Navy Pier The Navy Pier is a 3,300 foot long pier on the Chicago shoreline of Lake Michigan. The pier was built in 1916 and was intended to serve as a mixed-purpose piece of public infrastructure. It s primary purpose was as a cargo facility for lake freighters and warehouses, as well as docking space for passenger excursions. The Navy Pier was used during World War I primarily for housing Navy personnel. In World War II, the pier was closed to the public and converted to a Navy training center for up to 10,000 service personnel. Following the wars, the pier went to the University of Illinois to serve returning veterans, but the space was underutilized. Most recently, the Pier began its fourth life as an area for public gathering. Major renovations began in the 1990 s and included plans for restaurants, shops, a ballroom, a concert stage and exhibition hall, and has expanded to include a Ferris wheel, an IMAX theatre, the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre, Amazing Chicago s Funhouse Maze, the Chicago Children s Museum, and the Smith Museum of Stained Glass Windows. The Pier and its grounds encompass more than 50 acres of parks, gardens, shops, restaurants, exhibition and meeting space, and all kinds of entertainment!
