REVIEW SCIENTIFIC METHOD Parachutes

Parachute Project This is a project grade and review of the scientific method for semester exam Wednesday 19th. Make sure to read ALL directions!!!! Competing with class for longest average time in air 1 st up to a 100A 2 nd up to a 95A 3 rd up to a 90A Everyone else up to an 85B To receive full credit Write in complete sentences Include measurements Draw and label drawing Neat Need to study for semester exam Wednesday 19 th go through website and use old PowerPoints On website take practice Quizizz posted during week take notes on missed questions

Wednesday 12 th Friday 14 th Wednesday 12 th Materials Needed Everyone needs an ipad Personal Headphones OR headphone splitters Parachute Packet Instructions Individual Complete the Research Section of the Parachute Packet See next slide Hand teacher packet when leaving class Thursday 13 th Materials Needed Parachute Packet Ziploc with parachute supplies (after show teacher group design) Instructions Group needs to decide on a design for their parachute (10minutes) Must show teacher before receiving supplies Friday 14 th Materials Needed Parachute Packet Supplies for communication backboard Instructions Finish parachute Layout the communication portion of the scientific method Once finish communication review for semester exam Hand teacher packet when leaving class and communication backboard

Scientific Method - Building a Parachute - Wednesday Step 1 Problem: What parachute design will keep a sky diver in the air the longest? Step 2 Research: Links for questions on the website Answer the questions on your worksheet in complete sentences 1. Source 1 1. Who first thought of the idea of a parachute? 2. Summarize Garnerin and his involvement with parachutes 2. Source 2 Watch video until 7 minutes 1. The quote necessity is the mother of invention How does this apply to the invention of parachutes? 2. How did Stephen Banage move through the scientific method when creating his parachute design? 3. How did the army modify (alter) Banage s parachute patent? 3. Source 3 1. What is the difference between round and circle parachutes? 2. When choosing the size and design of a parachute what must be taken into consideration? 4. Source 4 1. How is NASA using parachutes for things other than people? 2. What methods are NASA using to test parachutes for interplanetary missions? Research parachutes shapes Draw a sketch of the parachute you think your group should make (groups will have to decide on a final design)

Wednesday Clean Up Stack Ipads and head phones facing down in middle of desk Headphone adapters need to be given teacher before leaving class so she can count and make sure all present Hand Parachute packet to teacher when leaving the room.

Thursday - Each group needs Parachute Packet Ziploc back with Garbage bag cut out White sheet for group names Floss (group leader gets from teacher) Everyone is filling out their own worksheet must be complete problem, research, hypothesis, experimental steps

Thursday and Friday Step 3 Write your hypothesis If a parachute is, then it will stay in the air the longest. Step 4 Experimental Design Before Creating the Parachute make sure your group has a plan for the parachute. Redraw your group s parachute design on the handout and label the measures of the parachute and the strings in the drawing Each group will get the same size garbage bag to cut their parachute but can use different amounts of floss (within reason) Write steps to making parachute step by step Pawn chess piece weights 1.5 grams Include measurements of parachutes (centimeters) Include Length of strings (centimeters)

Clean Up Thursday Group leaders Throw away trash, put up supply bins, and put up notebooks Fold parachute and pawn in Ziploc bag Make sure label with your groups name place in side counter in your periods section (where you put the gummy bears) Hand teacher worksheet when leaving class Must complete packet Steps 1-4, parachute, and communication portion on Friday

Friday Make sure you completed Steps 1-4 in your packet Finish parachute design Complete Communication portion Review for semester exam with ipads or board game / head bands

Step 7 Communication Create the backboard for you parachute project Fold the paper into three sections by taking the paper ends and touching them together. Then divide up the jobs below among your group members Only need to complete text in red. Write on computer paper and glue to construction paper then to backboard. Anything that is bolded needs to be a title heading on the backboard. Problem (write the question) Hypotheses (write your groups hypothesis) Independent Variable Dependent Variable 3 Constants (write both variables and 3 constants) Experimental Steps (write the steps) Experimental Design (Picture of parachute and measurements labelled) Data collection and Analysis Chart (write the data chart and will fill in later) Double Bar Graph of Parachute times Conclusion (bullet points)

Before Dropping the parachutes on Monday 10 minutes to 1. Make any changes. 2. Finish writing the experimental section include measurement of pawn (1.5 grams), measurement of parachute, and strings 3. Write design of your parachute in chart on back of worksheet. Example: Circle parachute with 16 cm diameter and 12 cm strings spaced 8 cm apart. Example: Square parachute and all sides 10 cm. The 14 cm strings are tied at each corner.

Parachute Drop Each team will drop their parachute twice and will be timed for each. Only 1 person from each group is allowed on the stairs to drop their parachute. Everyone else needs to stand to side and write down the times as I call them out. Groups Design Description Time Monday Tuesday Wednesday Front Table Wednesday Back Table Thursday Friday
