

Portland - we went to a few different lighthouses on this ride. Flash from the past! Pictures provided by Judi Dunlap Boy Fran will have to tell you where this was taken It has been awhile since we went here on a chapter ride. Enjoying the 2012 Harvest Supper ON THE MEND A little update for those of you who were not able to attend the August meeting. Rick was in an accident Saturday August 10th. He is home, but will be pretty sore for a while. Wishing you a speedy recovery Rick! Road Trips Anyone interested in sharing a ride you have been on or a trip that others might be interested doing? Many of our chapter members often look for new destinations for a day trip or overnight. If you are willing to share please send the information to editor.hog@hotmail.com
